Shamardal’s Earthlight Back With A Bang In France

Recovered from an injury which forced the abandonment of any and all plans for this term’s rescheduled one-mile Classics, the belated reintroduction of Godolphin’s homebred Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) in Sunday’s Listed Qatar Prix Kistena at Deauville was as straightforward as starting odds of 2-5 might suggest and the Andre Fabre trainee maintained his perfect record, going six-for-six, with an impressive 2 1/2-length dismissal of Wanaway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) in the six-furlong dash. Settled under cover in sixth after an alert departure from the outside stall, last term’s G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. hero eased into the clear at halfway and was hard on the steel until shaken up for control passing the eighth pole, powering clear with familiar gusto to score by daylight.

“It is a relief to see him win like he did,” said Godolphin’s Lisa Jane Graffard. “He was relaxed and very professional and you can see that the quality is still there. It has been almost a year off, but the lockdown and the setback might have been a blessing in disguise as it gave him more time to grow and mature. We will see how he comes out of the race and Sheikh Mohamed and Andre Fabre will decide on his near future.”

Earthlight is the first foal bred from G1 Fillies’ Mile runner-up Winters Moon (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), whose own dam Summertime Legacy (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) took the G3 Prix des Reservoirs and ran third in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary. Summertime Legacy has four stakes performers to her credit, headed by G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud victor Mandaean (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) and G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Wavering (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}). Summertime Legacy is herself the leading performer for Zawaahy (El Gran Senor), who in turn is kin to G1 Epsom Derby hero Golden Fleece (Nijinsky) and the stakes-producing Listed Modesty H. victrix Office Wife (Secretariat). From a family featuring GI Belmont S.-winning sire Jaipur (Nasrullah) and GSW sire Be My Guest (Northern Dancer), Winters Moon has a 2-year-old filly by Dubawi (Ire) and a yearling full-sister to Earthlight to come.

Del Mar Pick 6 Pays $288,005 On $192 Ticket

One gambler who no doubt was good, but also no doubt lucky, walked away Saturday evening with a payoff of $288,005 as the lone  holder of a ticket with all six winners in the Pick Six at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, Calif.

The player, wagering on TwinSpires advance deposit wagering, put up $192 and hoped for the best – and he or she got it.

The Pick Six had a carryover of $76,102 to start the day and $301,511 of “fresh” money came after it. Then, when jockey Brice Blanc rode the rail home in the nitecap aboard Resarcio to tally by three-quarters of a length, the big hit became reality and there was probably a party getting ready to get started.

The six-race sequence began with Saturday's 5th race won by #3 Girther, who paid $7.60. Then it followed on this way: 6th — #6 Speedy Justice ($3.80); 7th – # 4 Lil Sydney ($10.00); 8th — #5 Bob and Jackie ($18.40); 9th — #7 Teachers Big Dream ($20.60), and 10th – #6 Resarcio ($16.00).

Del Mar will be back in action Sunday with a new Pick Six wager available. First post is 2 p.m.

Leinster Leads 1-2 Finish For Rusty Arnold In Shakertown Stakes

Amy Dunne, Brenda Miley, Westrock Stables and Jean Wilkinson's Leinster collared 2018 Shakertown winner Bound for Nowhere at midstretch and held off stablemate Totally Boss by a head to win the Grade 2 Shakertown Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione for trainer Rusty Arnold, Leinster covered the 5½ furlongs on a firm turf course in a course-record 1:00.86.

Bound for Nowhere, under regular rider Julio Garcia, led the field through fractions of :21.16 and :43.55 with Tiger Blood in closest pursuit and Leinster stalking in fourth.

Bound for Nowhere opened a daylight advantage in the upper stretch and grudgingly gave way to Leinster, who in turn held off Totally Boss.

The victory was worth $90,000 and improved Leinster's bankroll to $524,211 with a record of 21-4-6-4. Leinster is a 5-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Majestic Warrior out of the Royal Academy mare Vassar.

Leinster paid $22.40, $8.60 and $5.40. Totally Boss, with Brian Hernandez Jr. aboard, returned $7.40 and $5.20 with Bound for Nowhere finishing another neck back in third and paying $3.80 to show.

Fast Boat finished another half-length back in fourth and was followed in order by Extravagant Kid, Tell Your Daddy, Corruze, Tiger Blood, Just Might, Texas Wedge, Real News, Shared Legacy and Wildman Jack.

Tyler Gaffalione: “(Leinster) broke well. He put himself right in the race. I was able to drop in behind the speed. I had the perfect trip, really. All credit goes to (trainer) Rusty (Arnold) and his team. He told me when I got to the Paddock that (Leinster) was ready today. And he definitely showed it.”

Did you think you won the photo? “I was very confident. I had the momentum going forward.”

What was it like waiting out that photo finish? “It was probably the first time in my life I was begging for a dead heat. I've watched it three times and I couldn't tell (who won). It was going to work good for me either way, but it would have worked really good for me if it was a dead heat.”

Did you think both horses would have performances like that? “I did. They both came back from their one race at Churchill (a May 29 allowance, their first start of 2020), which they didn't win. But they were hung up in the virus this winter in Florida and we didn't get them going as early as we wanted. They have really done well here, both horses.”

How do you get them to peak again here for Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1)? “Not sure yet, but I'm going to work on that. I think the race today is probably good enough to get them both in. But we'll work our way backwards from that. That's where we want them both.”
