Jockeys & Jeans Fundraiser at Churchill Downs Canceled

Jockeys and Jeans announced the cancellation of the fundraiser for Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund scheduled for Nov. 14 at Churchill Downs.

“It’s sad because the needs of former jockeys who suffered career ending injuries go on, but given the need to battle this deadly disease, it is necessary,” said Jockeys and Jeans President, Barry Pearl.

Added Churchill’s Executive Director of Racing Mike Ziegler, “Due to the nature of Jockey and Jeans and the way it brings people together from all over the country, we want to ensure that it can be held at Churchill Downs when it can be the biggest and best! We are saddened to postpone the 2020 event, but in full agreement with PDJF and Jockey and Jeans’ choice.”

The event typically attracts 15 or more jockey Hall of Fame members who gather to honor the six permanently disabled former jockeys who attend. Jockeys and Jeans was founded in late 2014 by a group of former jockeys, which has raised over $1.5 million for the PDJF through six annual events and several stallion season sales.

The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund pays a $1,000 monthly stipend to some 60 former jockeys who suffered catastrophic racing injures. Some 40 are either pari or quadriplegics, while some of the others suffered severe brain injuries.

The Belmont Child Care Association, Inc. (BCCA) will host its annual fundraiser online this summer during the week-long “Racing for the Children” virtual party beginning on Monday, August 3 at 12 p.m. through Sunday, August 9.

The virtual format, which serves as a temporary substitute for the BCCA's annual dinner, will be hosted online at BelmontChildCare.org. “We invite you to join us and think big for BCCA,” said BCCA President Libby Imperio. “A gift of any size makes a difference in a child's life and when we come together, we can make a great impact.”

The premium auction will feature a number of unique items, including: a Clubhouse box for the 2021 Runhappy Travers at Saratoga Race Course; a Clubhouse box for the 2021 Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park; a customized jockey statue and quarter mile post; equine care from Rood and Riddle; and services from Brook Ledge Horse Transportation.

TRF to Host BBQ at the Barn Fundraiser

The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) will host a re-imagined “TRF BBQ at the Barn” summer fundraiser on Tuesday, Aug. 11 from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Saratoga Winery.

This year’s BBQ will be carry-out with a twist. Guests will drive thru the grounds to enjoy a “TRF Experience” with miniature ponies, racing celebrities, goodies for the kids, and a special appearance by Joey, the TRF Herd Ambassador, who will be returning to Saratoga from the TRF Second Chances Program at Wallkill.

The event will feature food from Barnsider BBQ in Lake George; a TRF Specialty cocktail created by the Winery; and locally made pies from Mourningkill Bake Shop. Items will be individually ordered online for carryout. Proceeds from the event will benefit the hundreds of TRF horses in the organization’s national herd.

“We are thrilled to be able to welcome back the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation for their summer fundraiser this year,” Amy Greth, Event Director at The Saratoga Winery, said. “Last year’s BBQ was a great success for the foundation and we are honored they chose us to host again. It has been very exciting working with TRF over the past few months to come up with creative ways to keep the momentum going. We look forward to hosting this event to benefit retired racehorses.”

Tickets and donation options available by visiting the TRF website at https://www.trfinc.org/event/bbq-at-the-barn-2020/.
