Biederman Steps Down from the Mic

Tom Biederman will be stepping down from the auctioneer stand at Fasig-Tipton at the end of 2023 to focus more on his Lexington-based Biederman Real Estate and Auctioneers company.

Biederman has served as an auctioneer and pedigree announcer at Fasig-Tipton for the past 25 years. He began in the Thoroughbred auction industry as a student at the University of Kentucky and has served in nearly every capacity available in the business, previously working for Ocala Breeders' Sales Company, Barrett's, the Canadian Thoroughbred Breeders and many others.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of serving, not only with the Fasig-Tipton family, but just as importantly, the breeders, owners, consignors, buyers, and their supporters. It has been a wonderful honor to ply my trade at some of the most recognized Thoroughbred auctions in the world, including Fasig-Tipton Saratoga and the November sale for the last several years,” Biederman said.

He continued, “While I will continue to be involved in the Thoroughbred industry as a consultant and participant, my primary focus going forward will turn to expanding and improving Biederman Real Estate and Auctioneers, a company based in Lexington and founded in 1994 to assist buyers and sellers of quality Kentucky real estate and other commodities.”

Boyd Browning, Fasig-Tipton CEO, added, “Tom has been a valuable member of the Fasig-Tipton team for nearly four decades. He has served the company and our customers impeccably during this time. Although he will no longer be in the auction stand, we look forward to his continued involvement with Fasig-Tipton and the Thoroughbred industry as a horse owner and leader in the Central Kentucky real estate market.”

Len Green Joins the TDN Writers’ Room Podcast

Who better to be the Green Group Guest of the Week Than Mr. Green Group himself, Len Green. Green joined the 'TDN Writers' Room' podcast presented by Keeneland to discuss the latest goings-on with his DJ Stable as well as to offer advice on how those in the Thoroughbred industry can best prepare for the upcoming tax season.

The best horse DJ Stable campaigned in recent years was Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief), who won the 2022 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies on her way to being named champion 2-year-old filly. She did not live up to expectations this year, going 0-for-3. But Green said that, as much as racing is a hobby to many, it should also always be considered a business. The Greens bought Wonder Wheel as a yearling at Keeneland September for $275,000 and sold her at this year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale for $3.2 million. It was, Green said, the proper business decision to make.

“If you decide that you want to run this as a business, and I think it's very, very important that people see this as a business, you have to make business decisions,” he said. “And the business decisions are that when a horse is no longer a racing horse, it's time to cut bait. I might have said it's not worth taking a horse out of training after a tough campaign. Instead, wait several months and try to get her back into racing form. Maybe with other horses, it works. Now was the time to sow it as opposed to racing on. So that's the difference between people who are in this thing for a hobby and not as a business. Businesses, you make business decisions.”

Green believes he knows the tax business when it comes to racing inside and out because he has owned so many horses himself and has been active in the sport for decades.

“I know these things having owned 200 horses every year myself,” he said. “I know what the expense is. I know what the ratios are. I know what you're missing. Have you donated any horses? Where is this horse? Where did you buy it? Well, I bought it, but I didn't pay for it yet. It doesn't make any difference when you pay for it. It's when you take a title and when you put it in use, that's when it's deductible. Whether you use me or somebody else, you have to have someone who is knowledgeable. Someone who can look at your expenses and tell you, okay, here's the way to do it.”

Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association,https://www.kentuckybred.org/https://www.nyrabets.com/ West Point Thoroughbreds, Lane's End, WinStar Farm and XBTV.com, the team of Zoe Cadman and Bill Finley reviewed last weekend's races at Aqueduct where the fare included the GII Cigar Mile H. and a thrilling rendition of the GII Remsen S., won by Dornoch (Good Magic), the full-brother to 2023 GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage. The focus turned to Del Mar, where Chad Brown added to his incredible record at the seaside oval, winning two Grade I's, including the GI Matriarch S., where his quartet of starters finished one, two, three and four. Cadman and Finley also gave their take on the latest developments in the scopolamine case from the 2018 GI Santa Anita Derby, that has, at least for now, resulted in the disqualification of Justify (Scat Daddy).

Maclean’s Music Firster Frolics In the Mud at Aqueduct

2nd-Aqueduct, $85,000, Msw, 12-2, 2yo, 7f, 1:21.99, my, 9 1/2 lengths.
EL CAPI (c, 2, Maclean's Music–Nightlife Baby, by Flatter) was chilly on the board at 13-1 from a morning line of 6-1, but ran them off their feet in Saturday's second race at Aqueduct to open his account in impressive fashion. Hustled away from the inside gate by Jose Gomez, the bay was in front after 100 yards and had already opened an imposing advantage through a quarter in :22.03. Still going great guns after a half-mile in a slick :44.73, El Capi was under a vigorous hand ride through the final furlong and was well clear under the line. Hop Sing (Curlin), the well-backed 8-5 favorite, was off slowly, was deftly angled to the inside by Luis Saez on the turn and just managed to outfinish $1-million KEESEP graduate Conquest Warrior (City of Light), who was last into stride, took an overland route on the turn and stayed on gamely to be third at a lightly regarded 10-1. Having most recently sold for $220,000 at the OBS March Sale, El Capi had made three previous trips through a sales ring. A $35,000 Keeneland November weanling, he fetched the identical amount at last year's Fasig-Tipton February sale and made $75,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale last October. When mated with A.P. Indy-line dams, Maclean's Music has sired two of his four Grade I winners–Jackie's Warrior and Cloud Computing–while GSW & GISP Dance to the Music holds the same distinction. Fellow Grade III winner Classic Rock has a second dam by A.P. Indy. Nightlife Baby's foal of 2022, a colt by Good Magic, was a $60,000 KEENOV weanling purchase by Machmer Hall that was knocked down to Oracle Bloodstock for $230,000 at KEESEP this year. The weanling relation is another colt by Good Magic and Nightlife Baby was most recently bred back to Maclean's Music. Sales history: $35,000 Wlg '21 KEENOV; $35,000 Ylg '22 FTKFEB; $75,000 Ylg '22 EASOCT; $220,000 2yo '23 OBSMAR. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $46,750.
