First Winner For Late Stallion Effinex Comes At Saratoga

A powerful turn of foot in the stretch by Effinity led to the first winner for the late New York sire Effinex on Sunday at Saratoga Race Course, BloodHorse reports.

After a slightly troubled start, Effinity ran three-wide into the turn, then swung even wider to take over the lead and draw off in the stretch by four lengths. The colt completed the 5 1/2-furlong race in 1:06.36 over a fast main track under jockey Luis Saez. Brad Cox saddled the colt for Zilla Racing Stables.

Effinity was bred in New York by Barry Ostrager, out of the stakes-placed Freud mare Letsshootpool. Grade 3-placed Show Me the Cash is in his extended family.

Effinex, a son of Mineshaft, stood his lone season at Questroyal North in Stillwater, N.Y., then moved to McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds at the end of the season. The stallion died suddenly in the fall of 2017 at age six due to a pulmonary artery rupture, leaving just one crop of runners.

He was one of New York's most popular stallions in his lone season at stud, retiring to his native state after a racing career that saw him win nine of 28 starts for earnings of $3,312,950.

Effinex got better with age, developing into one of North America's top handicap division runners with wins in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap, two editions of the G2 Suburban Handicap, the G2 Oaklawn Handicap, and the G3 Excelsior Stakes. He also finished second in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Classic.

Dream Quist Becomes First Winner At Stud For Nyquist

Although favored at Churchill Downs last month, Nyquist's 2-year-old filly Dream Quist didn't quite seem to take to the sloppy going in her first start. However, she appears to have learned from the experience as she broke her maiden at Ellis Park to give her Kentucky Derby-winning sire his first winner as a stallion.

Although getting knocked around a bit at the start, Dream Quist didn't waste time getting into position and was soon tracking in third after a quarter of a mile.

As the field approached the turn, she took aim at the leader and sprinted by that one at the top of the stretch. The odds-on favorite passed tiring horses late to grab second but Dream Quist was 4 1/2 lengths clear at the wire.

Dream Quist was bred by Seclusive Farm LLC, Chester and Anne Prince, and James Murphy in Kentucky. She is out of listed winner Seacrettina who is a half to G2-placed Ramsgate.

Dream Quist was a $265,000 yearling at Fasig-Tipton in 2019, a year in which Nyquist was the leading first-crop yearling sire by average. In 2020, he is the leading 2-year-old sire by median.

Nyquist resides at Darley's U.S. base in Lexington, Ky., where he stood the 2020 breeding season for an advertised fee of $40,000.

Uncle Lino Sires First Winner At Delaware Park

Pennsylvania stallion Uncle Lino was represented by his first winner at stud on Saturday, when the filly Hipnotizada drew off to win a Delaware Park maiden special weight by 6 1/4 lengths, BloodHorse reports.

In her second career start, Hipnotizada took the lead out of the gate under jockey Carol Cedeno and drew off relatively unchallenged to win the 5 1/2-furlong race and stop the clock in 1:04.29 over a fast main track. Anthony Pecoraro trained the filly for owner Black Cloud Racing Stable.

Hipnotizada was bred in Pennsylvania by White Diamond Inc., out of the placed Harlan's Holiday mare Precious Penny. Champion Victorian Prince is in her extended family.

Uncle Lino stood the 2020 breeding season at Northview PA in Peach Bottom, Pa., for an advertised fee of $4,000.

The 7-year-old son of Uncle Mo won two of eight starts during his on-track career for earnings of $316,160. In addition to winning the California Chrome Stakes, Uncle Lino finished second in the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes and third in the G1 Santa Anita Derby.

Uncle Lino is out of the unraced Orientate mare Haysee. His second dam is 2011 Broodmare of the Year Oatsee, making Haysee a sibling to Preakness Stakes winner Shackleford, Grade 1 winner Lady Joanne, Grade 2 winner Afleeting Lady, Grade 3 winner Baghdaria, Grade 2-placed stakes winner Stephanoatsee, and graded stakes producer Grand Portege.

First Winner For California Chrome Comes In Russia

Two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome was represented by his first winner at stud on Saturday, when Sunkar Time won a maiden race at Krasnodar Racetrack in Russia, Alan Carasso of Thoroughbred Daily News reports.

Sunkar Time prevailed in a 1,400-meter race (about seven furlongs), winning on debut for owner Rustam Mantikov and trainer O.S. Samokhina.

The colt was bred in Kentucky by Bruce C. Ryan, out of the multiple stakes-placed Left Banker mare Kiosk, an Ohio Broodmare of the Year whose runners include two-time Ohio Horse of the Year Needmore Flattery, stakes winner Kiosk's Cause, and stakes-placed Monetary Reward.

Sunkar Time sold to Mikhail Yanakov's Olympia Star for $14,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, and he was exported to Russia to compete under new ownership.

Krasnodar Racetrack was also the site of the first winner by Claiborne Farm resident Ironicus in June. Other stallions of note to pick up first winners in Russia include Horse of the Year and classic sire Curlin, and champion Big Brown.

California Chrome is at the end of his first season at Arrow Stud in Japan after being purchased by the JS Company LTD. last fall and exported, with high expectations for his first book of mares in his new home. He spent his first two seasons at Taylor Made Stallions in Nicholasville, Ky.

As part of the sale agreement, the California Chrome Syndicate has the first right of refusal if California Chrome is ever sold, and upon retirement from breeding, he can live out the remainder of his life at Taylor Made.

A 9-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit, California Chrome became one of the top runners of his generation during his on-track career, winning 16 of 27 starts for $14,752,650. He was named Horse of the Year in 2014 and 2016, and racked up a list of notable victories including the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Dubai World Cup, along with scores in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, Hollywood Derby, Pacific Classic Stakes, and Awesome Again Stakes.

California Chrome is out of the winning Not For Love mare Love the Chase. Champion Cascapedia is in his extended family.

California Chrome was represented by his first winner when Sunkar Time (2c x Kiosk, by Left Banker) scored on debut Saturday at Krasnodar. He is a half-brother to multiple OH-bred SW Needmore Flattery.
