Friday’s Stronach 5 Features $154,931 Carryover

With a carryover of $154,931.69 in the Stronach 5, Friday's pool is expected to grow in excess of $500,000 while featuring races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields along with an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

The Stronach 5, which continues to show a strong return on investment, will begin Friday at 4:30 p.m. with Laurel's eighth race.

Laurel's eighth race, the first leg of Friday's sequence, brings together a competitive field of 3-year-old fillies in a six-furlong allowance optional claimer. Mens Grille Racing's Pretty Lori makes her second start, first against winners, after winning her debut by 7 ½ lengths back in September for trainer Hamilton Smith. Trainer Brittany Russell will send out Little Huntress, who broke her maiden by 14 in December before finishing eighth in her 3-year-old debut Feb. 20 in the Wide Country Stakes. Sonata Stable's Paradise Song, a daughter of Frosted trained by Michael Trombetta, broke her maiden at second asking Jan. 15. She was a game second at Laurel Feb. 12 behind Liv and Let Liv, a winner of four of her six starts.

The Stronach 5 moves to Gulfstream for the second leg and its eighth race, a wide-open mile claiming event for fillies and mares. Assume Control enters off a two-length victory against similar Feb. 25 while Flashing Diamond looks to be on the pace or close to it coming out of sprints. Interest drops in company and moves to the main track for Dan Hurtak.

Older maiden claimers go 5 ½ furlongs in Laurel's ninth race, the third leg of the Stronach 5 sequence. Thunderinthevalley comes into the race off a third-place finish in the slop Feb. 27 and a second-place finish on a fast track Jan. 23.

The Stronach 5 heads west for the final two legs. Santa Anita's third race, a maiden claimer for 3-year-olds going a mile, has Simmer Down, who has placed in three of his six starts, and Royal Orb, who comes in off a pair of third-place finishes. Trainer Sal Gonzalez will send out Hard Metal, second Feb. 21. Sky Navigator moves back to the main track after a fourth-place finish on the turf Jan. 18.

The Stronach 5 concludes with Golden Gate's third race, a maiden claimer for 3-year-old fillies. Owner-trainer Carlo Vaccarezza drops In the Wind into the claiming event after going 1 ¼ mile on the turf against maiden special weight company at Santa Anita March 12. Trainer Jonathan Wong sends out Malibu Jewel, who gets Lasix for the first time. Gary Barber's Made in Karoo drops in company and goes out for the first time for trainer Steve Miyadi.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Sound Machine Should ‘Be Able To Sustain A Longer Run’ In Saturday’s Hurricane Bertie

If e Five Racing Thoroughbreds' Sound Machine can notch her first graded-stakes success in Saturday's $100,000 Hurricane Bertie (G3) at Gulfstream Park, it will be music to trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.'s ears.

The Hurricane Bertie, a 6 ½-furlong sprint for fillies and mares, headlines a 12-race program that will also include the $75,000 Melody of Colors and the $75,000 Texas Glitter.

Sound Machine has had her moments during her 11-race career, but the multiple graded stakes-placed 4-year-old filly has also hit a few sour notes, including an off-the-board performance behind Pacific Gale in the Jan. 23 Inside Information (G2) at Gulfstream.

The daughter of Into Mischief tuned up for another encounter with the John Kimmel-trained Pacific Gale Sunday with a sharp half-mile workout in 47.05 seconds while working in company with Collaborate, a brilliant maiden winner who is being pointed to the March 27 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farm at Xalapa.

“She had a good work with Collaborate the other day. Going into this race we think we have a chance,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “Obviously, John Kimmel's horse will be the favorite. We're hoping to get her to run a big race. We'd like to get a graded-stakes win out of her. This looks like a good opportunity to get it done.”

Sound Machine is winless in seven starts since capturing the 6 ½-furlong Glitter Woman by 6 ½ lengths in January 2020, but she produced a graded-stakes finish in the Miss Preakness (G3) at Pimlico, where she rallied to third, beaten 1 ½ lengths, after getting bumped at the start. The Florida-bred filly followed up her disappointing effort in the Inside Information with a third-place finish in an optional claiming allowance.

“She's going to have to run the best race of her life, but we feel she can improve,” Joseph said. “She always seems to have a short run in her, and you have to time it well. We did a minor throat procedure after her last start. We hope that helps. If it does help her, I think she'll be able to sustain a longer run.”

Tyler Gaffalione has the return call on the $500,000 yearling purchase.

Tobey Morton's Pacific Gale had gone winless in 17 starts before breaking through with a two-length victory in the Inside Information. During the dry spell, the daughter of Flat Out, was stakes-placed eight times and graded stakes-placed on five occasions, including a second-place finish in the 2019 Hurricane Bertie.

In the Inside Information, the 6-year-old veteran stakes performer made a three-wide rally into the stretch and drew off to score by 2 ¾ lengths.

Junior Alvarado has the mount aboard Pacific Gale.

Saguaro Row, also a 6-year-old veteran stakes mare, is scheduled to make her first start for Greenville Stable and trainer Kent Sweezey in the Hurricane Bertie. The daughter of Union Rags is coming off a third-place finish in the Jan 20 Interborough at Aqueduct.

Magic Cap Stables' Slam Dunk, a Shug McGaughey-trained optional claiming allowance winner at Gulfstream last time out; Lowwood Farm LLC and trainer Fernando Abreu's Royal Meghan, a winner of back-to-back optional claiming allowances; Arindel's Sonar, who defeated Sound Machine in her most recent start; Paradise Farm Corp.'s Cory Gal, who finished second behind Sonar in her last start; and trainer Patrick Biancone and D P Racing LLC's Reluctant Bride, a two-time winner last year who is scheduled to make her 2021 debut; round out the field.

Dual Prep Winner Greatest Honour Tops Nominees To Florida Derby

Courtlandt Farms' Greatest Honour, an impressive winner of the Jan. 30 Holy Bull (G3) and Feb. 27 Fountain of Youth (G2), is atop the list of 25 Triple Crown hopefuls nominated to the $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farm at Xalapa at Gulfstream Park March 27.

Greatest Honour, who also broke his maiden at Gulfstream Dec. 26, is trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, who saddled Orb for victories in the 2013 Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby prior to his triumph in the Kentucky Derby (G1).

The 70th running of the Florida Derby will highlight a program with 10 stakes, six graded, worth $1.85 million in purses. The tradition-rich 1 1/8-mile stakes has produced the winners of 60 Triple Crown events, as well as 24 Kentucky Derby winners, 19 Preakness Stakes (G1) winners and 17 Belmont Stakes (G1) champions. Last year's Florida Derby winner Tiz the Law captured the Belmont.

Greatest Honour has won all three of his starts at Gulfstream over the 1 1/16-mile distance while rallying from well off the pace. The son of Tapit was fourth at the top of the stretch in the Fountain of Youth before surging to a 1 ½-length victory.

A total of 170 Kentucky Derby qualifying points will be up for grabs in the Florida Derby on a 100-40-20-10 basis.

Godolphin LLC's Prevalence is among the most prominent 3-year-olds on the Florida Derby nominations list, having won his only two starts impressively, both at Gulfstream Park. The Brendan Walsh trainee debuted Jan. 23, winning a seven-furlong maiden special weight race by 8 ¼ lengths, handily. The homebred son of Medaglia d'Oro came back to win a mile optional claiming allowance by three lengths March 11. A decision on the Kentucky-bred colt's next start has yet to be announced.

Juddmonte Farms, Inc.'s Mandaloun, the winner of Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds, is nominated to the Florida Derby but is entered in Saturday's Louisiana Derby (G2). John and Diane Franklin's Rombauer, the Michael McCarthy-trained winner of the El Camino Real Derby (G3) at Golden Gate Fields, is also nominated but is not expected to run.

St. Elias Stable's Known Agenda is among the likely starters in this year's Florida Derby, which has been won a record five times by the son of Curlin's trainer, Todd Pletcher. The homebred colt, who finished third in the Remsen (G2) at Aqueduct in his juvenile season finale, rebounded from a fifth-place finish in his 2021 debut in the Sam F. Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs with an eye-catching 11-length victory at Gulfstream in a Feb. 26 optional claiming allowance at the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby distance. Pletcher is also represented on the Florida Derby noms list by WinStar Farm LLC and CHC Inc.'s Sainthood, a Feb. 12 maiden winner at Fair Grounds following a narrow loss his Jan. 9 debut at Gulfstream.

Michael Shanley's Nova Rags, who finished second behind stablemate Candy Man Rocket in the Sam F. Davis, is expected to run in the Florida Derby. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the son of Union Rags had previously won the seven-furlong Pasco at Tampa.

Three Chimneys Farm and eFive Racing Thoroughbreds' Collaborate, a $600,000 yearling purchase, is scheduled to make the jump from the maiden special weight ranks to Grade 1 company after rebounding from a troubled debut to graduate in spectacular fashion Feb. 27, scoring by 12 ½ lengths under wraps. The son of Into Mischief is trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., who is also represented on the nominations list by Moonlite Strike, who finished third in the March 6 Tampa Bay Derby (G2).

Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse is expected to be represented in the Florida Derby field by undefeated Soup and Sandwich, a Live Oak Plantation homebred who debuted at Gulfstream Jan. 29 with a dominating 7 ¼-length victory in a 6 ½-furlong maiden special weight event. The son of Into Mischief came back to capture a two-turn optional claiming allowance at Tampa Bay Downs Feb. 24 by 2 ¾ lengths. Soup and Sandwich will be among the Florida-bred nominees who will be eligible for $100,000 in Florida-bred bonus money.

Magic Stables LLC's Papetu, who finished third in the Fountain of Youth following a very wide trip from his outside post position, is expected to return in the Florida Derby. The Antonio Sano-trained son of Dialed In had previously finished second in the Jan. 2 Mucho Macho Man and fourth in the Holy Bull at Gulfstream. Sano-trained Sigiloso, a son of Khozan owned by Gelfenstein Farm, is also nominated to the Florida Derby. The Florida-bred, who finished third in the Kitten's Joy (G3) on turf two starts back, is eligible for a $100,000 'Win Only' bonus offered to Florida Sire Stakes-nominated horses.

Trainer Dale Romans is represented by four 3-year-olds on the Florida Derby nominations list, including Albaugh Family Stables LLC's Sittin on Go and Smiley Sobotka, West Point Thoroughbreds and Peacock Stable's King's Ovation and Jim Bakke and Gerry Isbister's Ultimate Badger.

The Florida Derby will be supported by an undercard with nine other stakes – $200,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2), $200,000 Pan American (G2), $100,000 Ghostzapper (G3), $100,000 Kitten's Joy Appleton (G3), $100,000 Orchid (G3), the $100,000 Sir Shackleton, $100,000 Sand Springs, the $100,000 Cutler Bay, and $100,000 Sanibel Island.

Canter For The Cause Draws Over 75 Participants To Gulfstream Park

More than 75 equine enthusiasts, many with retired Thoroughbreds, walked, trotted, or cantered their horse across legendary Gulfstream Park Monday morning as part of the second annual Canter for the Cause.

The event attracted riders from throughout Florida, as well as several retired Thoroughbreds with the Davie Police Department's Mounted Patrol Unit and the City of Coral Gables mounted unit.

The event, which ran Monday morning and afternoon for all equine enthusiasts, benefited the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, retire, and rehome Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding, and Florida Thoroughbred Retirement and Adoptive Care (TRAC), an accredited TAA facility.

Canter for the Cause was sponsored by Gulfstream, the Florida Horsemen's Protective and Benevolent Association (FHBPA), Seminole Feed and Purina.

“This is a fun day for us at Gulfstream Park. I guess it's the equivalent of playing softball at Yankee Stadium,” said Aidan Butler, Chief Operating Officer of 1/ST Racing. “It gives us a chance to not only showcase what we do on the track here but showcase what horses do for aftercare. A lot of people don't know this but Thoroughbreds, while born and bred to race, are awesome at all kinds of other disciplines. We have some police horses here, we have a bunch of polo ponies, dressage and show jumpers, and other cool disciplines that racehorses excel at. And with the benefit of Florida TRAC and the TAA, which are the beneficiaries of this charity event, we hope to do even more.”

Katie Schmit, farm manager and trainer at Florida (TRAC), said: “I think it's awesome to do things like this and encourage people to see off the track thoroughbreds. We just need to keep raising awareness of aftercare. We need our focus on what horses are going to do after their racing careers and raising awareness at the track, and involving the horsemen is really special.”

Some of the retired Thoroughbreds returning to the track were Shadow Boxer, who is training for eventing, mounted police horses Tizrobertcharles and Guidoinaspeedo, Sweet Karen Sue, who became a hunter, and Cicerone, who went on to be a jumper.
