A Tribute to Pat Smullen From Cancer Trials Ireland

Editor’s note, the following is a letter sent from Cancer Trials Ireland to the family of Pat Smullen, who passed away from pancreatic cancer on Tuesday evening.

To the family of Pat Smullen

It is with a very heavy heart that, on behalf of the staff and members of Cancer Trials Ireland, we put pen to paper in remembrance of our friend, and benefactor, Pat Smullen.

Pat was a friend like no other. Almost a year ago to the day, Pat and his supporters raised a game-changing €2.6m for pancreatic cancer clinical trials. We would like to put this into context for you–just how dramatic and unusual this degree of fundraising is.

Earlier this year, Comic Relief reached out to the entire country and raised almost €6m with the help of a host of celebs across several hours of primetime TV. Pat Smullen and the horse racing community raised almost half that–€2.6m–for pancreatic cancer clinical trials alone. People diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Ireland will feel the benefit of it for years, if not decades, to come.

The low incidence of pancreatic cancer (around 560 people diagnosed in Ireland each year), the fact that it is not usually diagnosed early, and the relative difficulty of treating the disease effectively with the usual tools (chemotherapy; radiotherapy) make for a challenging, sparse research environment. But as a direct result of the funds Pat helped raise, Cancer Trials Ireland received nine research proposals this year. Three studies are now being advanced or explored, one of which will open in Ireland in a matter of weeks.

That is the work Pat has enabled us to do. But that is not all that Pat did for Cancer Trials Ireland. Last November, he helped us to raise more than €120,000 for ovarian and prostate cancer trials. Earlier this year, he gave us the go ahead to fund a Next Generation Sequencing machine (€100,000) for St Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin. This machine will allow doctors to genetically sequence pancreatic cancer tumours, and other tumours, potentially opening up treatment options for thousands of people with all types of cancer. On a more personal level, Pat continually made himself available for interviews, photo calls, and phone calls–anything that might help people in a situation similar to his own.

It is a mark of the man that he had such a wide-ranging generosity. Pat’s popularity–and humility – was and is legendary. It was truly remarkable, and inspiring, to see that these qualities can coexist with the drive and determination it takes to reach the very top of his demanding sport. Our thoughts, today and always, are with the Pat’s wife Frances, his children Hannah, Paddy and Sarah, and his wider family.

Clinical trials offer patients very real, tangible, important benefits–but they can also provide something as vital as it is intangible: Hope. That is Pat’s real gift to the people who come after him, who are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The outpouring of love and support his efforts have generated give hope to us all.

Thank you, Pat.

Eibhlín Mulroe, CEO & Prof Ray McDermott, Clinical Lead, Cancer Trials Ireland – on behalf of staff

Saratoga Face Mask Campaign Raises $20K

Officials at the New York Racing Association (NYRA) presented a check in the amount of $20,000 to a handful of non-profit organizations, the result of a joint undertaking with the City of Saratoga Springs to raise funds via the sale of limited-edition Saratoga face masks.

The campaign was launched in mid-June and reportedly met with a great deal of interest in the public. The funds will be distributed evenly between AIM Services, Inc.; Franklin Community Center; Shelters of Saratoga and the SNACpack Program (Saratoga Nutrition Assistance for Children). A portion of the net proceeds from the sale of the masks was donated to the non-profits.

“It was great to see this level of support for a campaign that not only serves as a unique sign of the times, but benefits the collective health of the Saratoga community in so many ways,” said NYRA President & CEO Dave O’Rourke. “We thank our fans for their enthusiasm surrounding the face masks, as well as Mayor Kelly and the City of Saratoga Springs for their continued partnership and leadership.”

Added Saratoga Springs Mayor Meg Kelly: “We are all grateful to NYRA and the Saratoga mask initiative for helping us ‘Mask Up’ and raise funds for four of our local non-profits. NYRA has demonstrated once again their commitment to the safety and well-being of our entire community. When we get through this, we will be able to look back with pride on the many ways the community pulled together. NYRA’s example is just one of many that make Saratoga Springs such a special place to live, work and visit.”

A limited number of three-pack set of Saratoga face masks remain available for purchase for $24.95 at Shop.NYRA.com.

Brooke USA Funds Equine Organizations With Micro-grants During Pandemic

The Board of Directors of Brooke USA has approved $32,500, to date, in micro-grants for 20 equine organizations in distress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fund disbursements were made from Brooke USA's COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund which was designed to address the need for financial aid across the globe due to the pandemic. In response to the spread of the coronavirus, Brooke USA is committed to meeting the needs of equine-dependent communities impacted by the pandemic both in the United States and abroad.

Brooke USA recognizes that in the developing world there is a lack of health care facilities, medical supplies are not readily available, and living in highly crowded communal situations exacerbates the risk of spread. Moreover, the international community which normally offers aid is hard pressed to help because every nation is dealing with their own problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At Brooke USA we know that when equine owners suffer, so do their animals thus, it is imperative that we do what we can to help right now. We are uniquely positioned to provide aid where the need is greatest. And, it is our hope that equine-friendly businesses, individuals and philanthropists will continue to support us in this fight against this virus which is taking a toll on all of us,” said Emily Dulin, Brooke USA's Chief Executive Officer.

The funds raised are used to support response and recovery efforts which vary from nation to nation, and community to community. Brooke USA understands that needs in each area are individual. In some communities, this may mean providing care for working animals whose owners have been impacted by the pandemic. In others, it may involve providing horse feed to a family who can no longer work due illness or economic distress.

Following is the list of organizations funded to date:

  • Arabian Rescue Mission
  • Brooke Latin America & Caribbean
  • Carolina Equine Rescue & Assistance
  • Equestrian Aid Foundation
  • Equitarian Initiative
  • Equus Foundation
  • February Star Sanctuary
