Bolt d’Oro Filly a Professional Debut Winner at Saratoga

MISS D'OR CHERIE (f, 2, Bolt d'Oro–Above Fashion {SW & GSP, $188,590}, by Paddy O'Prado) was drawn widest in a nine-strong field for Thursday's state-bred maiden at Saratoga and turned in a most professional debut effort to open her account at first asking. Outsprinted through the opening exchanges by Snarky (Redesdale), who won the break from the rail, the $300,000 OBS April acquisition showed ample early pace to sit right off the leader's flank from second. Inching closer still at the midway point of the turn, the dark bay eased to the front with a bit more than a quarter-mile to travel, pinching a break entering the final furlong and went on to score by three lengths as the 14-5 favorite. Book of Wisdom (Solomini) ran on gamely for second while no menace to the winner. Miss d'Or Cherie also sold for $72,000 as a weanling at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton November Sale and again at that auction house's Kentucky July Yearling Sale, where she fetched $160,000. Christopher Shelli, who operates Fort Christopher's Thoroughbreds in Fort Edward, New York, purchased Miss d'Or Cherie's dam for $27,000 on behalf of Jon Stillman's Caliburn Farm in foal to Star Guitar at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale and they began upgrading her breeding record when mating her with Bernardini that season. He sold the resulting foal, a filly, for $90,000 as the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Sale in 2021 and the mare has since been represented by a Vino Rosso colt of 2022 that sells as hip 494 during next Monday's session of the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearling Sale and a McKinzie filly foaled this past Apr. 7. Above Fashion was subsequently covered by Epicenter. Stillman and his wife Margaret Davenport made the short drive from their farm to watch the race in person Thursday afternoon. “It was a magic moment, just great,” Stillman said. “When she hit the ground, she just had this maturity about her to go along with her physical appearance. As if she knew more than she really did. Fasig-Tipton, Keeneland Announce Fixed Monday-Tuesday November Dates

Starting in 2024, the Kentucky November breeding stock sales dates will be fixed on the Monday and Tuesday after the Breeders' Cup, despite the location of the event, according to a joint press release from Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland, who said that the goal was providing “stability and the strongest market possible.”

This year, the Fasig-Tipton November auction will be held Tuesday, Nov. 7, and Keeneland November will open Wednesday, Nov. 8.

Beginning in November 2024, the Fasig-Tipton November Sale will take place on the Monday following the Breeders' Cup, while the November Breeding Stock Sale at Keeneland will begin on Tuesday. The Monday/Tuesday schedule will remain in place regardless of where the Breeders' Cup is staged. The 2024 World Championships will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2, 2024, at Del Mar. Accordingly, the Fasig-Tipton November Sale will commence Monday, Nov. 4 and Keeneland November will open Tuesday, Nov. 5.

In the past few years, the sales dates have varied based on the location of the Breeders' Cup and the interruption caused by the Covid pandemic.

“Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton share a commitment to do what is best for the health and vibrancy of our industry,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “This schedule not only provides clarity, but capitalizes on the momentum from Breeders' Cup, maximizes the opportunity for international buyers to participate and creates positive energy surrounding both sales. We've listened to the thoughtful feedback from our clients and members of the Consignors and Commercial Breeders Association and worked to determine an outcome that is beneficial for everyone.”

“Both sales companies share a vision and commitment to serve the marketplace in the most effective manner,” Fasig-Tipton President and CEO Boyd Browning Jr. said. “This announcement provides all industry participants a defined and consistent schedule for the November sales.”

Walker Hancock, the president of the Consignors and Breeders Association, said, “I want to thank the sales companies for getting together and figuring out this path forward that benefits the whole industry. It's great to see them working together. It's a solution that benefits all.”

Elite Sales co-owner Liz Crow, a member of the board of the CBA and who frequently sells mares at the two sales who have competed in the Breeders' Cup just days before, said, “When the Breeders' Cup is in Kentucky, I think Monday-Tuesday is great. When it's in California, I would prefer Tuesday-Wednesday. I found that when buyers have more time they can gather more information and do their homework, and it's less stressful on everyone, including our equine athletes, which are the most important factor here. Flying these mares home and then having them sell right off the plane is harsh and not very safe for them. I have had a few instances of horses colicking, and it's hard to get them rehydrated after a hard race like the Breeders' Cup. The buyers are rushed through the process when you have the Breeders' Cup in California. I am very happy that we're not doing Sunday any more. And I am happy the sales companies worked together and were able to figure something out this year before the entry deadline.”

Horse of the Year Havre de Grace Passes Away

Havre de Grace (Saint Liam–Easter Bunnette, by Carson City), the 2011 Horse of the Year and Eclipse Award-winning older mare who sold to Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm for $10 million at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, passed away in the early morning hours of Apr. 30. Wayne Sweezey, who boarded Havre de Grace at his Timber Town Farm, confirmed that the 16-year-old mare hemorrhaged multiple times and died after producing a colt by Into Mischief the afternoon of Apr. 28.

“She was just so smart, she fought all the way to the end, so full of grace, like her name says,” an emotional Pope said via phone Sunday afternoon. “She was stoic right to the end. I am so grateful that I was able to be here, it would have been a great deal more difficult if I hadn't made it up.”

Bred in Kentucky by Nancy S. Dillman, Havre de Grace was a $380,000 Keeneland September purchase by the late Rick Porter and raced in the colors of Fox Hill Farms, finishing out of the top three just once in her 16 career starts. A leading 3-year-old of her generation in 2010, Havre de Grace was second to Blind Luck in that year's GI Alabama S. before turning the tables in the GII Fitz Dixon Cotillion S. and finishing third in the GI Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic. She was an even better filly at four, taking the GI Apple Blossom H. that April ahead of a victory versus the boys in the GI Woodward S. at Saratoga. A romping winner of the GI Beldame Invitational S., the bay was fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic and closed her career victoriously in the 2012 New Orleans Ladies Classic. She bankrolled $2,586,175.

Having been named Horse of the Year at the beginning of 2012, Havre de Grace was always going to be the pin-up horse at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, and so it proved, as Pope went to eight figures for the then 5-year-old from the Taylor Made draft.

“I don't know what to say,” Pope commented at the time. “She's beautiful. You look at her and she's everything a racehorse should be, she did everything a racehorse could do and she has a wonderful attitude. She's the epitome of what we're all trying to breed. Hopefully she'll pass that on to her foals.”

Underbidders were reported to include Frank Stronach, Besilu Stables' Ben Leon and Coolmore.

Including the Into Mischief colt, Havre de Grace has produced eight foals and five winners from as many to the races. Pope's affinity for Tapit is well-known, and five of Havre de Grace's first six foals are by the Gainesway star. The best of them is her filly of 2016, Graceful Princess, who won the 2021 GIII Molly Pitcher S. and who is also represented by an Into Mischief colt for her first foal this season. Those of Havre de Grace's foals that have been offered at public auction have been well-received, as River Front (War Front) was bought back on a bid of $1.9 million at KEESEP in 2016, while Marvelous Guide (Tapit) was sold for $550,000 at the same auction two years later. The mare is also represented by a 2-year-old Justify colt in addition to her newest foal, who seems to be handling the events of recent days in stride.

“The Into Mischief colt is a big horse and looks like he inherited her smarts,” she said. “He knew she was in trouble. After looking at her for a couple of hours, he wanted to lay down so we made him a bed of straw right out where she could see him.

“She was such a pleasure to be around, she was kind and friendly, but she didn't want people doting all over her,” Pope continued. “I remember watching her one day, there was a plane overhead and she just cocked her head and kind of took everything in, never turned a hair.”

There is plenty of Havre de Grace in her offspring, Pope said.

“I think she passed on her personality to her offspring and they are all smart like she is. Hopefully she'll be in the Hall of Fame one day.”

Havre de Grace was among the finalists for induction this August.

“Thanks to everyone at Timber Town and the three vets that did everything that they could to save her. I want to give special thanks to Dr. Charlie Scroggins and Dr. Laurie Metcalf.”

Sweezey said that they have already accessed a nurse mare and that the Into Mischief colt has accepted her.

Pope confirmed that Havre de Grace would be cremated, with some of her ashes to be spread across Timber Town joining America's Joy (American Pharoah), the half-sister to Into Mischief, Beholder and Mendelssohn who sadly died in the summer of 2021.
