‘If I’m A One-Woman Show, I Brought The Right Filly’: Foreman Makes Her Saratoga Debut As Consignor

One's first trip to Saratoga is often unforgettable. That's why people keep coming back to the same spot in upstate New York every summer.

This is far from the first Saratoga sojourn for consignor Susan Foreman, but it'll be a memorable one nonetheless.

Foreman, born and based in Ontario, will consign her first horse at this year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale. The single-horse consignment doesn't take up much room in Barn 3, but the right horse can fill a lot of space.

The Medaglia d'Oro filly, offered Monday as Hip 22, is out of the winning Fusaichi Pegasus mare Vulcan Rose, whose three foals to race are all black type earners, led by the Grade 3 winner and popular young stallion Flameaway.

Though many of Vulcan Rose's foals have been foaled in Canada, the filly offered Monday was born in Kentucky, bred by British Columbia-based Deborah Holmes' Phoenix Rising Farm.

“I've got a great owner who gave this filly to me to prep,” Foreman said. “She foals mares with me, so with this breeding, she needed to be with the best of the best. They sent her to me in mid-April for prepping, and here I am. She fits the bill. She's gorgeous, classy, with pedigree. I couldn't have asked for a nicer horse. If I'm a one-woman show, I brought the right filly.”

Monday's sale will mark a new milestone for Foreman, but that's no indication that any of this is new for the consignor. She has sold in Kentucky and Ontario for decades, and she'll have 15 horses in the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Ontario Division) Canadian Premier Yearling Sale on Sept. 1 at Woodbine, where she is no stranger to the top of the standings.

Foreman has a full-service farm in Tottenham, Ontario, with over two decades of experience with Thoroughbreds. However, her equine roots trace back to the show horse world with different breeds. The rigorous process of making sure a horse is pristine for judges made for a natural transfer when Foreman moved into the Thoroughbred realm, and the show ring was traded for the sales ring.

“I have done this since I was a little girl,” she said. “I've shown horses, conformation horses on the line, so I have a lot of attention to detail ingrained in me. Coming into the Thoroughbreds and showing them was uncomplicated for me, because since I was a small girl, it was so important for me to have them fit, muscular, shiny, clean, clipped properly.”

Even with a single-horse operation, Foreman acknowledged that she couldn't do it alone. She brought a pair of longtime friends and associates with her for her first Saratoga consignment: Amanda Hutchinson from Ontario, and Israel Romo from Kentucky.

Romo has worked in the WinStar Farm stallion operation, but her relationship with Foreman goes even further back.

“We've been friends for close to 20 years and he still shows horses for me,” Foreman said. “He's my go-to guy when I need extra help down here, he finds me all my help, so he's a key asset for me to show.”

This year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale has a considerable Canadian presence, with fellow Ontario-based outfits Cara Bloodstock and Sam-Son Farm also bringing consignments.

Though COVID-19-related restrictions aren't as tight as they were at the same time last year, Foreman said there were still plenty of administrative hoops to jump through to get from one side to the other.

“It's tough,” she said. “My easy access for me was I hauled her down here myself, so I go in the commercial lane, and have all my export papers done with my broker, no problem. But, to come without her would have been a problem. You'd have had to fly. For me, transporting her with all of my equipment and my groom was the easy way to get here.

“There's a lot of documents to cross – declaration of importation, who's traveling with me,” Foreman continued. “Every detail is not overlooked on who is coming back and forth: my vehicle, plates, VIN number, everything. But, once you get all that paperwork, it's just a barcode. They scan you, and away you go.”

It took the right horse to get Foreman to the Saratoga sale, and a potentially special one for her to endure the logistical headaches. Even though Foreman has high expectations for her Medaglia d'Oro filly, the consignor does not plan to rest on her laurels, regardless of how she performs on Monday. This may be her first Saratoga sale as a consignor, but she had no intention of making it her last.

“It was a goal of mine to get here,” Foreman said. “Hopefully I'm bringing this one's half-sister and some other nice, well-bred colts next year.”

‘May It Be A Long, Fun Ride’: Half-Brother To Rachel Alexandra On Offer At Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale

The Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale catalog is filled with sterling pedigrees, but even among the very best of the breed, there are still some pages that can bring a page-turner to a full stop.

Seeing a name like Rachel Alexandra's high up on the page can have just that anchor-throwing effect.

Tuesday's session of the elite Saratoga sale will feature a half-brother to the 2009 Horse of the Year, from the first crop of Spendthrift Farm's Bolt d'Oro. They share plenty of similar blood, with Bolt d'Oro being the son of Rachel Alexandra's sire, Medaglia d'Oro.

The Bolt d'Oro colt is the ninth foal out of the Grade 2-placed stakes-winning Roar mare Lotta Kim, who gained notoriety with her first foal when Rachel Alexandra rocketed to the top of her class, with wins against male competition in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes, Haskell Stakes, and Woodward Stakes, en route to Horse of the Year honors.

In the years that followed, breeder Dede McGehee's Heaven Trees Farm has typically offered the colts out of Lotta Kim at auction, meaning the opportunities to buy into the family have been few and far between. The colt to be offered on Tuesday will be just the fourth to go through the ring during the yearling season, three of which have hammered for $400,000 or more.

“It's hard to find a fault on him,” Heaven Trees manager Adolfo Martinez said about the Bolt d'Oro colt. “This kid's been perfect from day one. He's played the part the whole way. He's not had any trouble, he's very easygoing, good head, good mind, great body.”

Besides Rachel Alexandra, Lotta Kim's best runners have tended to be her colts. Dolphus, by Lookin at Lucky, finished second in the Grade 3 Pimlico Special, and he now stands at Darby Dan Fam in Kentucky. The Awesome Again colt Wooderson finished second in the Alydar Stakes at Saratoga, and he entered stud in Arkansas.

The Heaven Trees operation has obviously had outstanding fortune crossing Lotta Kim with the Medaglia d'Oro line, and Martinez said McGehee didn't want to stray too far from that line. The added size Bolt d'Oro brought to the table, along with a lower stud fee than top commercial sire Medaglia d'Oro, led McGehee to send the mare to the rookie stallion.

“We went to look at the stallion at Spendthrift, and he's a very good-looking horse,” Martinez said. “[McGehee] liked his race record. She was also not looking to go super expensive. The Medaglia d'Oro she had before was a little on the smaller side. Of course, the mare's 20 now, so she was a little cautious about her maybe giving you an 'old mare' foal, just a smaller foal.”

Lotta Kim delivered a Bernardini filly on March 21, and she was bred to Curlin later in the season. However, the 21-day checkup revealed she had lost the foal, and McGehee elected to give the mare the season off, instead of trying her again. Martinez said a decision hadn't been made for a 2022 mating, but given the mare's age, they would give her a thorough evaluation before deciding whether to send her back to the breeding shed or pension her.

Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency consigns the colt at the Saratoga sale, marking the first time the operation has worked with Heaven Trees at the auction.

[Story Continues Below]

Martinez said Heaven Trees normally preps its yearlings in-house, but the labor shortage that has handcuffed many businesses across the country hit the Lexington, Ky., farm, as well. Heaven Trees will also work with Hill 'n' Dale at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, but Martinez said he expected the farm's slate of offerings for the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale will be prepared by the Heaven Trees staff.

Hill 'n' Dale has handled plenty of horses with household names in their pedigrees, but general manager Jared Burdine said he knew what he had with this colt.

“He's a gorgeous horse that's got a stallion's pedigree,” Burdine said. “He glides across the ground. He's a big, long scopey-looking horse, definitely that classy Saturday afternoon type.”

Martinez said he wouldn't be able to make it to Saratoga to watch the colt sell, but he was excited at the thought of which buyers might try to chase the horse, and what the future might hold from there.

After all, he's got some awfully big shoes to fill.

“I hope he satisfies his new connections as well as he's satisfied ours,” Martinez said. “We love him. He's a special horse, and it'd be great to follow him around. I hope he gets in the right hands, and may luck be on his side, and the connections' side, too. May it be a long, fun ride for whoever gets him. That's all I ask.”

This year's edition of the Tattersalls August Sale has again attracted consignments from many of the world's foremost owner/breeders including Ballydoyle Stables, Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estate Company, as well as drafts from many of the UK and Ireland's leading trainers.

High-class French form is a feature amongst the leading lots cataloged in the August Sale. Agent Jamie Railton will offer Pascal Bary's Group 3 winner Pretrville, runner-up in the Group 2 Prix du Muguet in May, alongside a pair of Listed-placed two-year-olds colts in Bunglejungleparty and Papa Don't Preach.

Well-bred colts with high-class form are a customary feature of drafts from Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle Stables and the Group 3 placed duo Arturo Toscanini and Lough Derg and the Listed placed Horoscope look certain to attract plenty of interest.

Several promising lightly-raced 3-year-olds look certain to pique the interest of buyers including the Paddy Twomey trained Beamish, the Teofilo half-brother to dual Group 3 winner Bourree who was an impressive three-length winner of his only start at Leopardstown. The winning Territories gelding London Royal has earned an official rating of 94 following only three starts for trainer Ted Walsh, and Roger Varian's 90-rated Dinoo broke his maiden by four lengths on his most recent start at Haydock. William Haggas will offer the progressive Sea the Stars gelding Chalk Stream, rated 86 following a win on his most recent start at York.

Consignments from Juddmonte Farms are always amongst the highlights of horses-in-training sales at Tattersalls and their select August Sale draft is no exception featuring the smart three-year-old colt Fabilis, a 96-rated full brother to Group 3 winner Monarchs Glen. The ever-popular Godolphin draft includes a customary offering of smartly-bred fillies led by Bright Spirit, a daughter of Dubawi out of the three-time Group 3 winner Local Time.

Buyers looking for well-related fillies will have plenty more to consider including the Baroda Stud-consigned Golden Hind, a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Amazing Maria, and Burning Sea, a full-sister to Group 3 winner Blue de Vega and to the dam of Group 2 winner Angel Power who will be offered by the Castlebridge Consignment.

The largest consignment comes from Shadwell Estate Company who have a draft of 44 lots catalogued featuring unexposed winning 3-year-olds Afkaar, Maraakiz, Mothill, and Taskheer and several highly-rated older horses including the 94-rated Taqareer. Amongst the 27 lots offered by the Castlebridge Consignment are two promising 3-year-olds trained by John and Thady Gosden in Rifleman and Zagato. The 95-rated Rifleman has shown smart form in his three starts this year whilst the regally-bred Zagato, a son of Frankel out of the dual Group 1 winner Izzi Top, earned an official rating of 86 following an easy 3 1/4-length win at Thirsk on his most recent start.

Commenting on the catalog for the Tattersalls August Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“The Tattersalls August Sale was introduced for the first time in 2020 in response to COVID-related circumstances, but the enthusiasm for the sale from both vendors and purchasers and an extraordinary clearance rate made it an easy decision to make it a permanent fixture. With the Tattersalls July Sale being held in more normal circumstances this year, it was natural that the catalogue size for the second edition of the August Sale would reduce but we are still delighted to catalogue 458 lots over two days that will appeal to a wide cross section of buyers, both domestic and further afield. We are also pleased that buyers from the key Middle Eastern markets will find it much easier to travel to the UK for the sale with the recent easing of restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers.”

The Tattersalls August Sale will take place from Tuesday, Aug. 31 to Wednesday, Sept. 1, and buyers unable to attend the sale in person will be able to bid via the Tattersalls Live Internet Bidding platform or telephone bidding through members of the Tattersalls team. Full details of the expanded bidding options can be found on the Tattersalls website.
