TERF Opens Grant Awards Cycle

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) has announced the opening of their 2021 grant awards cycle. TERF aims to support students in pursuit of education in Equine Medicine and to fund research efforts which improve the lives of Thoroughbred horses. Those selected to receive this year's grants will reflect TERF's strategic focus and vision to support and promote equine education and research. Applications will be accepted through Apr. 1 and additional information can be found at www.terfusa.org.

In 2020, TERF awarded $108,000 in grants to nine different organizations. TERF's grants reflect the values set forth by its founders Herb and Ellen Moelis. TERF's current board includes Gretchen and Roy Jackson, the Moelises, Anita Motion, Scott Palmer VMD and Josh Pons, among others.

Second Annual Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit To Be Offered Virtually

The Retired Racehorse Project (RRP), Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), and the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) jointly announce today that the second annual Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit will take place virtually on October 5-6, 2020.

Offering three sessions of panel discussions, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit is geared towards individuals and organizations with a professional interest in the retraining and rehoming of Thoroughbreds after racing. The Summit is a free event but pre-registration is required; sessions will be accessible via Zoom.

”When the decision was made to postpone this year's Thoroughbred Makeover, we wanted to ensure that we still supported our aftercare partners in any way that we could,” said Jen Roytz, executive director of the RRP. “The Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit not only covers topics pertinent to those working in Thoroughbred aftercare, but also provides a unique networking opportunity for participants.”

This year's panel discussions reflect some of the unique challenges facing aftercare organizations as well as for-profit resellers during the global COVID-19 pandemic, with the goal of helping Summit attendees create innovative solutions for everything from fundraising to herd management. “In this especially challenging year, we wanted the focus of the Aftercare Summit to be on fundraising strategies for aftercare organizations,” said Erin Crady, executive director of TCA. “With the cancellation of live events, many organizations have had to revise their fundraising plans to place a larger emphasis on digital fundraising and grant writing.”

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit was first held in 2019 at the Kentucky Horse Park the day before the start of the Retired Racehorse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America. The Thoroughbred Makeover is already the largest gathering of individuals and organizations dedicated to the rehoming and retraining of off-track Thoroughbreds, making it the logical setting for this educational and networking opportunity. The 2020 Summit takes place as part of the RRP's Virtual Makeover Week, which includes other educational opportunities for Thoroughbred lovers.

“In these strange and difficult times, networking and sharing best practices is so important for all of us,” said Stacie Clark, TAA operations consultant. “The TAA is happy to be part of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit alongside the RRP and the TCA.”

EQUUS Foundation Awards Over $500,000 In Grants In 2020

The EQUUS Foundation announced today the award of over $500,000 in grants, including awards of new and gently used riding apparel, valued at $240,000, to individual riders in need, scholastic riding programs, pony clubs, equestrian camp programs and equine charities through The Rider's Closet program.

Primary support is awarded to equine charities nationwide that save and re-home increasing numbers of horses from abuse, neglect, and slaughter and charities that partner with horses to improve the well-being of people through the Foundation's Transparency Awards program. The EQUUS Foundation awarded small grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 to 160 charities that earned the EQUUS Foundation Guardian Seal of Transparency by completing the EQUUS Foundation's comprehensive and unique verification process.

EQUUS Foundation Horse Whisperers are a select group of donors who have an extraordinary kinship with horses. The EQUUS Foundation Board of Directors selects those charities from among the grant recipients that best align with the interests of the Horse Whisperers to be recognized with a Horse Whisperer Award.

Thoroughbred Charities Of America Awards Grants Over $1 Million In 2020

Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) announced Thursday that grants totaling nearly $1,070,000 will be awarded this year.

A record 92 grant applications were received earlier this year during the organization's annual grant cycle. Ultimately, 70 organizations were approved for a grant including 45 aftercare organizations, 16 backstretch and farm worker programs, five equine-assisted therapy organizations, three Thoroughbred incentive programs, and one research organization. Grant recipients from the last three years can be found on tca.org.

In May, TCA's Horses First Fund made emergency grants to three backstretch organizations, seven aftercare organizations, and supported two feed assistance programs across the U.S. to aid in the relief efforts during the Coronavirus pandemic. The total expended from the Horses First Fund was $79,900 bringing the organization's total 2020 grantmaking over the $1 million mark.

“In a year where we've seen a greater need than ever before we are so grateful that we are able to increase our impact among our grantees,” said Erin Crady executive director of TCA. “TCA's investment in our charities helps to make their work with Thoroughbreds, backstretch and farm workers possible.”

TCA's expanded giving in 2020 is bolstered by two bequests received since its last granting cycle. Last fall, a generous gift from the estate of Robert D. Byington of Lansing, Mich. was received. Mr. Byington was an avid horsemen and part owner of 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom. When told about the increased impact of TCA's grants due to Mr. Byington's gift, a family member shared, “I know my uncle is beaming with pride right now.”

A second generous bequest from the estate of Maryland horsemen Bob Manfuso was received this summer. Mr. Manfuso was a founding member of the TCA Board of Directors where he worked closely with TCA founders, Herb and Ellen Moelis and Allaire duPont. Mr. Manfuso served as a director until 2017.

“The contributions from Mr. Byington and Mr. Manfuso were so important and we couldn't have hit the seven-figure impact mark without them,” said Mike McMahon president of TCA. “As a founder and an active board member for nearly 30 years, Bob Manfuso served horses and horse people. He was a great man. Generous with his hard work and financial support right to the end. Likewise, the generosity of Robert Byington has made a deep and lasting impact on TCA and our grant recipient organizations. We are forever grateful. TCA has had a great volunteer board over the years, and our current board is no exception. Our volunteer board members do a great job giving generously of their time, especially during the pandemic. We are so proud to offer the horses and the people that care for them a million dollars in total 2020 grants.”

TCA's annual grants are provided to organizations that successfully meet the criteria set forth in an annual grant application. Grant applications for the 2021 grant cycle will be available in early January.

TCA's mission is to provide a better life for Thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers, by supporting qualified repurposing and retirement organizations and by helping the people who care for them. TCA distributes grants to several categories of Thoroughbred-related nonprofits including rehabilitation, retraining, rehoming and retirement organizations; backstretch and farm employee programs; equine-assisted therapy programs; and research organizations. Since its inception in 1990, TCA has granted over $24 million to more than 200 charities. TCA is the charitable arm of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA).
