Plainchant Best In The Eclipse

Back in her comfort zone after a latest second in the seven-furlong G2 Prix du Calvados at Deauville on Aug. 22, Alain Jathiere, Maurizio Guarnieri and Sauro-Andrea Fiordelli’s Plainchant (Fr) (Gregorian {Ire}) was in dominating mood in Friday’s G3 Prix Eclipse at Chantilly. Blazing the trail from the outset with the emphasis on speed over a furlong shorter, the bay strained the arms of Valentin Seguy throughout and by halfway had all rivals covered. Clear in the closing stages, the 13-5 second favourite was eased late to record an impressive five-length success from the 23-10 favourite Legal Attack (GB) (Shalaa {Ire}). “She is loaded with speed and a very good filly,” trainer Maurizio Guarnieri said. “I knew I had something good after her maiden and she has gone from strength to strength. She is better back at this six and at halfway I knew she’d win. She will not go further than seven this year and we’ll take our time to find a suitable race.”

Plainchant had got off the mark at the expense of the subsequent G3 Prix d’Arenberg scorer Kalahara (GB) (Frankel {GB}) over this trip at La Teste de Buch on June 3 and in hindsight was hugely underestimated and overpriced when beating Stardevote at odds of 16-1 in the Listed Criterium du Bequet over that course and distance on July 26. Headed late on by Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) when attempting to make all in the Calvados, she still finished in front of the subsequent G3 Prix d’Aumale winner King’s Harlequin (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and the Listed Ingabelle S. runner-up No Speak Alexander (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}) over a distance that probably stretches her to the limit.

The dam Nadinska (GB) (Doyen {Ire}), who also has the yearling filly Alice Blue (Fr) (Reliable Man {GB}), is a half to three black-type performers headed by the G2 Prix de Sandringham winner and G1 Sun Chariot S. third Laugh out Loud (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}) who in turn produced the GII San Marcos S. and G3 Gallinule S. scorer Platinum Warrior (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Nadinska’s other half-siblings include the stouter-staying pair of the Listed Pinnacle S. and Listed Chalice S. winner Suzi’s Decision (GB) (Act One {GB}) and Baghdad (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) who was third in the Glorious S.

TAA Named Official Aftercare Partner of 2020 Breeders’ Cup

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) has been named the official aftercare partner of the 2020 Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland. The TAA is also an official charity of the Breeders' Cup.

The TAA fundraises to award annual grants to accredited Thoroughbred aftercare nonprofits. At this year's Breeders' Cup, the TAA is asking connections of Breeders' Cup entrants to pledge a percentage of their potential Breeders' Cup earnings to the TAA. Those interested in making a pledge can contact the TAA office at info@thoroughbredaftercare.org, 859-224-2756 or by visiting ThoroughbredAftercare.org/Pledge.

“It is our privilege to see Thoroughbreds at their finest moments in the Breeders' Cup World Championships and it is this industry's collective responsibility to see to their aftercare when the celebrations are over,” said Dora Delgado, TAA board member and executive vice president and chief racing officer at Breeders' Cup. “As a proud founding member and supporter of the TAA's mission and vision, we partner with them in their work and dedication to Thoroughbred aftercare.”

During the World Championships, the TAA will present the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes (G2), formerly the Marathon Stakes. In addition, the TAA has partnered with TVG to be a part of the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile presented by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1), the feature race on Future Stars Friday Nov. 6.

As a seed money donor, the Breeders' Cup has been a supporter of the TAA since its inception, along with Keeneland and The Jockey Club.

“While this year's event may be different, we are honored to be a partner of the Breeders' Cup and we are grateful for their ongoing support,” TAA President John Phillips said. “Aftercare is our responsibility to the horse and our obligation to the sport. We encourage those who are racing at the highest level in the World Championships to give back to secure a future for our horses and for our industry.”

Mill Reef Takes Centre Stage On Saturday

Newbury’s G2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef S. has been won by the sprinting luminaries Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) in recent times and Saturday’s renewal has some potential class acts lurking in the line-up for the six-furlong feature. Setting the standard is John Dance’s Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) following his third placing in the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville on Aug. 23, but he has several unexposed rivals placing a target on him and will have to be every bit as good as he looked there to ward them off. They include King Power Racing’s highly-regarded four-length Sept. 3 Newcastle novice scorer Fivethousandtoone (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) from the Andrew Balding stable having its finest year to date. He was beaten 3/4 of a length on debut by Bahrain Pride (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) at Windsor on Aug. 17 and that rival re-opposes having subsequently doubled his tally a fortnight later in the Listed Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy. Shaikh Nasser Al Khalifa’s Line of Departure (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) beat the solid group performer Yazaman (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) comfortably in Doncaster’s Weatherbys Racing Bank £200,000 2-Y-O S. over 6 1/2 furlongs on Sept. 10 and could be open to further progress as a half-brother to Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}).

John Dance said, “We’ve been delighted with Rhythm Master and I’m very much looking forward to the race on Saturday. He was very green [at Deauville], particularly in the preliminaries. I don’t think he could believe he could see thousands of people, as there was obviously no crowd at Haydock–it was very much like the first day at school for him. I think the soft ground was a bit of a shock as well, so for him to run as well as he did was very encouraging and also left the impression that there’s hopefully more to come.”

Ed Crisford said of Bahrain Pride, “This has been the plan for him since Ripon. He’s in great form and deserves a crack at a Group 2. It does look a very strong race, but our fellow has done nothing wrong, I think he’s improving with racing and he deserves a crack at a higher grade now.” Andrew Balding has yet to win the race named after his father’s great and commented, “Fivethousandtoone won well at Newcastle and took the step forward we hoped he would after finishing second at Windsor. He is a horse that I think a lot of, but this is a competitive race in a much tougher grade. He has looked very good at home and his work has been impressive. Hopefully he can step forward again.”

At Ayr, where the QTS Ayr Gold Cup takes precedence as one of the leading sprint handicaps of the season, the Listed Jordan Electrics Doonside Cup sees Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum’s Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) enjoy a class drop following a break having last been seen finishing runner-up in the G1 Prince of Wales’s S. at Royal Ascot on June 17. The Mar. 21 G1 Ranvet S. and Apr. 11 G1 Queen Elizabeth S. winner encounters another top-level performer in need of a confidence boost in last year’s G1 Queen Anne S. hero Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper). Addeybb’s rider Tom Marquand is keen to renew his partnership with the 6-year-old and said, “He’s a cracking animal. Hopefully the ground doesn’t dry out too much. He certainly looks in good order at home. It’s probably a different path to Champions Day, but it’s perfect for him. He should have his conditions. A mile and a quarter on a galloping track, that’s what he wants. It was a well-spotted race by Willia [Haggas], perfect timing. Hopefully it will set him up nicely for the big day. He’s got the penalty, but he’s a dual Group 1 winner and hopefully he can overcome that.”
