Jockey Juan Gutierrez Becomes All-Time Leading Rider At Emerald Downs

Juan Gutierrez made riding history Wednesday afternoon at Emerald Downs, supplanting Gallyn Mitchell as the track's all-time leading rider.

With a 1¼-length victory on Stay in Grace in the featured $17,000 Muckleshoot Casino Purse, Gutierrez moved one ahead of Mitchell—1,420 to 1,419—to become No. 1 all-time at Emerald Downs. He had tied Mitchell's mark with a victory aboard Mike Operator earlier on the card.

“You know, I was excited the last eighth of a mile when I was pretty sure we would get there,” Gutierrez said in the winner's circle after the victory on Stay in Grace. “This is a great record because it has taken a long time to get there.”

Gutierrez, 51, notched his first Emerald Downs' win April 29, 2000 and has been a mainstay here ever since. He recorded 15 consecutive top-five finishes in the riders' standings during one stretch, including a riding title in 2012 with 117 wins. He also ranks No. 1 in track earnings with over $15 million and No. 3 in stakes victories with 68, including three wins in the Longacres Mile. He ranks second at the current meet with 47 victories through Wednesday.

A 2018 inductee into the Washington Racing Hall of Fame, Gutierrez has 2,031 overall wins, hitting the 2,000 mark aboard Semi Sweet in July.

Gutierrez will be honored with a winner's circle ceremony before Thursday's first race.

Mitchell, the leading rider at Emerald Downs since 2002, retired four years ago and now resides in southern California.

Stay in Grace, a 5-year-old Oregon-bred mare by Understatement, has three wins in her last four starts and improved to 10 for 22 lifetime with earnings of $78,347. Rigoberto Velasquez is the trainer for owners Jerry Carmody and John Sneesby.

In Wednesday's victory, Stay in Grace ($3.20) gained command into the turn and held off B C Z Middleton in the drive, running six furlongs in 1:09.79

Danzing Candy Colt Tops OBS Open Yearling Sale

Hip No. 632, a son of Danzing Candy consigned by Abbie Road Farm (Lisa McGreevy), Agent, went to Donato Lanni, Agent for $115,000 to top the open session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 October Yearling Sale.

The dark bay or brown colt is out of Bosserette, by Street Boss, a half sister to stakes winner Meditations.

Hip No. 702, a son of Declaration of War consigned by K P Sales, Agent, was sold to Mick Price Racing for $72,000. The dark bay or brown colt is out of Miss Prudence, by Discreetly Mine, a half-sister to stakes winner Annulment.
Hip No. 615, a daughter of Exaggerator consigned by Sennebec South Farm, went to Joseph Besecker for $62,000. The dark bay or brown filly, is out of stakes-placed Bazinga B, by Lion Hearted, from the family of champion Cash Deposit.
Hip No. 440, Kenner, a son of Laoban consigned by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), Agent, was sold to de Meric Sales for $55,000. The bay colt is out of Mystery Mix, by Awesome Again, a daughter of graded stakes winner Lovely Lil.
Hip No. 458, a daughter of Lord Nelson also consigned by Sennebec South Farm, went to Afleet Equine, Agent for $52,000. The chestnut filly is out of stakes-placed Our Eponene, a half-sister to stakes winner Our Fantene.
JAL Racing / Jose A. Lopez paid $52,000 for Hip No. 517, a son of Uncaptured consigned by Whitman Sales LLC, Agent. The chestnut colt is out of Senza Fina, by City Zip, a daughter of stakes winner Ragtime Gal.

For the session, 260 yearlings sold for a total of $2,887,400, compared with 267 bringing a total of $3,356,400 a year ago. The average price was $11,105 compared with $12,571 in 2019, while the median price was $7,750 compared with $8,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 20.7 percent compared with 23.3 percent a year ago.

At Tuesday's Selected session, 91 horses sold for a total of $3,650,500, compared with 130 yearlings bringing $5,689,200 at the 2019 Selected Sale. The average price was $40,115 compared with $43,763 last year, while the median price was $28,000 compared with $30,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 32.6 percent; it was 30.1 percent in 2019.

Hip No. 149, a daughter of Not This Time consigned by Abbie Road Farm (Lisa McGreevy), Agent, went to Tonja Terranova, Agent for $225,000 to top Selected Sale of Yearlings. The dark bay or brown filly is out of Midnight Magic, by Midnight Lute, a half sister to graded stakes winner Coalport.

For the 2-year-olds and horses of racing age section, 30 horses sold for a total of $823,500, averaging $27,450 with a $15,500 median figure and an 18.9 percent buyback percentage.

Zedan Racing Stables, Inc. went to $155,000 for Hip No. 39, a son of Empire Maker consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, to top the October Sale's Two Year Olds and Horses of Racing Age section. The 2-year-old bay colt, whose quarter in :21 1/5 was co-fastest at the distance at the Under Tack Show, is a half brother to graded stakes winner Majestic River out of graded stakes placed stakes winner Tempus Fugit, by Alphabet Soup.

The next item on the OBS agenda is the 2020 OBS Day of Racing, set for Tuesday, Nov. 24. The next sale is the 2021 Winter Mixed Sale, including the Horses of Racing Age section, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 25-26.

Curlin, Kitten’s Joy Top 2021 Stallion Roster For Hill ‘N’ Dale At Xalapa

A new chapter begins for Hill 'n' Dale as the stallions take up stud duty at Xalapa Farm just outside of Paris, Ky.

The 13-strong stallion roster, led by stalwart breed-shapers Curlin and Kitten's Joy, arrived a week ago to the newly renovated and restored 1,400-acre stallion station and nursery.

“We are aware of the pressures on the market due to the uncertain climate we find ourselves in,” said John G. Sikura, president of Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa. “Hill 'n' Dale will once again look to be an industry leader by offering exceptional value in its entire roster. We are all in this together and together we will grow stronger as an industry.

“There are two stallions on the roster in particular who embody our effort to provide exceptional value in these challenging times,” Sikura continued. “Maclean's Music is emerging as an important young sire. Jackie's Warrior has been described as the best two year old in the country. He is yet another example of his sire's ability to produce an elite runner. In addition, Violence who has led virtually every category since his runners hit the track is the co-leading sire of Grade 1 winners with the likes of Into Mischief. His future remains bright. I repeat, we are all in this together.”

Gun Runner Leads Three Chimneys’ 2021 Stallion Roster

Three Chimneys Farm announced its stud fees and roster for the 2021 breeding season.

“The industry finds itself in unusual times,” said Three Chimneys Chairman Gonçalo Torrealba. “One can take comfort in knowing that notwithstanding the challenges of this past year, the Thoroughbred industry proved that it can adapt by working together. In that spirit, we have made the decision to lower stud fees for the upcoming breeding season to accommodate fellow breeders.”

Horse of the Year Gun Runner enjoyed extraordinary success in the sales ring again this year with 40 yearlings averaging $267,750, with yearlings selling for up to $775,000. He was the leading first-crop sire at both Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland September.

As a group, his yearlings were consistently well-balanced, athletic and looked precocious and fast. The right buyers signed the tickets which means they will end up in the hands of the world's best trainers. The farm holds high hopes for the six-time Grade 1 winning son of Candy Ride.

Palace Malice ended last year with a Grade 1 winner in Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Structor who was hammered down as a 2-year-old for $850,000. He was one of five first crop stakes winners along with other Graded Stakes Winners Mr. Monomoy and Fly on Angel.

“Three Chimneys is also very pleased to introduce Volatile as the newest addition to the roster,” said Three Chimneys board member Doug Cauthen. “An absolutely gorgeous horse who sold as a yearling for $850,000, he truly has what every commercial breeder is looking for – brilliant speed, a top pedigree and a great physical. His sire Violence, the likely successor to Medaglia d'Oro, is currently the leading sire of Grade 1 winners this year. His pedigree further recommends him as a stallion being out of a stakes-winning Unbridled's Song daughter of the legendary and lightning fast Lady Tak.

“The model of consistency as a racehorse, Volatile posted a 112 Beyer, the fastest of the year, while winning the Aristides at Churchill by eight lengths, stopping the clock for six panels in 1:07.57,” Cauthen continued. “His win in the Grade 1 Vanderbilt at Saratoga, against a field loaded with all Grade 1 winners, saw him with the fastest final quarter in the history of the race.”
