T O Keynes Stands Out in Champions Cup

Horse for the course T O Keynes (Jpn) (Sinister Minister) appears a very tough nut to crack in Sunday's G1 Champions Cup (ex Japan Cup Dirt) at Chukyo Racecourse, a race in which he bolted up by a half-dozen lengths over the classy Chuwa Wizard (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) twelve months ago.

The 5-year-old earned a berth in the 2022 G1 Saudi Cup with his victory here last year, but he was disappointing in eighth behind Emblem Road (Quality Road) in Riyadh back in February. He regrouped and validated odds-on favouritism in this track's G3 Heian S. in May and was fourth in the Listed Teio Sho June 29 before bouncing back to defeat this year's G2 UAE Derby hero Crown Pride (Jpn) (Reach the Crown {Jpn}) in the valuable Listed JBC Classic over the metric mile and a quarter at Morioka Nov. 3.

“He ran a strong race last year, so I'd like things to be the same this time too,” said jockey Kohei Matsuyama. “His experience overseas has helped him mature more. He took a bit of time to recover from his last race, but just recently in training he's done things in his usual way and has responded well.”

Thirteenth in the GI Kentucky Derby following his Meydan success, Crown Pride was given plenty of time to recover from his travels and resumed with a narrow loss in the Listed Nippon TV Hai at Funabashi Sept. 28. He made the running in the JBC Classic and held well, but was no match for the classy T O Keynes late and will try to even the score while backing up to 1800 metres Sunday.

Vela Azul (Jpn) (Eishin Flash {Jpn}) made a successful switch from dirt to turf to win last weekend's G1 Japan Cup and Jun Light Bolt (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) looks an entirely different proposition since moving from the grass to the dirt. A four-time winner and stakes-placed from 21 turf starts, the bay was runner-up in listed company in his main-track bow in July and has since won the Listed BSN Sho in July and the G3 Sirius S. over course and distance Oct. 1, defeating the 3-year-old Hapi (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) and Auvergne (Jpn) (Smart Falcon {Jpn}).

Desert Debuters: Expensive Nyquist Fillies Get Started

In this series, we will have a look at first-time starters entered for age-restricted maiden races on the week's main live program at Meydan Racecourse, focusing specifically on pedigree and/or performance in sales ring, both domestic and abroad. With the exception of Thursday, Dec. 1, Super Saturday, Mar. 4, and Dubai World Cup night Mar. 25, the main meeting at Meydan takes place on Fridays. Six meetings are to be staged at the UAE's flagship racecourse prior to the start of the Dubai World Cup Carnival Friday, Jan. 6, 2023. Nine Carnival cards are programmed from January through March. ASAWER (f, 2, Nyquist–How My Heart Works, by Not For Love) is a half-sister to fellow Maryland-bred dual stakes winner and Grade III-placed Monday Morning Qb (Imagining) and cost noted reseller Cary Frommer $200,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October Sale before hammering for $450,000 after breezing a furlong in :10 2/5 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale. There is further pedigree to recommend her, as How My Heart Works is a half-sister to MSW & MGSP Awesome Flower (Flower Alley), the dam of current dual Grade I winner and GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile runner-up Cyberknife (Gun Runner). This is also the female family of G1 Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed (Tiznow). Pat Dobbs rides for perennial leading trainer Doug Watson.

 

 

Habooba (f, 2, Nyquist–Westside Tapstress, by Lookin At Lucky) is out of a half-sister to Grade III winner Discreet Hero (Honour and Glory) and was also purchased out of this year's Midlantic sale, where she breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 flat and was knocked down for $475,000. The Feb. 17 foal is from the family of MGSW Informed (Tiznow).

Multiple Group 1 Winner Saffron Beach Fetches 3.6m at Tattersalls

Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) fetched a modest 55,000gns when sent through this ring four years ago at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, but having won six of her 13 starts, including Group 1 events in England and France, the 4-year-old lit up the tote at Park Paddocks, selling to HRH Prince Faisal Bin Khaled Bin Abdulaziz's Najd Stud for 3.6 million guineas early Tuesday evening during the second Sceptre Session. Consigned by Jane Chapple-Hyam Racing, Saffron Beach was a winner in Group 3 company at career start number two and capped a successful 3-year-old campaign in Newmarket's G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. Victorious in this year's G3 Duke of Cambridge S. at Royal Ascot, having finished a highly creditable fourth in the G1 Dubai Turf on seasonal debut, she easily accounted for the G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville and was also runner-up in the G1 Matron S. at Leopardstown on Irish Champions weekend. Saffron Beach holds an invitation for the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile Dec. 11, but connections explained that the filly would be pointed for the G1 Saudi Cup next February.

Hard Spun Colt Earns ‘Rising Star’ Laurels at Del Mar

Edge Racing and Muir Hut Stables' Spun Intended (c, 2, Hard Spun–Flora Dora, by First Dude) ran too good to lose his Oct. 30 debut at Santa Anita, just failing to overcome a brutal trip when dropping a half-length decision to the well-meant Fort Warren (Curlin). The latter earned the 'TDN Rising Star' nod for the win and Saturday afternoon, Spun Intended followed suit with a 'Rising Star'-worthy performance of his own where the surf meets the turf.

Spun Intended was off slowly in that Oct. 30 bow and was last of the octet early before improving on the turn while conceding stacks of ground. He knuckled down determinedly in the final furlong and was gaining inches on Fort Warren, but the wire came a few strides too soon. The chestnut had done his part since with a pair of solid morning trials and never looked like losing Saturday.

Sent off at odds of 4-5 that represented an overlay, the $100,000 Keeneland September yearling and $125,000 OBS March breezer (:21 1/5) showed good pace from gate four and advanced without being asked for much by Mike Smith to take up the running after an opening couple of furlongs in :21.95. Hugging the fence into the final five-sixteenths of a mile, having cut the half-mile in a slick :44.20, Spun Intended was a bit tardy in switching his leads, but carried an unassailable advantage into the final panel and trotted in to score by 6 1/2 emphatic lengths.

Spun Intended is an 11th 'TDN Rising Star' for Hard Spun and is the first foal out of Flora Dora, winner of the 2015 My Dear Girl S. of the Florida Stallion Series and the 2016 Busanda S. She was also third to Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro) in that year's GI CCA Oaks. A half-sister to SW Lindisfarne (City Zip), Flora Dora is the dam of a yearling Nyquist colt that was bought back on a bid of $185,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. Her foal of 2022 is a filly by Gun Runner and she was most recently bred to Candy Ride (Arg).
