Gunnevera to Stand at Florida’s Pleasant Acres Stallions

Multiple graded stakes winner Gunnevera (Dialed In-Unbridled Rage, by Unbridled) will stand at Pleasant Acres Stallions near Morriston, Fla., for the 2021 breeding season. The Salomon Del Valle colorbearer goes to the breeding shed with a record of 21-6-5-3 and earnings of $5,561,800. It was announced earlier this month that he had been retired from racing.

“Helen and I, and the entire team at Pleasant Acres Stallions, are thrilled to have Gunnevera begin his stallion career at our farm,” said Joe Barbazon, owner of Pleasant Acres and syndicate manager. “He has had a very exciting career–earning more than $5.5 million–while beating multiple Grade I horses like Always Dreaming (Bodemeister), West Coast (Flatter), Practical Joke (Into Mischief), and Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile) on the track.”

Winner of the 2017 GII XpressBet Fountain of Youth S. as well as the 2016 GII Saratoga Special S. and GIII Delta Downs Jackpot S., Gunnevera was perhaps better known for the races he didn’t win over a career that spanned four seasons. In 2018, he was second to eventual champion Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky) in the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic after finishing in the runner-up spot to Yoshida (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}) in the GI Woodward S. The year prior, the Antonio Sano trainee was also second to eventual champion West Coast in the GI Travers S. In addition to being runner-up in some of the country’s biggest races, he also placed in the 2019 G1 Dubai World Cup in what would be his final start. Overall, he won or placed in 11 black-type events, 10 of which were graded.

Plagued by foot problems throughout his career, Gunnevera had overcome the loss of his dam and was a bottle-fed orphan from the time he was 10 days old. He goes to stud as the highest earner to ever stand in Florida.

Gunnevera will stand in 2021 for a fee of $6,000.

Gunnevera Retired from Racing

Salomon Del Valle’s Gunnevera (Dialed In–Unbridled Rage, by Unbridled), a winner of a trio of graded stakes and runner up in a quartet of Grade I/Group 1’s through a career that spanned four seasons, has been retired from racing. Stud plans have yet to be determined.

Victorious three starts at two, including the GII Saratoga Special S. and the GIII Delta Jackpot, the Antonio Sano trainee took the next season’s GII Xpressbet Fountain of Youth S. before finishing third in the GI Florida Derby. Later that summer, he won Gulfstream’s Tangelo S. ahead of a runner-up effort behind West Coast (Flatter) in the GI Travers S. During his 4-year-old season, he was third in the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational before collecting a win in a Gulfstream optional claimer later that summer. Runner up in the GI Woodward, he filled the same position behind Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky) in the 2018 GI Breeders’ Cup Classic. Third in his second attempt at the Pegasus World Cup, he made what would be his final start in the 2019 G1 Dubai World Cup, finishing third behind Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet).

The 6-year-old, who has faced foot issues, throughout much of his career–including a fracture last summer–retires with six wins from 21 starts and earnings of $5,561,800.

‘Once In A Lifetime Horse’ Gunnevera Retired, Stud Plans Pending

Trainer Antonio Sano told the Daily Racing Form this week that Gunnevera has officially been retired from racing. Salomon Del Valle's 6-year-old son of Dialed In fractured a left hind leg while training last summer, and has not been able to make it back to the races.

Over the course of his 21-race career, Gunnevera earned over $5.5 million. He took his trainer to the Kentucky Derby in 2017, finishing seventh. Gunnevera won six races and hit the board in a total of six Grade 1 events, including the 2019 Dubai World Cup (third), the 2018 Breeders' Cup Classic (second), and the 2018 Pegasus World Cup (third).

“His race in the Breeders' Cup was the most special for me,” Sano told drf.com. “It was very emotional, very exciting. One more second and he wins the race. He's a once in a lifetime horse who I can't thank enough for what he's also meant to my career.”

Stallion plans have not yet been confirmed for Gunnevera, but Sano hopes he can begin his breeding career early in 2021.

Antonio Sano Readying Pair Of Promising 2-Year-Olds For Saratoga Meet

Trainer Antonio Sano started making plans for the upcoming Saratoga Race Course meet after saddling his fourth 2-year-old winner of the Spring Meet at Gulfstream Park Saturday.

The popular Venezuela native has been particularly impressed with Papetu, a five-length winner in his Saturday debut, and Hara, a filly who also graduated with a five-length victory Friday.

“The two horses are the best horses in my barn,” said Sano, who has saddled 21 winners, five fewer than leading trainer Todd Pletcher, during the Spring Meet. “I'm going to send Papetu and Hara to Saratoga.”

Papetu was always in control over his nine rivals under Leonel Reyes. Purchased by Magic Stables LLC for $80,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September sale, Papetu is by Dialed In, the sire of Sano-trained multiple graded-stakes winner Gunnevera. The first-out win hardly surprised his trainer, but the manner in which he dismissed his rivals was a bit of a revelation.

“I expected him to come from behind and close. The race came up different. It was a surprise to me,” Sano said. “He is a good horse. I told the owner that this was a very good horse.”

A day earlier, Sano sent out Hara, who scored a dominating front-running triumph in a 5 ½-furlong dash for fillies. The daughter of Hard Spun, who is owned by Briannjenn Racing LLC, was purchased for $30,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September sale.

Sano has enjoyed success in the past while sending promising 2-year-olds from South Florida to Saratoga, most notably with Gunnevera, who scored his first graded-stakes victory in the 2016 Saratoga Special (G2) on his way to earning $5.5 million.

Earlier in the meet, Sano saddled Swaggy George, a son of Not This Time, for a four-length triumph in a five-furlong maiden special weight race taken off the turf. The Sano-trained Espia, a son of Creative Cause who finished third behind Swaggy George, came right back to capture a 5-furlong maiden special weight event on turf.
