MGISW Echo Zulu Earns Fastest Six Furlong Beyer Of The Year, Ballerina Could Be Next

Winchell Thoroughbreds and L and N Racing's Echo Zulu (Gun Runner) has won three Grade Is and earned an Eclipse Award, but in Wednesday's GII Honorable Miss H. the 4-year-old filly added to her resume when she posted a Beyer Speed Figure of 112–the fastest number recorded by any horse going six furlongs this year.

“I'm extremely proud of her race. That obviously was an impressive race and that would put a [big] number on it,” Asmussen said. “I'm very happy with how she came out of the race yesterday. I'm unbelievably impressed with her and I honestly didn't expect anything less.”

While the GI Ballerina H. Aug. 26 at Saratoga is the likely next target for Echo Zulu, neither Asmussen nor Winchell Thoroughbreds' racing manager David Fiske ruled out a future start against males.

“It probably has everything to do with how Gunite [by Gun Runner, who is entered in Saturday's GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H.] does in the division with the common ownership,” Asmussen said. “But I'm definitely not scared to run her against anybody. We'll do whatever is best for the other horses that Winchell and L and N own.”

Winchell and Asmussen also campaign MGSW and MGISP Wicked Halo (Gun Runner), who won last weekend's Twin Bridges S. at Ellis Park.

“The plan last week was that if Wicked Halo ran well and Echo Zulu ran well, they would both show up in the Ballerina,” said Fiske. “We'll try to keep everyone healthy and go on down the path. People are speculating that Echo Zulu should go to the [GI] Breeders' Cup Sprint and pass the [GI Breeders' Cup] Filly and Mare Sprint. We do have Wicked Halo, but I don't know what we would do with Gunite because he could win the Sprint, too.”

Gun Runner’s Dreamlike Avoids Stretch Problems to Break Maiden

2nd-Saratoga, $105,000, Msw, 7-14, 3yo/up, 1 1/8m, 1:49.71, gd, 6 3/4 lengths.
DREAMLIKE (c, 3, Gun Runner–Time to Tap, by Tapit) began his career Feb. 11 in Hallendale, where he finished second in a mile maiden contest and in a 1 1/16-mile Mar. 11 main track race before shipping north Apr. 8 to Aqueduct to try his hand in the GII Wood Memorial S. Third in that Derby-qualifier with a blanket finish separating him from winner GSW Lord Miles (Curlin) and runner-up GSW Hit Show (Candy Ride {Arg}), he was given a brief freshening before being brought back here at America's summer playground.

Crushed at the windows to the tune of 1-5 favoritism on an overcast afternoon, the chestnut broke well enough to save ground on the first bend in fourth. Settling as the leading flight showed the way, he drafted in the two path behind cover along most of the far turn and was rolling from four wide outside of the quarter pole. Rallying to take the lead as rivals to his inside knocked each other around coming into the homeward drive, he extended his advantage to a comfortable 6 3/4 lengths as Moore's Law (Good Magic) motored in from last to take the minor placing. Mount Craig (Arrogate) gamely overcame the interference to round out the trifecta. An inquiry into that stretch trouble would later disqualify fourth place finisher Hero's Medal (Medaglia d'Oro) to sixth.

Dreamlike claims Australian export MSP Backflash (Medaglia d'Oro) as an elder sister. He's the third winner from three to race and has two full-siblings–a 2-year-old colt Dimatic and a yearling filly. Dam Time to Tap, herself a full to champion 3-year-old filly, GI Kentucky Oaks victress Untapable, had a 2023 Silver State colt. Among her other accomplished siblings hails GISW & MGISP Paddy O'Prado (El Prado {Ire}), and the dams of GSW Majestic Eagle (Medaglia d'Oro) and GISP Red Route One (Gun Runner). This is also the family of that one's full-brother GSP Red Run and at least eighteen other Graded or listed black-type runners. Sales history:  $975,000 Ylg '21 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: GSP, 4-1-2-1, $162,850. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.

Gun Runner To Stand For $65K On Southern Hemisphere Time; Golden Slipper Bonus Offer

Three Chimneys Farm's multiple-leading sire Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) will stand to Southern Hemisphere time and they are offering a AU$500,000 bonus to any progeny that wins the G1 Golden Slipper S., Doug Cauthen, the vice chairman of Three Chimneys Farm, told TTR AusNZ.

The farm's stud fee of $65,000 (AU$98,000) is slightly less than the $75,000 (AU$110,000) he commanded last year on Southern Hemisphere covers. They are hoping to attract anywhere between 20 and 40 Southern Hemisphere mares this spring.

“The goal is to make him appealing,” Cauthen said. “He's consistently bred to Southern Hemisphere time, but last year and this year, we've really tried to open him up more. He's bred a solid book in the past without it being a big book, because we're not looking for a big book. We're looking for quality.”

The American Horse of the Year produced six individual Grade I winners from his first book of 127 foals en route to Champion Northern American first-crop sire honors. He was also the leading sire of 3-year-olds in 2022, which included Echo Zulu, Gunite, Cyberknife and Early Voting.

“He's been spectacular, and everyone here is feeling blessed to have him at Three Chimneys,” Cauthen said. “But we think the potential to continue this, and build on it, is right there in front of him. Who he's as good as, we'll find out in five or 10 years' time, but he's certainly been exceptional so far.”

The AU$500,000 bonus to any progeny of Gun Runner that wins the Golden Slipper S. is also on the table.

“Like the Kentucky Derby or any of these great races, just getting runners in the field is the hardest part,” Cauthen said. “Time will tell but we think it's a legitimate possibility for Gun Runner to get horses into the Slipper, therefore we should offer a legitimate bonus.”

Emirates Park bred its Golden Slipper winner Estijaab (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) to Gun Runner on SH time last year. She's currently heading back Down Under safely in foal to the stallion.
