Colonial Downs Dates Approved For 2024

The 27-day live racing season at Colonial Downs for 2024 will be held over nine weeks from Thursday, July 11 through Saturday, Sept. 7 as approved by the Virginia Racing Commission, the track said in a release Wednesday.

Like last season, the New Kent site will race three days per week, Thursday through Saturday.

“The success of the 2023 meet, which brought weekend racing back to Colonial Downs, was a credit to the tremendous support here in Virginia from the owners, trainers, horseplayers, hard-working staff and partners,” said Senior Director of Racing Operations Frank Hopf. “We're excited to build upon the momentum and look forward to a tremendous 2024 season.”

The Festival of Racing including the GI Arlington Million S. is slated for Saturday, Aug. 10. The GIII Virginia Derby will anchor the closing day card on Saturday, Sept. 7. The entire stakes schedule for the 2024 season will be made available in the coming weeks.

The 2023 season offered more than $650,000 per day in purses and boasted an average of 8.19 starters per race. Average daily handle was $2,658,028. Purse money for the 2024 season is expected to be nearly $700,000 per day.

Canadian Champion Langfuhr Passes Away At Lane’s End

Langfuhr, a son of Danzig and a top sprinter of the 1990s, has died at the age of 31 at Lane's End, the farm said in a press release early Thursday morning.

A sire of 75 stakes winners, five champions and progeny earnings of over $119 million, Langfuhr was a member of the Lane's End Farm stallion roster from 2004 to 2018 when he was retired from stud duty at age 26.

Bred and raced by the late Thoroughbred breeder and owner Gustav Schickedanz, Canadian-bred Langfuhr was named champion sprinter of 1996 in Canada and was inducted into that country's hall of fame in 2004. Trained by Mike Keogh, Langfuhr won major American graded stakes including the GI Vosburgh S.,GII Forego H., GI Carter H. and GI Metropolitan H. His career earnings were $698,574.

With strong support from his breeder/owner, the stallion sired multiple Canadian champions and stellar runners. Wando, chief among them, won the 2003 Canadian Triple Crown, was named horse of the year and champion 3-year-old colt in Canada and earned in excess of $2.5 million. His stablemate, Mobil, emerged as a top racehorse the following year and was named champion older horse in Canada at four. Both were conditioned for Schickedanz by Langfuhr's trainer.

Additional top-level racehorses sired by Langfuhr include Jambalaya, multiple Grade I winner and hero of the GI Arlington Million, champion Lawyer Ron, and millionaires Interpatation and Euroears.

“It was a privilege to stand Langfuhr at Lane's End and to have him spend his retirement at the farm,” said Lane's End Farm's Bill Farish. “We are grateful for the many years we had with him. Langfuhr's intelligence and kind temperament will have a lasting impact on all who had the opportunity to work with him.”

Langfuhr will be buried in the stallion cemetery at the farm.

Making Waves: Active Members Only

In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of Activist Investing in a Saratoga race last weekend.

Kingman Colt Doubles Up In New York

The Klaravich Stables/Chad Brown axis combined with Saratoga winner Activist Investing (GB) (Kingman {GB}) on Sunday (video). Already a winner during the Belmont at Aqueduct meet third out last October, the son of Astronomy's Choice (GB) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}) was bred by Robin Geffen.

Joining the Klaravich fold for 220,000gns out of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, the February foal is the second foal and winner for the stakes-placed granddaughter of Platonic (GB) (Zafonic). Since foaling the winner, the relative of the high class Prudenzia (Ire), Magic Wand (Ire), Chicquita (Ire) et al., has delivered a trio of foals by Darley's Too Darn Hot (GB)–the juvenile filly Wolf Alice (GB), and colts in each of the past two years.

One of 30 winners from 55 to race in the U.S. (55%) for Juddmonte's Kingman, Activist Investing's brethren have chalked up 20 stakes wins in that jurisdiction by eight individual stakes winners (18%).

A Soft Touch At Del Mar

Qatar Racing's Gentle (GB) (No Nay Never), making her U.S. debut, graduated in her third start for trainer George Papaprodromou at Del Mar this past weekend (video).

Bred by Ammerland Verwaltung GmbH & Co., she is a one of two winners for her dam, the G3 Prix de Psyche third Light The Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Sold for €200,000 out of the Arqana August Yearling Sale to her owner, Gentle's first two starts were fourth-place efforts over the British all-weather circuit last December and this May. She is a half-sister to 2-year-old filly Light The Moon (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), a yearling filly by Waldgeist (GB), and a weanling filly by Zarak (Fr). Her second dam is the group winner Lady Vettori (GB) (Vettori {Ire}), best known as the dam of G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner-turned star sire Lope De Vega (Ire) (Shamardal).

Coolmore's No Nay Never has sired 38 winners from 74 runners Stateside (51%). A total of nine of those (12%) are stakes winners, with GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine Meditate (Ire) the best of the bunch to date.

Honourable Mentions

Tracy Farmer's Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) earned a new career best with a 3 1/2-length victory in Saturday's GI Beverly D. S. at Colonial Downs (video). The Mark Casse trainee is the first top-level winner for her sire.

Another horse already featured in Making Waves is Juddmonte homebred Set Piece (GB) (Dansili {GB}). One race after Fev Rover starred at Colonial, it was time for the 7-year-old to earn his first Grade I rosette in the Arlington Million for trainer Brad Cox (video).

Veteran Set Piece Conquers Colonial With Arlington Million Score

NEW KENT, VA–Not far from the Colonial Downs racetrack in southeastern Virginia, a sign on the interstate reads, 'Welcome to America's Historic Triangle'. The trio of Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg provide a gateway into American history from a time when the British ruled the American colonies. And while it's been a long time since Great Britain had success in this part of the country, Set Piece (GB) (Dansili {GB}) got them back on the board with a win in the GI Arlington Million.

In Virginia's first rendition of the 'Million', held under a scorching sun in front of the largest crowd ever assembled at Colonial Downs, the Juddmonte horse, under the expert guidance of Florent Geroux, took his time from the gate and eased into stride at the rear of the field. Early leader Strong Quality (Quality Road), with Kentucky Derby and Belmont S. winner Javier Castellano aboard, went out to assume command and had no trouble up front through fractions of :22.96 and :46.67. Set Piece was eased out up the backstretch and into the far turn, had to come widest of the frontrunners to get himself into striking position at the quarter pole, and closed determinedly past Santin (Distorted Humor) to nab the clear win. The final time of 1:58.19 was both a stakes and a track record for the 1 1/4 mile distance.

“You hate to be that far behind,” said Katie Tolbert, assistant to winning trainer Brad Cox. “But when you see fractions like that, and Florent knows him so well, it gives you a little confidence that he's gonna make sure to be there at the end.”

“It was great,” added Florent Geroux. “I thought it was going to be an expected pace and it obviously was not. But up the backside, I could see a lot of horses and how they were going and I thought we were going quick enough.”

Pedigree Note:

English-based Dansili is responsible for 90 graded/group winners across the globe. Set Piece, out of a winning Kingmambo mare, is a half to multiple stakes winner and GSP Alocasia (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in addition to six other winners. This is also the family of G1 Coral-Eclipse S. winner Elmaamul (Diesis {GB}), MG1SW Reams of Verse (Nureyev), MGSW Eagle Poise (Empire Maker), GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf victress Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Portodora is responsible for an unraced 3-year-old filly by Nathaniel (Ire) and last reported a yearling Kingman (GB) filly.
