2021 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Accreditation Application Now Available

The 2021 application for accreditation by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is now available on OpenWater, a grant application and review platform, and can be accessed by clicking here.

Thoroughbred aftercare nonprofits interested in applying must complete the application by the closing date of April 1 at 6 p.m. EST. Since TAA accreditation is only granted for a specific period of time, organizations with accreditation status ending in 2021 that want to remain accredited need to re-apply.

Accreditation status is determined after a complete review of five areas of an aftercare organization: operations, education, horse health care management, facility standards and services, and adoption policies and protocols. Organizations passing the application review will be subject to site inspections of all facilities housing Thoroughbreds.

Organizations that receive accreditation are eligible to receive financial grants from the TAA, but prior grants awarded are no indication of potential future awards. In 2020 the TAA awarded $3.5 million to accredited organizations as grants earmarked specifically for equine care, totaling more than $20.7 million awarded since 2012.

Any organization interested in applying for TAA accreditation must fulfill the following five minimum requirements:

Organization must have a current status as a 501(c)(3) federal not-for-profit (U.S.) or must be a registered charity within the meaning of the Income Tax Act (Canada).
Organization must have been in operation for at least three years. The TAA will confirm operation information, including with the secretary of state or provincial business registry.
At time of application, organization must either (1) currently exclusively own and provide care for a minimum of five (5) registered Thoroughbreds, or (2) currently exclusively own and provide care for at least 3-4 registered Thoroughbreds AND must have exclusively owned and provided care for at least 10 registered Thoroughbreds over the previous 12 months. Registered Thoroughbreds leased by the organization or owned by third parties at the same facility should not be included.
Organization must have a written euthanasia policy consistent with the American Association of Equine Practitioners.
Organization, or a principal of the organization or individual directly related to the organization, shall not have any current legal proceedings pending against them which adversely impact the aftercare operations, the organization's standards of care, or the 501(c)(3) status of the organization.

$20 To $20,000: Horses And Humans Research Foundation Receives Matching Gift Challenge

The Horses and Humans Research Foundation (HHRF)has received a matching gift challenge of $10,000. To received the matching funds, the organization must raise $10,000 before the end of October to receive the matching $10,000.

HHRF seeks to advance global knowledge of horse-human interactions and their impact on health and wellness through sustained investment in rigorous research. The Ohio-based charity has 100 percent Board participation; they are asking for $20 donations to help them reach their goal.

Donations can be made online or mailed to Horses and Humans Research Foundation, PO Box 23367, Chagrin Falls, OH 44022.

$107,000 Grant For Veteran-Focused Horses Helping Heroes Program

Polk County Conservation is pleased to announce that Jester Park Equestrian Center's (JPEC) Horses Helping Heroes program (H3) was awarded the US Department of Veteran's Affairs Adaptive Sports Program for Disabled Veterans and Disabled Members of the Armed Forces Grant in the amount of $107,000.

The Horses Helping Heroes program is an equine-assisted therapy program facilitated by Jester Park Equestrian Center in partnership with the Veterans Affairs Central Iowa Health Care System. The program's mission is to build a Veteran's confidence through a relationship with the horse by creating opportunities to develop skills that can be used in their daily life.

To date, the program has helped over 300 Veterans from the VA Domiciliary collaborate with horses to identify relationships, practice communication, manage challenges and recognize peace. This grant will help the Horses Helping Heroes program expand to meet the needs of the many Veterans who are outpatients in the region and is designed to address trauma and other mental health needs, including substance abuse, depression and improving family relationships.

VA Recreation Therapist Megan Trimble shared the following statement expressing her excitement. “We are so thankful for being considered and awarded this grant, giving us the opportunity to reach Veterans on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Past participating Veterans have shared a quote we use in the session that sums up the positive impact they have felt; 'There are things that the horse did for me that a human couldn't have done. – Buck Brannaman.' I cannot contain my excitement to be able to expand the JPEC partnership and the H3 program to outpatient Veterans and continue assisting them through an array of mental health challenges! I would like to express an insurmountable amount of thanks to everyone involved within the Horses Helping Heroes Equine Assisted Therapy program, to include Sierra and the whole Jester Park staff, VA staff, and all the volunteers and donors that keep this amazing program running.”

In closing, Equestrian Center Manager Claudia Starr adds, “We are so grateful to everyone who helped us secure this grant. There is nothing more gratifying than knowing the peace that our service men and women find through interacting with horses. Our EAGALA certified professional Sierra Carmichael, along with VA Recreational Therapist Megan Trimble and our equine therapists, are helping Veterans find positive ways to navigate the many challenges they face.”

EQUUS Foundation Awards Over $500,000 In Grants In 2020

The EQUUS Foundation announced today the award of over $500,000 in grants, including awards of new and gently used riding apparel, valued at $240,000, to individual riders in need, scholastic riding programs, pony clubs, equestrian camp programs and equine charities through The Rider's Closet program.

Primary support is awarded to equine charities nationwide that save and re-home increasing numbers of horses from abuse, neglect, and slaughter and charities that partner with horses to improve the well-being of people through the Foundation's Transparency Awards program. The EQUUS Foundation awarded small grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 to 160 charities that earned the EQUUS Foundation Guardian Seal of Transparency by completing the EQUUS Foundation's comprehensive and unique verification process.

EQUUS Foundation Horse Whisperers are a select group of donors who have an extraordinary kinship with horses. The EQUUS Foundation Board of Directors selects those charities from among the grant recipients that best align with the interests of the Horse Whisperers to be recognized with a Horse Whisperer Award.
