Peter Brant's Serve the King and Irad Ortiz, Jr. bided their time in the early going of the GII Red Smith S. and while it appeared they might not make it up in time in Saturday's 11-furlong Big A feature, the English-bred found another gear late to best pacemaker Channel Cat by a neck. The latter, this season's GI Man O' War S. winner and sporting blinkers for the first time, went straight to the front, doling out early fractions of :24.96 and :50.02 with No Word (Silent Name {Jpn}) in pursuit while the 2-1 favorite lingered in a rail-skimming fifth. Still moving easily midpack down the backstretch, the Chad Brown trainee finally came off his inside perch and started to inch forward approaching the quarter pole. Fanned out five wide and with still a handful of rivals in front of him turning for home, the handsome bay appeared to idle for a moment at midstretch but came on in the final strides to eke out the win over the game pacesetter. Soldier Rising closed impressively to finish third over No Word.
“I had a really good trip,” said Ortiz, Jr. “He broke sharp and was forwardly placed. He put me in a good position, so I saved all the ground for the whole race. At the half-mile, I started moving and he responded really well. I was able to tip him out and when he hit the clear, he was running.”
He continued, “He was off the bit sometimes, but that's him. He's not a horse that's going to pull you all the way. That's not him. Sometimes, you have to wake him up and let him know he's running. He's there for you, that's the good thing.”
Serve the King hit the board in four of five starts last season, including a nine-furlong optional claiming win and a runner-up finish in the GIII Monmouth S. in October. Fourth in his first two starts of 2021, including in the 11-furlong GI United Nations S. in July, the 260,000gns Tattersalls October grad appreciated the extra yardage in Saratoga's John's Call S. at 13 furlongs Aug. 25 ahead of a second behind Rockemperor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) in the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S. Oct. 9. “A lot of credit goes to my Monmouth crew, who really did a good job helping this horse,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “As a younger horse, he was a little bit quirky and wouldn't want to train all the time and for whatever reason down there he has a comfortable situation and would train on. That's why he spent a lot of his time down there…After the Hirsch, we left him here and he picked right up and has been cooperative and he's fine now. My crew here did a great job. It was a real team effort from different divisions to keep this guy on track.”

Pedigree Notes:
With his GII Red Smith S. win, Serve the King became the 23rd graded/group winner for his sire and fourth in the U.S., each trained by Chad Brown. He is the second of Kingman's GSWs out of a Galileo, joining G3 Musidora S. victress Nausha (GB). Out of Group 2 placed Fallen In Love (GB), the 5-year-old is a half to French Group 3 scorer Loving Things (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). The 15-year-old mare is also represented by an unraced 3-year-old colt by Siyouni (Fr) and a juvenile colt by Fastnet Rock (Aus). Her latest produce is a weanling filly by Expert Eye (GB).

L’Imperator, En Wye Cee Rematch in Baruch

It's not unusual to see the Saratoga meeting's top two trainer knock heads in graded competition and such is again the case in Monday's GII Bernard Baruch H. Representing 'Team Pletcher' is En Wye Cee (Declaration of War), a winner going nine furlongs in a rained-off optional claimer at this meet in 2020, but winless in two starts since. After rounding out last season with a third behind the Chad Brown-trained pair of Devamani (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Olympico (Fr) (Rajsaman {Fr}), the full-brother to GSW Silentio lacked racing room in early stretch in his latest start in a nine-furlong optional claimer here Aug. 4 and had to settle for third behind the re-opposing L'Imperator (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}).

“He had a tough trip last out, but he's come back well,” Pletcher said. “He had a tough trip in his comeback race but ran well, hopefully he moves forward from having a start.”

Waving the flag for 'Team Brown', L'Imperator annexed a trio of starts in France before resurfacing in the U.S. with Brown for last summer's one-mile GIII Saranac S. Seventh that day, the gelding bounced back to win his latest with Irad Ortiz Jr. Debuting in the irons. The two reunite in this second start of the year.

“He's come back really well. He's a totally different horse and I've been very pleased with him,” said Brown. “It's a little bit of a cutback in distance, that would be the only concern. But we're giving it a shot. I was impressed and he exceed my expectations in his allowance win. Gelding him and giving him the time off have really gotten him over some of his soreness and such. He certainly did a 180.”

Halladay Faces Five In Bernard Baruch

Riding a two-race winning streak, Harrell Ventures’ Halladay (War Front) will try to take it to the next level in Sunday’s GII Bernard Baruch S. at Saratoga. Victorious in Gulfstream’s Tropical Park Derby last December, the grey finished fourth–beaten two lengths–in the GIIII Tampa Bay S. Feb. 8 before returning with a three-length score in a one-mile Gulfstream optional claimer Apr. 4. Most recently, Halladay went gate-to-wire over subsequent GI United Nations winner Aquaphobia (Giant’s Causeway) and stablemate Social Paranoia (Street Boss), who took the GIII Poker S. at Belmont Park two starts later.

“So far, the turf course has not been kind to horses close to the pace,” said trainer Pletcher, who won the Baruch in 2012 with Dominus. “That’s really my only concern. The horse is training super and we’re excited about Sunday. He’s in great form and seems to be steadily improving. Obviously, he took to the turf at Gulfstream quite well so I’m hoping that he can apply that to this turf course.”

Jockey Luis Saez was aboard for Halladay’s two latest winning efforts and retains the mount from post six.

Trainer Chad Brown is represented by a pair of contenders in the 8 1/2 furlong test–the lightly-raced Good Governance (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and graded-stakes winner Olympico (Fr) (Rajsaman {Fr}). Campaigned by Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables, Good Governance broke his maiden last August over the Spa’s inner turf before finishing a close-up second in the GIII Saranac S. Benched for the remainder of the season, the English-bred registered a 3 3/4-length win in a Belmont allowance June 26.

“He’s lightly raced, but he’s very talented,” said Brown. “Hopefully he’s up to the challenge. He has a nice race under his belt and he looks good.”

The bay’s regular pilot, Irad Ortiz, Jr., reuintes with the 4-year-old and will attempt to collect his third Bernard Baruch triumph.

Stablemate Olympico will attempt to record his first win since lighting up the tote board at 18-1 in his North American debut in last year’s GII Fort Marcy S. at Belmont Park. Owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and Wonder Stables, the 5-year-old finished fifth in this race one year ago before finishing runner-up in the GII Knickerbocker S. over the inner turf at Belmont Oct. 14.
