Twilight Gleaming A Stakes First For National Defense at Deauville

Stonestreet Stables LLC's 2-year-old filly Twilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {GB}) gained recompense for a defeat in Royal Ascot's G2 Queen Mary S. with a first black-type success in Saturday's Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge at Deauville, becoming the first black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Twilight Gleaming bettered an Apr. 8 debut second over 4 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland with a 'TDN Rising Star' performance in a May 9 maiden special weight when upped to five furlongs at Belmont and went postward for this retrieval mission coming back off a runner-up finish in the June 16 G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot. In command throughout this straight dash, the 7-10 favourite was shaken up with 350 metres remaining and ridden out inside the final furlong to withstand the late threat of G3 Princess Margaret S. third Delmona by a neck for a first black-type triumph.

Twilight Gleaming becomes the first black-type scorer for her freshman sire (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and for her dam Thames Pageant (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Thames Pageant, who has a yearling colt by Sioux Nation to come, is a full-sister to G1 Winx S. second Mainstream (GB) out of Listed Eternal S. and Listed October S. winner Golden Stream (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). Team Racehorse Lotto Moves To Top Of Racing League

Team Racehorse Lotto has risen to the top of the Racing League ranks after racking up a handful of placed efforts during the league's second card at Doncaster on Thursday evening. Team Newmarket Red, which held the lead after last week's opening meeting of the league at Newcastle, dropped to seventh but remains joint favourite with Racehorse Lotto, which won one race at Newcastle, to take the competition at 5-1 with Betfair. Team Racehorse Lotto holds a narrow three-point lead over Team BullionVault, with Josephine Gordon riding a winner for that team on Thursday. Martin Dwyer rode a double for Team ODDSbible, and there were two victories for Team Ireland, leaving them third and eighth, respectively, of the 12 teams.

Frankie Dettori rode three horses for Newmarket Red on Thursday evening, and although a third was his best finish he was complimentary of the new concept.

“The initiative and idea for the William Hill Racing League came along two or three years ago and when they approached me to take part I thought it was a good idea,” he said. “It's something different that will hopefully attract younger audiences, especially with the team concept. It's started off well and looks to already be a success.

“It's six Thursdays, 36 races, so it's dead easy to understand, it's in the summer months, people can come out and enjoy themselves and take an interest in the Racing League teams. The prize-money is great and I think it is great idea.”

Betfair Spokesman Barry Orr said, “There was some great racing in Doncaster and the competitiveness of the League is reflected in the betting. Newmarket Red still head the market but are out to 5-1 from 9-4, with Team Racehorse Lotto the big movers, going from 12-1 to 5-1 joint-favourite with Newmarket Red. Team ODDSBible have also attracted plenty of support and are now 7-1 from 16-1.”

Golden Pal Confirmed For Nunthorpe

Trainer Wesley Ward reports star sprinter Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) to be firing on all cylinders ahead of an intended tilt at the G1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe S. at York Aug. 20.

Last season's GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner made a spectacular return to action in the GIII Quick Call S. at Saratoga last month and Ward has now given the green light to a trip to the Knavesmire, with Frankie Dettori in line for the ride.

Ward told PA Sport: “He had an unbelievable breeze on Saturday at Arlington Park (4f on soft turf in :51.80) and we're headed for the Nunthorpe. Straight after his last race we really didn't know what direction we were going. There was the option of waiting a couple more weeks for the G1 Flying Five (at the Curragh Sept. 12), but he's doing great and he's scheduled to leave Aug. 13.

“I had a talk with Paul Shanahan (of Coolmore) and he had a talk with Mr. Magnier, Mr. Smith and Mr. Tabor (owners). The Nunthorpe is kind of a stallion-maker race and carries a lot of weight at this time of year.

“He's got a direct flight from Indianapolis to Stansted and then off we'll go. Frankie is going to ride and we're excited.”

Golden Pal's task at York has, on paper at least, been made easier by the retirement of dual Nunthorpe hero Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a horse Ward admits he is full of admiration for.

“It's always a shame for racing every time a great old warrior like that is retired,” Ward said. “I have certainly been a big fan of his and have watched him for all these years. He got a big following, so any time the curtain is pulled down it's never good for racing. I wouldn't want to be taking him on when he's breathing fire, that's for sure!”

Dark Angel’s Angel Bleu Pounces For Vintage Success

With overnight soft-ground conditions deteriorating to heavy, Tuesday's G2 Unibet Vintage S. was shorn of G2 July S. victor and likely protagonist Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) on a card struck by multiple scratchings. Step forward Marc Chan's Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who followed up a one-length second in Saturday's Listed Pat Eddery S. to post a career high in Glorious Goodwood's day one juvenile feature. The 10-3 second choice and Ralph Beckett trainee had previously finished 13th behind the reopposing Berkshire Shadow (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) when contesting Royal Ascot's June 15 G2 Coventry S. and raced in fourth through halfway as that rival settled at the tail of the field. Making continued headway in the straight, he quickened smartly for his challenge entering the final furlong and was ridden out to withstand the late surge of 13-8 favourite Berkshire Shadow by 3/4-of-a-length for a career high.

“[Last] Saturday [at Ascot] went well, although he was a little keen and Frankie [Dettori] got off him and said he thinks the horse needs a little break,” explained trainer Ralph Beckett. “I had a chat with the owners and we decided that we should geld him, give him a holiday and send him to Hong Kong, where the owner has a permit to run horses, in the autumn. However, he bounced up the yard on Sunday morning so I told the owner that I think we should declare for Tuesday and I could hardly believe my luck when I saw the rain coming down overnight. I am not sure America would suit him as he likes a bit of juice. He is 2-out-of-2 on soft ground and I would say that we would maybe think about the [G1] Dewhurst S. and [G1 Vincent O'Brien Goffs] National S. now.”

Dettori added, “He was sweaty and keen when I rode him on Saturday so I told Ralph to give him a break as he was a bit over the top. I told [owner] Marc Chan that I'd told Ralph to give him a break and then Ralph calls me Sunday morning saying he's declared him for Goodwood on Tuesday. I wonder what Marc thinks of me after the horse goes and wins as well. Horses make a fool of you, but a combination of running round the turn and soft ground made a difference. He loved it.”

Reflecting on the performance of runner-up Berkshire Shadow, Oisin Murphy said, “He relaxed very well, but the pace was slow. He took a while to wind up and, when he did get going, he hit the line really well. He probably wants better ground and is a miler in the making.”

Angel Bleu, half-brother to a yearling colt by Siyouni (Fr), is the first of two foals produced by a full-sister to MG1SW sire Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won this contest in 2014, MG1SP G2 Great Voltigeur S. and G2 Hardwicke S. victor Idaho (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G1 Caulfield S. hero Cape of Good Hope (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The February-foaled bay's G1 Australia Oaks-winning third dam Circles of Gold (Aus) (Marscay {Aus}) threw MG1SW Australian champions Elvstroem (Aus) (Danehill) and Haradasun (Aus) (Fusaichi Pegasus).
