Estate Of Joyce And Paul Robsham Donate $500,000 To New Vocations Endowment Fund

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program announced today that the estate of Joyce and Paul Robsham made a $500,000 contribution to the program's endowment fund. The Robshams were two of New Vocations' founding supporters and instrumental in creating the endowment fund in 2005.

“Joyce and Paul loved horses and the sport,” said Patricia Davis, executor and trustee of the Robsham Estate. “They firmly believed that breeders and owners were ultimately responsible for their horses' welfare, and they were adamant that their horses retire from the track before injury to ensure a successful second career. Dot Morgan's integrity and passion for New Vocations impressed Paul so much that he had no doubt in its future growth and long-term sustainability.”

“Paul was a visionary,” said New Vocations Executive Director Dot Morgan. “He saw the need for racehorse aftercare options long before it was recognized by the industry. He had a vision of New Vocations growing into a first-class charity that would serve racing nationally into perpetuity. The Robshams' vision and commitment to racehorse aftercare is truly a gift that will ultimately provide sustainability to our program allowing us to serve more horses in the years to come.”

The donation comes during challenging times when all the program's live fundraising events were cancelled due to COVID-19 and several grants were decreased. At the same time, the nonprofit served more than 600 horses—a record number—in 2020.

Irish Stars Support CHI Foundation In Honor of Pat Smullen

In memory of the late champion jockey Pat Smullen, Irish racing stars have pledged their support in the fundraising efforts of the Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin, which aims to purchase a spinal cell saver auto transfusion device for the children’s hospital, CHI at Crumlin. In the coming weeks, jockeys and racing personalities will call on racing and sports fans for donations towards the essential blood transfusion equipment.

John Butler, Jockeys’ Sports Physiotherapist and Paul Quish, Racecourse Announcer, who spearheaded the campaign in 2019, both agreed: “Despite the COVID-19 restrictions, everyone in racing is more determined than ever to continue the much-needed fundraising for Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin. Our former colleague Pat Smullen was inspirational in his support for our project last year and we have dedicated this year’s effort to his memory. We are all focused on raising the funds to buy the spinal cell saver auto transfusion, an essential piece of equipment that CHI at Crumlin specifically identified to provide children all over Ireland with life-changing treatment. Any donations, big or small will be really appreciated.”

Additionally, Irish racecourses around the country will name a race to promote the fundraising initiative–‘Irish Racing Industry Fundraiser for Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin in memory of Pat Smullen.’

Central Kentucky Riding For Hope To Host Virtual Gala On Saturday, Oct. 24

Central Kentucky Riding for Hope (CKRH), a nonprofit organization that provides equine assisted therapies and activities to more than 300 individuals with disabilities each year, is hosting a virtual gala called “Saddle Up For Hope” on Saturday, Oct. 24.

The live stream broadcast will begin at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on SaddleUp2020.givesmart.com. The event will include both silent & live auctions, a raffle drawing, riding demonstrations by CKRH's young equestrians and a simulated horse auction to sponsor eight equine therapy teams for the coming year.

More than 250 items are available for purchase from such auction categories as artwork, children's, jewelry, home décor, collector's specials and more. Notable items include:

24 halters from leading Thoroughbred racehorses & stallions, such as American Pharoah, Justify, Curlin, California Chrome and Constitution.
A raffle drawing for a 23-year old bottle of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon.
A one-way equine transportation flight within the domestic US.
A handmade dulcimer by international artist Warren May.

Second Annual Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit To Be Offered Virtually

The Retired Racehorse Project (RRP), Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), and the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) jointly announce today that the second annual Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit will take place virtually on October 5-6, 2020.

Offering three sessions of panel discussions, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit is geared towards individuals and organizations with a professional interest in the retraining and rehoming of Thoroughbreds after racing. The Summit is a free event but pre-registration is required; sessions will be accessible via Zoom.

”When the decision was made to postpone this year's Thoroughbred Makeover, we wanted to ensure that we still supported our aftercare partners in any way that we could,” said Jen Roytz, executive director of the RRP. “The Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit not only covers topics pertinent to those working in Thoroughbred aftercare, but also provides a unique networking opportunity for participants.”

The Summit will offer the following three sessions:

This year's panel discussions reflect some of the unique challenges facing aftercare organizations as well as for-profit resellers during the global COVID-19 pandemic, with the goal of helping Summit attendees create innovative solutions for everything from fundraising to herd management. “In this especially challenging year, we wanted the focus of the Aftercare Summit to be on fundraising strategies for aftercare organizations,” said Erin Crady, executive director of TCA. “With the cancellation of live events, many organizations have had to revise their fundraising plans to place a larger emphasis on digital fundraising and grant writing.”

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit was first held in 2019 at the Kentucky Horse Park the day before the start of the Retired Racehorse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America. The Thoroughbred Makeover is already the largest gathering of individuals and organizations dedicated to the rehoming and retraining of off-track Thoroughbreds, making it the logical setting for this educational and networking opportunity. The 2020 Summit takes place as part of the RRP's Virtual Makeover Week, which includes other educational opportunities for Thoroughbred lovers.

“In these strange and difficult times, networking and sharing best practices is so important for all of us,” said Stacie Clark, TAA operations consultant. “The TAA is happy to be part of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit alongside the RRP and the TCA.”
