Nominations Open For The Right Horse Initiative’s Good People For Good Horses Awards

The Right Horse Initiative strongly believes that great work deserves to be recognized and celebrated. From the veterinarians, farriers, volunteers and trainers to the incredible storytellers who help spread the word about equine adoption, it takes a network of support to help each horse find a wonderful home. The second annual Good People for Good Horses Awards will recognize these hardworking members of the equine community who dedicate their time and talents to helping horses in transition.

“The Good People for Good Horses Awards is an opportunity to acknowledge those working tirelessly to care for horses in need and help them find loving homes,” said Christie Schulte Kappert, Program Director of The Right Horse Initiative. “We look forward to celebrating the unwavering dedication of these individuals across the country who, despite a challenging year, continue to step up for horses in transition.”

The Right Horse Initiative invites all members of the horse community to nominate one or more U.S.-based individuals or organizations in the following six categories for a Good People for Good Horses Award:

Veterinarian or Veterinary Technician*
Trainer
Volunteer
Farrier
Community Partner (such as a riding club, event center, boarding barn, etc.)
Wild Card (anyone else—such as member of the media, photographer, advocate, social media influencer, fundraiser or staff member)

*A total of three awards will be given in the Veterinarian/Veterinary Technician category based on geographical location in Western, Central and Eastern regions of the United States.

A committee of reviewers from The Right Horse Initiative will review submissions and recommend winners based on subjective criteria. Awards will be given based upon the nominee's contributions to equine adoption efforts and the success and impact of the organization they serve. Nominations are due no later than December 31, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. EST with winners announced the week of January 25, 2021.

OTTB United App Will Bring Together Retired Racehorse Buyers, Sellers

The Retired Racehorse Project and OTTB United jointly announce today the release of OTTB United, a mobile app that unites sellers, buyers, and shippers of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses and gives back to the Thoroughbred placement community. The app is designed to make the entire process, from listing a horse, to communicating between buyer and seller, to organizing shipping to a horse's new home, as easy as a few taps of a button.

The app is also designed to give back to the Thoroughbred placement community: a portion of the premium subscription fee is donated to the Retired Racehorse Project, which takes a market-based approach to Thoroughbred aftercare to drive demand for ex-racehorses; subscribers can select from a list of aftercare organizations and for-profit resellers to receive an additional contribution.

“We are so fortunate to partner with the Retired Racehorse Project,” says OTTB United founder Amy Rubin. “The organization's mission is at the center of everything we want to achieve, and helping off-the-track Thoroughbreds is our number-one goal. The Retired Racehorse Project has strengthened the Thoroughbred community, and it's our hope that the OTTB United app produced in partnership will unite that community on one platform.”

OTTB United was designed to meet the specific needs of the Thoroughbred industry and creates a network to help more ex-racehorses find good homes. Uniting sellers, buyers, and shippers on a mobile platform greatly simplifies the entire process from start to finish, and helps both buyers and sellers navigate changing rules on social media that prohibit animal sales.

“The RRP works to increase the market for Thoroughbreds after racing in the equestrian world and we are always seeking out new ways to make that process easier and more successful,” says RRP executive director Jen Roytz. “We understand and respect the reasons for social media sites to place animal sales posts under increased scrutiny and it has surely gone a long way to prevent unwanted animals to end up in the wrong hands. Help Needed: Penn Vet Strangles Survey Explores Reporting Preferences

Horse owners and veterinarians are being asked to complete a short survey on strangles produced by Penn Vet's New Bolton Center.

Strangles became a nationally monitored disease in 2017; this means that each state can have varying rules and regulations on how or if strangles is reported. Some states require that veterinarians notify the state if they have a suspected strangles case (notifiable), while other states only receive confirmed laboratory results (monitoring only). Still other states require that the state veterinarian be notified; the state vet can then put official quarantines and biosecurity measures in place (actionable).

Since so many states operate in different manners, there is no comprehensive database to show the prevalence and distribution of strangles in the United States. Additionally, there is no consensus as to if the disease should be notifiable or actionable, partially because of how difficult it can be to determine if a horse is free from disease.

This study was created to determine if horse owners and veterinarians want equine strangles to be a notifiable and/or actionable disease. Penn Vet is asking for responses to the survey, even if people haven't seen the disease. The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Webinar: How 100 Horses Are Helping Horses Everywhere

Morris Animal Foundation, a nonprofit leader in advancing animal health, will host a webinar about the Pioneer 100 Horse Initiative on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2020, at 1 p.m. EST. The initiative is a first-of-its kind project that will follow 100 horses over time to create a wellness program to prevent equine disease.

The webinar, “How 100 Horses Are Helping Horses Everywhere Have Healthier Lives,” features Dr. Carrie Finno, Associate Professor of Population Health and Reproduction at the University of California, Davis. She'll discuss how her team is collecting biological samples to correlate findings to disease development and drug metabolism as a gateway to applying precision medicine principles to horses. Webinar attendees will learn more about this unique and impactful project and its potential to proactively save horses' lives.

The webinar is part of the Foundation's educational series, “AnimalNEWS 101,” which provides monthly animal health lessons for pet owners and science enthusiasts from a wide range of experts.
