MORE MOONSHINE TAKES ON WINNERS

4th-SAR, $103K, Alw, 3yo/up, f, 1 1/8m, 2:49p.m.

Summer Wind homebred MORE MOONSHINE (Malibu Moon) looks to make good on her 'TDN Rising Star' debut while trying two turns for the first time here. Making her first trip to the post in a seven-panel event in the mud at this oval July 18, the dark bay rallied five-wide to post a powerful victory, earning her diploma by 6 1/2 lengths and an 86 Beyer Speed Figure. More Moonshine is a full-sister to MGISW Moonshine Memories; SW & GSP Indian Evening (Indian Charlie); and SP Mo for the Money (Uncle Mo). Her dam Unenchanted Evening (Unbridled's Song) is a half-sister to Horse of the Year Favorite Trick (Phone Trick). TJCIS PPs

MOTT UNVEILS WELL-BRED FROSTED FILLY

5th-SAR, $100K, Msw, 3yo/up, f, 6 1/2f, 3:21p.m.

When Summer Wind Equine is listed as breeder, you know you are looking at a horse with a big pedigree and first time starter SILVER STRAND (Frosted) is no exception. Jeff Drown went to $575,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale to acquire the gray filly and her breeder, Summer Wind's Jane Lyon, stayed in for a piece. She is a daughter of the talented MGSW India (Hennessy), who has also produced Japanese MG1SW Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}) and SW Kareena (Medaglia d'Oro). India is out of Summer Wind matriarch, SW & GSP Misty Hour (Miswaki), who is also the dam of SW Pilfer (Deputy Minister), who in turn produced MGISW To Honor and Serve (Bernardini); GISW Angela Renee (Bernardini); and SW & GISP Elnaawi (Street Sense). Siblings of Successful Saratoga Grads on Offer at Fasig

There have been several horses over the past 100 years of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale to summon big price tags, eclipsing the $500,000 mark, in the Humphrey S. Finney pavilion and then go on to be quite successful on the racetrack. The siblings of four such Thoroughbreds are part of the catalogue for the famed auction's centennial edition to be held at the Spa Aug. 9-10.

The 2017 GI Belmont S. winner Tapwrit (Tapit) summoned $1.2-million at the Saratoga Sale back in 2015 from a partnership comprised of Bridlewood Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbreds and Robert LaPenta. Prior to the Belmont, the gray captured the GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby and retired with a record of 13-4-1-1 and earnings of $1,362,402. He retired to stud at Gainesway and is represented by his first yearlings this season.

Tapwrit's Grade I-winning dam Appealing Zophie (Successful Appeal) is also the dam of MGSW & GISP Ride a Comet (Candy Ride {Arg}) and SW Inject (Frosted). Barronstown Stud purchased the mare for $1.2 million carrying a foal by Tapit at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Appealing Zophie's most recent foal is a colt by Justify, who is offered as Hip 41 with Eaton Sales.

“He is beautiful. What I have found pretty unique about him is he has a great, long, well-angled shoulder and incredible depth up front, much like his brother,” said Eaton's Reiley McDonald. “The mare is by a really underrated broodmare sire in Successful Appeal. She has been outstanding with a very limited pedigree, but she could run herself. She has two graded stakes winners, including a Belmont Classic winner. When I looked at this one on the farm back in April, I wrote down two things: an A and Saratoga.”

MGSW Travel Column (Frosted) sold at the most recent edition of the Saratoga Sale in 2019, bringing $850,000 from OXO Equine's Larry Best. She justified her price tag pretty quickly, earning the 'TDN Rising Star' moniker for her impressive debut win at Churchill in September and was third in the GI Darley Alcibiades S. next out. Closing 2020 with a win in the GII Golden Rod S., the gray was second in the GII Rachel Alexandra S. in February and won the GII Twinspires.com Fair Grounds Oaks in March. She was fifth in both the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks Apr. 30 and the GI Acorn S. June 5.

Fasig-Tipton's Bayne Welker and his wife Christina purchased Travel Column's MSW dam Swingit (Victory Gallop)–who is also responsible for MGISP Neolithic (Harlan's Holiday)–for $50,000 in foal to Bodemeister at the 2016 KEENOV sale. The resulting colt brought $310,000 from LaPenta's Whitehorse Stables at the Humphrey S. Finney pavilion in 2018.

Travel Column summoned almost three-times that the following year in Saratoga and her year-younger brother would have eclipsed that number if the 2020 renewal of the sale had not been canceled due to COVID-19. The son of American Pharoah, now named Corton Charlemagne, was re-routed to Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase–a combination of the Saratoga, New York-Bred and July Sales held in Lexington in September–where he sold for $1.25 million to Speedway Stables. Swingit's 2020 colt from the first crop of City of Light will be the second-to-last horse through the ring in Saratoga this year as Hip 209.

“This colt is a very typical Swingit in that we think he is a pretty special horse,” said Conrad Bandoroff of Denali Stud, which consigns the colt. “Bayne and Chris Welker, who are two very high-caliber horsemen, think he is the best foal Swingit has given them. That is pretty high praise and I would have a hard time arguing with them. He is just a very forward, very attractive, well-balanced, strong individual. Corton Charlemagne, the horse we sold for $1.25 million at the Fasig-Tipton Yearling Showcase [in September], was a May foal. This colt is a little more progressive and forward-looking than he was.”

He continued, “Obviously, Travel Column was a great success. By a freshman sire in Frosted, she sold for $850,000 at Saratoga two years ago. There is a little bit more to this colt in terms of substance and strength, but he has that fluid walk and athleticism Travel Column had. What was great about her whole story was there were people shopping the sale, who, before the sale, said they were looking for colts by proven stallions, but every time they came by the consignment, they kept seeing this gray filly and fell in love. That is what happened with Larry [Best]. We are thrilled that it worked out and we are hoping this colt is going to come up here and continue Swingit's Saratoga success. We sold Travel Column up here. We sold a Bodemeister very well up here, and, had there been a Saratoga Sale up here last year, the American Pharoah would have come up here and been the sale-topping colt.”

Four Wheel Drive, a colt from the initial crop of Triple Crown hero American Pharoah, proved quite popular at the 2018 edition of the Saratoga Sale, bringing $525,000 from pinhookers Randy Hartley and Dean DeRenzo, who were acting on behalf of Breeze Easy. He RNA'd for $825,000 the following March at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale, but made up for it on the racetrack. Opening his account with a win in the Rosie's S. at Colonial Downs, the bay followed suit with a victory in Belmont's GIII Futurity S. and won the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint S. to take his juvenile record to three-for-three.

His stakes-winning dam Funfair (More Than Ready), a 'TDN Rising Star', did not produce foals in 2018 or 2019, but her 2020 foal, a full-sister to Four Wheel Drive, is Hip 102. She sells under the same Paramount Sales banner that her brother did.

“We are very pleased to have the full-sibling to BC Juvenile Turf Sprint and Futurity S. winner Four Wheel Drive,” said Paramount's Lesley Campion. “She is from an incredibly fast family with two siblings having set new course records [Four Wheel Drive and Born Great (Scat Daddy)], the family is hugely precocious and this filly looks to have that same physical forwardness to her. Four Wheel Drive got that clever name when Dean DeRenzo commented, here at the Saratoga sale, on his walk being like a four wheel drive, powerful action from each limb, and his sister shows the same. She has quality, strength and balance, coupled with a cool head, a filly anyone would love to add to their stable.”

While 'TDN Rising Star' Flightline (Tapit) has not won a stake yet, most people would agree it's only a matter of time. Purchased by West Point Thoroughbreds for $1 million at the 2019 Saratoga Sale, the bay has made just one start so far, but he made it count, romping by 13 1/4 lengths and stopping the clock for six furlongs in 1:08.75 at Santa Anita in April. Trained by John Sadler, the bay races under a partnership that, in addition to West Point, includes Hronis Racing, Siena Farm and breeder Summer Wind Equine.

Summer Wind owner Jane Lyon purchased Flightline's Grade III-winning and MGISP dam Feathered (Indian Charlie) for $2.35 million in foal to War Front at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale. Flightline is her second foal and second winner from two foals of racing age. Her fourth foal is Flightline's yearling full-brother, who is Hip 92 in the Lane's End consignment.

“This colt is very well put together,” Lyon said. “I think he is stockier and has a little more bone than Flightline had. We are hopeful that the buyers will like him for his own physicality and will appreciate that the mare if capable of producing a runner.”

The 100th edition of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale gets underway Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Godolphin’s ‘Blue Sky’ Sophs at F-T July HORA

The Godolphin racing team has been the envy of many so far in 2021, headed by reigning juvenile champion Essential Quality (Tapit), who took the GI Belmont S. last month. And while the organization can usually be counted on to turn out top-tier performers year after year, some of the hopefuls don't quite make it to the highest levels. As is generally the case with many of the largest players on the racing scene, decisions must be made and as a result, the racing division pared down. Case in point, 10 prospects previously raced by the operation have been earmarked for Monday's Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale in Lexington.

“A new wave of 100 2-year-olds recently joined their program,” explained Brookdale's Joe Seitz, consignor of the Godolphin draft of horses. “They have also retained more horses over the past few years than they normally have. At this time of year, it is ideal for them to make some decisions, because if they're not going to be top-end stakes horses, then they can be very useful for someone else. They have no problem with these horses going on to be successful racehorses for somebody else. They have very high parameters that they need to meet for their stable and this is an ideal time to thin out some numbers. These horses are very useful quality horses that some people are going to have fun with.”

And while no stranger to the July sale's HORA session, Godolphin is tweaking the product on offer for the 2021 renewal.

“They sold some last year at this sale, but those were mostly older horses,” Seitz said. “This year, they are offering 3-year-olds which is a nice addition, because these horses that have plenty of conditions left and a lot of 'blue sky' in front of them.”

Heading the group is Cave Hill (Frosted), winner of Turfway's Rushaway S. Mar. 27. A winner on all three racing surfaces, Hip 613 broke his maiden going a mile in the Indiana slop last October before adding a victory in a Tampa optional claimer on the sod in December. This season, the Brendan Walsh trainee hit the board in half of his starts, including a third in the Dania Beach S. at Gulfstream in January.

“He's been training really well,” affirmed Seitz. “He is definitely a listed caliber individual.”

A half-brother to dual Grade II scorer Skylighter (Sky Mesa), the gelding is a grandson of the Grade I-winning mare, Nastique (Naskra). He is from the first crop of Godolphin's GI Whitney winner Frosted (Tapit).

“What buyer wouldn't want to have a three-weapon arsenal,” said Seitz, explaining the allure of the gelding's ability dirt, turf and all-weather. “You can take him north, you can take him south, you can really run him just about anywhere you like.”

Hailing from the same family is Hip 648, a winning son of Ghostzapper named Ghostlighter. Out of the aforementioned Skylighter, the half-brother to graded-placed Sky Painter (Street Cry {Ire}) is the winner of two career starts, including the most recent registered going a mile at Indiana in April. In his latest start, he finished runner-up in a main track Arlington optional claimer July 4.

The page doesn't get much better than that of Tapwood, cataloged as Hip 564. By leading sire Tapit, the sophomore is out of dual Grade I-winning Better Lucky (Ghostzapper), who is a granddaughter of GI Breeders' Cup Sprint heroine Desert Stormer (Storm Cat). Stakes placed in Monmouth's Sapling S. at two, the gelding broke through for Mike Stidham a Tampa in January before hitting the board in three of his next four starts, including the most recent a second-place effort in a Delaware allowance June 24.

“He is a very good-looking son of Tapit who was second in his two latest starts,” he said. “He is a maiden winner, so he still has all his conditions and we think he's sitting on a win.”

Also sporting upside is National Road (Quality Road), a half-brother to a trio of stakes performing siblings, including German listed winner Clear Water (Hard Spun). Cataloged as Hip 526, the son of Storm Lily (Storm Cat) was second going 8 1/2 furlongs over the Churchill turf June 13 before finishing third at Ellis June 27.

“He was a 'top 15 horse' among [Godolphin's] 2-year-old class last year coming out of their leg-up farm,” offered Seitz. “The horse has a lot of ability. He's been competitive on the Kentucky circuit, so there is a lot of potential there. This could be a good opportunity for someone to have some fun with especially with all the KTDF money available right now because he's Kentucky bred. And he has all his conditions.”

Representing one of the leading stallions in the nation, Hip 598, Atone (Into Mischief), annexed a trio of races in 2020 before finishing seventh in the GIII Tampa Bay S. in February. Gelded thereafter, he finished third in his two most recent starts an Arlington optional claimer June 19.

With already a win under his belt this season, Commandeer (Street Boss) hit the board in four of five starts in 2021, including a victory for trainer Eoin Harty at Tampa in April. Hip 619, who  is out of Gozlan (Tiznow), a full-sister to dual Grade II winner and Grade I placed Tizaqueena, finished third on Arlington's all-weather last weekend.

Summarizing his overall assessment of the consignment's physical appeal as a whole, Seitz said, “These horses have been in the best of hands and have sensational pedigrees. Think of the broodmare band they are coming out of. And all of the horses really look the part, they really do. I know it sounds like a party line, but physically any one of them would knock your socks off. Each one is prettier than the next.”

Australasia Puts Undefeated Record On The Line In Saturday’s Victory Ride

Trainer Brad Cox will send out a pair of contenders entering off last-out stakes wins, as Australasia and Inject will compete as part of an eight-horse field of sophomore fillies in Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Victory Ride at 6 1/2 furlongs on the Belmont Park main track.

The 19th edition of the Victory Ride is one of three stakes on the final Saturday of the Belmont spring/summer meet, bolstering a pair of Grade 1 turf contests going 1 1/4-miles, with the $1 million Belmont Derby Invitational for 3-year-olds and the $700,000 Belmont Oaks Invitational for 3-year-old fillies. Both of those contests are the first legs of NYRA's Turf Triple series for sophomores.

Magnifico Stable's Australasia brings an undefeated record through six starts into her graded stakes debut. The Sky Kingdom filly took to Belmont's Big Sandy in her first appearance over the track, besting fellow Victory Ride-rival Bella Sofia by one length in the six-furlong Jersey Girl on June 6, earning a personal-best 92 Beyer Speed Figure.

The Louisiana-bred won her only start of her juvenile year in November at Fair Grounds and is 5-for-5 this year at four tracks, racking up restricted stakes scores in the Louisiana Jewel and the LA Bred Premier Starlet at Delta Downs before winning the Crescent City Oaks at Fair Grounds. A win against open allowance company in April at Churchill Downs set up her successful effort at Belmont. Since the Jersey Girl victory, Australasia has continued to train at the Elmont-based track, breezing four furlongs in 48.63 seconds on Monday.

Joel Rosario will have the call from post 7.

Her stablemate, Louis Wright's Inject, has won her last two starts, including her first stakes triumph with a 5 1/4-length blowout in the six-furlong Goldfinch on May 15 at Prairie Meadows. The daughter of Frosted was a $390,000 purchase at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and has started her career with a 3-2-1 ledger through her first eight starts.
Tyler Gaffalione will ride from post 2.

Live Oak Plantation's Souper Sensational will be competing against graded stakes company for a fourth consecutive race. Trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, Souper Sensational went 2-for-2 as a juvenile at Woodbine, including a four-length score in the seven-furlong Glorious Song on the all-weather track.

Since then, Souper Sensational earned black type twice as a sophomore, finishing second in the Silvebulletday in January at Fair Grounds and third in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks in March.

Last out, Souper Sensational, with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez aboard, ran fourth in the Grade 2 Eight Belles going seven furlongs on April 30 at Churchill Downs.

“She's doing very well and Johnny rode her last time for us and kind of got hung up a little bit, but she hung in and ran well,” Casse said. “She's coming into the race well and should run well. I don't think the distance this time will be a problem.”

Flavien Prat will pick up the mount from post 5.

Team D and Madaket Stables' Miss Brazil ran third as the mutuel favorite in the Jersey Girl, just one length back to Australasia and will step up to graded stakes company for the first time after earning Beyers of 90 or better in four of her six starts for trainer Tony Dutrow.

The daughter of Palace Malice bested optional claimers on April 23 at Belmont in her last start at the Victory Ride distance and will have the services of Jose Ortiz from post 3.

“She seems to be doing very well coming into the race and we're very happy with her,” Dutrow said. “The Jersey Girl didn't go perfect for us, but that's just a day in the office. She came out of it well and she's training well for the Victory Ride. Anywhere from six furlongs to a mile, I don't think it really matters to her.”

The runner up in the Jersey Girl, Bella Sofia, will be making her third career start. The Rudy Rodriguez trainee coasted to an 11 1/4-length debut win on May 6 and was moved up in class exactly one month later where she finished one length behind Australasia and edged Miss Brazil by a head for second.

Owned by Michael Imperio and Vincent Scuderi, Bella Sofia is a daughter of Awesome Patriot. After working four furlongs in 49.43 seconds on Sunday over Belmont's training track, she will now break from the inside post with Manny Franco set to ride.

“She breezed Sunday on the training track and it was nice and solid,” Rodriguez said. “The horses in the field are already seasoned, but she did good against them last time. The last race was very good for her. She has decent ability, so hopefully we can get lucky.”

Douglas Scharbauer's Red Ghost has won three of her four starts, including two in a row following her victory by a nose over next-out allowance winner Euphoric in the Grade 3 Miss Preakness on May 14. The Ghostzapper filly who began her career with an off-the-turf 8 1/2-length score in August at Saratoga for trainer Wesley Ward, will return to New York for the first time since that effort, breaking from post 6 with Hall of Famer John Velazquez aboard.

Rounding out the field is Kinsman Stable's Shop Girl, second in the Any Limit in March last out for trainer Christophe Clement at Gulfstream Park [outermost post 8, Hall of Famer Javier Castellano]; and Brittlyn Stable's Ova Charged, making her first stakes race after starting 2-for-2 for trainer Jose Camejo [post 4, Luis Saez].

The Victory Ride is slated as Race 8 on Saturday's 11-race card. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern.
