Westover To Have ‘A Good Rest’ Before Coming Back In The Autumn

Classic hero Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who won the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the end of June, will be freshened after his unplaced run in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. on Saturday. A winner of the G3 bet365 Classic Trial in his seasonal debut in April, the Juddmonte colourbearer ran third in the G1 Cazoo Derby for trainer Ralph Beckett. The bay set a contested pace in the King George.

“I think it just wasn't our day,” said Barry Mahon, general manager for Juddmonte. “As we had said prior to the race, we were a little nervous coming into it on the back of being to Epsom and the Curragh and it was a tight enough timescale with such a horse.

“He got a bit warm in the prelims and a little excited and then in the parade ring he got in behind Emily Upjohn (GB (Sea The Stars {Ire}), which wasn't ideal.

“Then the race just didn't pan out in our favour. There wasn't a lot of pace and Westover was a little bit keen so we got left in front. It just wasn't ideal and wasn't our day.

“He'll have a good rest now, I spoke to Ralph this morning and the horse has come out of it fine. He has a couple of little overreaches on his hind leg where maybe in the first furlong or two when he crossed over to the rail something caught him from behind, but all just superficial.”

A G1 St Leger bid at Doncaster is under consideration, as well as possible appearances in the G2 Prix Niel and G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Tromphe, but connections will take a patient approach.

“That's [the St Leger is] definitely on the agenda,” Mahon continued. “And also all the other middle-distance races such as the Prix Niel and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and whatever else, but the horse is going to tell us where and when.

“We'll give him a good rest now and freshen him up for the autumn. We probably won't even talk about a race for probably a month until we've seen how he is and then we'll start working towards something at that stage.

“He's trained great all season and one of his biggest attributes has been his calm, relaxed nature and we saw on Saturday that we'd probably just pushed him far enough and he was beginning to get warm beforehand, he just needs a rest now and we'll regroup for the autumn.”

Bourbon Bash (City of Light) debuts here for D. Wayne Lukas, who sends the colt–out of a half to GISW Volatile (Violence)–to post for BC Stables. Upgrade (Flatter) rounds this field as the most expensive of the bunch, a $550,000 KEESEP purchase by Repole and St Elias Stables last year. RARIFY (Justify) is a daughter of Bella Jolie–making her a half to champion sprinter-turned-sire Runhappy (Super Saver)–and a $750,000 KEESEP purchase by the powerhouse connections of Westerberg, Mrs. John Magnier, Jonathan Poulin, Derrick Smith, and Michael Tabor, looms a long a shadow over this field. Wesley Ward will send her to post in this juvenile dash. Randomized (Nyquist) looks to validate her $420,000 KEESEP price tag for her Preakness-winning connections of Klaravich and Chad Brown. She's out of a half to MGISP millionaire Smooth Air (Smooth Jazz) and the dam of course record-setting MGISW Got Stormy (Get Stormy). Take Charge Briana (Curlin), hailing from the family of broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady (Dehere) via second dam Charming (Seeking the Gold), goes out from the D. Wayne Lukas barn. TJCIS PP

IDEA GENERATION (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}) looks set to continue what could be a big day for the Chad Brown barn. Klaravich Stables went to 340,000gns–about US$485,808–at TATOCT last year for her. Out of a half to G1SW Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}); G1SP Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}); and GSW Wilshire Boulevard (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), the firster picks up the services of Irad Ortiz Jr. Stay Lost (Bernardini) is part of the Joseph O'Brien contingent brought over by the young trainer for the Saratoga meeting. John Shirreffs sends the Stonestreet-bred, C R K Stable-owned SKINNER (Curlin) to the blocks for his career showing here. The colt is out of a dam who is no stranger to California, former 'TDN Rising Star' and GIII Rancho Bernardo H. heroine Winding Way (Malibu Moon), and has a set of winning half-siblings. Breaking from the rail, MANASSAS (Frankel {GB}) brings Group and Grade I quality pedigree on both sides. Goffs November Sensation Debuts For Juddmonte

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Thursday's Observations features a co-topper of the 2020 Goffs November Foals Sale.

ARREST (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was, at €440,000, one of a trio who shared top billing at the 2020 Goffs November Foals Sale when secured by Juddmonte. Introduced by John and Thady Gosden, the half-brother to the Hong Kong Group 3 winner Dinozzo (Ire) (Lilbourne Lad {Ire}) from the family of the G1 Nassau S. runner-up Narniyn (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is one of two representatives of the operation in the line-up along with the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Nostrum (GB) (Kingman {GB}), a half-brother to the dual Group 3 scorer Imaging (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

PREPENSE (GB) (Kingman {GB}) is another notable debutante for Juddmonte on Thursday, being a full-sister to the high-class dual Group 2-winning sire Headman (GB) and a half to the GII Baltimore/Washington International Turf Cup winner Projected (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). Sir Michael Stoute introduces the March-foaled bay, whose rivals include Bjorn Nielsen's John and Thady Gosden-trained Cruella De Vill (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a half-sister to the famed Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

TOWER OF LONDON (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}), a full-brother to the Irish Derby and St Leger hero Capri (Ire), is the latest juvenile to emerge from Ballydoyle's fully-loaded cannon in 2022. Jim Bolger won this 12 months ago and relies on the fellow newcomer Fleetfoot (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), a grandson of the GI Personal Ensign S. and GI Beldame S. heroine Fleet Indian (Indian Charlie) who was a €135,000 Goffs February purchase from the Shadwell draft owned by the Bolgers and Frederik Tylicki.

Frankel’s Hans Andersen Powers To Rising Stardom In Ireland

Westerberg and Coolmore's 450,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shadow Hunter {Ire}, by Arcano {Ire}) gained much benefit for his debut run, tackling an extended seven furlongs at Tipperary last month, and earned a 'TDN Rising Star' badge with a dominant display down to seven furlongs for Saturday's Juddmonte Farms Expert Eye Irish EBF (C&G) Maiden at the Curragh. The 10-11 favourite was sharply into stride to gain immediate control. Nudged along when the pack threatened approaching the quarter-mile marker, he held a comfortable buffer entering the final furlong and quickened beyond recall in style before easily holding the late rush of Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) by 1 3/4 lengths.

“He had a lovely run the first day, he learned plenty and we're delighted with him,” said Aidan O'Brien. “He was a little bit green turning in in Tipperary and came forward lovely. He won well today and should have no problem stepping into stakes company now. He should have no problem going further, but there is no rush to step him up [in trip]. He could come back here for the [G2] Futurity or something like that.”

Hans Andersen, full-brother to a yearling colt, is the second of three foals and lone runner produced by Listed Roses S. victrix and G3 Cornwallis S. third Shadow Hunter (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}), herself the leading performer out of a winning half to G1 1000 Guineas placegetter Super Sleuth (Ire) (Selkirk).
