Drew’s Gold Works For Amsterdam

Trainer Jim Chapman and Stuart Tsujimoto's Drew's Gold (Violence), who suffered the first defeat of his career when a game runner-up to Arabian Lion (Justify) in the GI Woody Stephens S. at Belmont Park June 10, breezed a half-mile in :47.88 over the Saratoga main track Thursday morning and is expected to make his next appearance in the GII Amsterdam S. July 29.

“He worked really good. He's never really been a good workhorse alone but as he's gotten older, he's more into it,” Chapman said. “I told [jockey] Jose [Ortiz] if you can follow someone, he's going to work a lot better for you. He got in behind a Rudy [Rodriguez] horse that horse was 15 lengths in front of him leaving the half. At the wire, he was still three or four lengths in front of him and then after the wire, he just blew by him.

“He's a beautiful mover anyways, but he really likes this track,” Chapman continued. “Hopefully, he can get this thing done in nice shape and we want to win the next one going seven-eighths,” he said, referring to the GI H. Allen Jerkens S. at the Spa Aug. 26.

Bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Drew's Gold sold for $25,000 as a Keeneland September yearling in 2021 and won his Churchill debut last May. Gone for 8 1/2 months thereafter, he resumed with a handy Laurel allowance score Jan. 28 befor winning the Jimmy Winkfield S. and Gold Fever S. at Aqueduct prior to his Woody Stephens try. Drew's Gold has amassed $302,620 to date in earnings.

The homebred switches to the dirt for the first time and he's got the pedigree to do it, as he is a half to Japanese Group 2 dirt winner Air Almas (Majestic Warrior) and is out of a half-sister to the dam of 2022 GIII Fantasy S. and recent Saylorville S. victress Yuugiri (Shackleford). THEURGIST (c, 4, Ghostzapper–Orphea, by Medaglia d'Oro) was well beaten over this course and distance on career debut last July, then ran the table in three starts against softer at Himeji on the NAR circuit this winter before finishing a respectable third behind fellow US-bred Lucks At There (Kantharos) in a Tokyo allowance June 25. A $410,000 Fasig-Tipton November weanling, the bay is a half-brother to Grade III-placed Born to Be Winner (Einstein {Brz}) and is out of an unraced daughter of MGSW/MGISP Nasty Storm (Gulch), also the dam of Irish multiple Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed Actress (Ire) (Declaration of War). ESCALE (c, 2, American Pharoah–Pretty Girl {Arg}, by Harlan's Holiday) turned in a very promising effort in his first trip to the post, coming home a longshot third in the local slop July 1. A $310,000 Keeneland September purchase last fall by owner Koji Maeda, the bay shares a second dam with Dark Love (Arg) (In the Dark {Arg}), seven-length winner of the G1 Estrellas Juvenile at a mile on turf at San Isidro last month. Escale's dam was a Group 1 winner in Argentina, a listed winner in France and multiple Grade II-placed in this country. B-Bonne Chance Farm LLC (KY)

Prat Suspended Next Wed-Fri At the Spa

Jockey Flavien Prat will sit out next Wednesday through Friday at Saratoga Race Course after opting not to appeal a three-day “careless riding” suspension incurred there in race eight on July 14.

Prat was aboard 9-year-old Happy Farm (Ghostzapper) in a $50,000 claiming sprint. He got forced out soon after the six-furlong start, but settled in the seven path.

Prat guided the gelding closer to the rail entering the turn, then cut from the three path down to the fence in front of Thinkaboutit (Uncaptured), who took up sharply while Prat looked over both shoulders in the aftermath.

Thinkaboutit rallied to finish first at 20-1, while Happy Farm ran third as the 2.15-1 favorite. The Equibase chart stated that Prat's mount “came in near the nine-sixteenths and shut off the winner.”
