Into Mischief ‘Philly’ Shows ‘Em ‘Hoos’ Boss in Golden Rod

Hoosier Philly (Into Mischief) ran to her billing and kept her perfect record in tact Saturday, scoring her third straight win at Churchill Downs in the GII Golden Rod S.

A debut winner going 5 1/2urlongs at this oval Sept. 25, the $510,000 KEESEP acquisition showed two turns was no problem, charging home to a 7 1/2-length victory in a sloppy renewal of the 1 1/16-mile Rags to Riches S. Oct. 30. She prepped for this with a series of bullet drills and was duly made the 2-5 favorite.

Stumbling a bit at the break, Hoosier Philly quickly jumped into the bridle and kept tabs from fourth, running off the fence as 13-1 shot T Max (Connect) clocked a :24.29 first quarter. Charging up to take control as the half-mile went in :47.79 with Pure Paline (Curlin) hot on her tail, the gray bounded clear at the top of the lane and was on cruise control from there, coasting home to an effortless five-length score. She earned 10 points towards a spot in the GI Kentucky Oaks starting gate. Knockyoursocksoff (Kitten's Joy) was best of the rest in second with Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief) in third and Pure Pauline filling out the superfecta.

“I've said multiple times, and I hope it doesn't come across as arrogant, I've never seen any horse like her,” said Tom Amoss, who trained 2019 Oaks winner Serengeti Empress (Alternation). “I've been training since 1987 and she's different than anything I've ever had come in my barn. The instructions to [rider] Edgar [Morales] were pretty simple, he was on the best horse and ride her with confidence.”

He continued, “Now, she'll get a break by design and will bring her back as a 3-year-old. She's a filly but I have entertained the thought of putting her on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.”

“She's unbelievable,” Morales said. “I had so much horse the entire race. I got behind horses a little bit going into the first turn but kept her outside and she was moving so easily. It's so much fun to ride her and so easy, too. She knows exactly what to do and when to do it.”

Pedigree Notes:

Hoosier Philly is graded winner number 57 for the all-conquering Into Mischief and one of 116 black-type winners for the Spendthrift kingpin. She is the 33rd graded scorer out of a daughter of Tapit, who was represented by his 30th Grade I winner as a sire Friday at Churchill in GI Clark H. victor Proxy. Tapella is a daughter of unbeaten stakes winner Princess Arabella (Any Given Saturday), who is also responsible for MGSP Ulele (Candy Ride {Arg}). Cheyenne Stables purchased Tapella for $750,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale and she won two of eight starts. Hoosier Philly is her first foal and she has since produced a yearling filly by Mastery and weanling colt by Justify. She was bred back to Munnings for 2023.

Red Carpet Ready a First Dirt SW for Oscar Performance in Fern Creek

The betting public had some difficulty knowing exactly what to do with Red Carpet Ready in Saturday's $200,000 Fern Creek S. at Churchill Downs. The $180,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate opened her account at first asking by 10 going six furlongs on the Stars of Tomorrow I program here Oct. 30, but it came over a heavily rain-affected track and was only modestly graded.

The dark bay filly was accordingly no better than 7-1 off a morning line that was half that number and jumped alertly to stalk the pace outside of 4-1 Twirled, herself an eight-length maiden winner at Keeneland Oct. 22. Asked to improve when The Great Maybe (Upstart) rolled up to her outside with about 2 1/2 furlongs to travel, Red Carpet Ready counterpunched between rivals, engaged the pacesetter in upper stretch, put her away for good at the eighth pole and came away to a fairly easy victory. Twirled just held for second over heavily favored Myrtlewood S. winner Key of Life, who overraced down the backstretch and just could not bridge the deficit late.

Red Carpet Ready, her sire's most expensive first-crop yearling (34 sold, 47 ring), is the second black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Kitten's Joy) and his first on the main track. The winner is out of an unraced daughter of SW Spun Silk, the dam of GI Vosburgh S. hero Joking (Distorted Humor), while the third dam includes MGSW/GISP Fed Biz (Giant's Causeway). Wild Silk produced a filly and a colt by Oscar Performance, respectively, the last two seasons and is expecting a foal by Not This Time early next year. Good Magic’s Bat Flip Walks It Off in Central Park

Bat Flip (Good Magic) was sent off at odds of 23-5 to build upon a wire-to-wire maiden victory going two turns over the Aqueduct turf course Oct. 23, but showed a bit of a new dimension when forced to stalk the pace in Saturday's Central Park S. at the Big A. The $350,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad proved equal to the task in becoming a fifth stakes winner and first on the grass for his freshman sire (by Curlin).

Looking intent on making the running yet again from his low draw, Bat Flip tried to squeeze through a tight spot inside of the stretching-out Dr. Settle's Dream (Oscar Performance) into the first turn, but was forced to take back and chase from that one's outside when it became clear it was lead or bust for Dr. Settle's Dream. Content and nicely relaxed off the leader's flank beneath Jose Ortiz, Bat Flip poured in the pressure to take over at the head of the stretch and kept on well as a slightly troubled Dandy Handyman (Outwork) and favored General Jim (Into Mischief) rounded out the minors.

Fifth to future GISW Blazing Sevens (Good Magic) on debut sprinting over the Saratoga main track July 24, Bat Flip was well-beaten behind a 'TDN Rising Star' effort from Echo Again (Gun Runner) when next seen Aug. 20. Bat Flip was runner-up behind next-out GIII Futurity S. hero and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint third Nagirroc (Lea) in a local turf sprint maiden Sept. 24 before getting the job done last time.

The winner is one of two winners from his dam, a half-sister to GSW & MGISP turfer Money Multiplier (Lookin At Lucky) and GSW Intense Holiday (Harlan's Holiday). Krazy Kathy is also responsible for Bat Flip's yearling full-brother Bayou magic, a weanling full-sister and is due to Nyquist for 2023. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Japan Road to the Derby Kicks Off at Tokyo

The first of four legs of the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby, the $220,717 Cattleya S. (allowance), was staged Saturday afternoon over Tokyo's one-turn mile and for the second year in a row, a son of successful young stallion and former U.S. Eclipse Award winner Drefong drew first blood in the series.

Drawn one from the outside in afield of 10, Continuar (Jpn) broke alertly, but was ultimately beaten for speed and settled in the second flight of horses while racing three off the inside and with cover down the back straight. Waited with on the turn, the 29-10 second choice was produced wide into the stretch by the visiting Damian Lane, was asked to quicken inside the final furlong and kicked on nicely to best third favorite Mirror of Mind (Jpn) (Mind Your Biscuits) by a half-length (see below). Last year's Cattleya S. was won by Consigliere (Jpn), who went on to be third to Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) in the G3 Saudi Derby.

Purchased for ¥70 million ($635,432) at last year's JRHA Select Sales, Continuar overcame a double-digit draw to land his Oct. 8 debut over nine furlongs at Hanshin Oct. 8 and nearly made it two straight, missing narrowly in his first start against winners back at Hanshin 20 days ago. He is trained by Yoshito Yahagi, who conditioned Loves Only You (Jpn) and Marche Lorraine (Jpn) to famous wins at the Breeders' Cup in 2021.

“I think I want to take him to Saudi, then Dubai and then maybe Kentucky,” Yahagi said.

Continuar is out of a daughte rof MSW & G1SP Fusaichi Pandora (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), best known as the dam of two-time Japanese Horse of the Year and dual G1 Japan Cup heroine Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}). This is also the female family of champion El Gran Senor.

Continuar was awarded 10 points for his victory, while Mirror of Mind earned 4 points. The next race in the series is the Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun at Kawasaki Dec. 14.
