Browne McMonagle Snapped Up To Ride White Birch In Irish Derby

Dylan Browne McMonagle has been provided with a golden opportunity to record his first Classic success in the saddle with the news that John Murphy has snapped up the young riding sensation for White Birch (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) ahead of Sunday's Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

White Birch overcame a nightmare start to finish an excellent third in the Derby behind Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). He was ridden at Epsom by Colin Keane but, with the reigning Irish champion jockey suspended for Sunday's highlight, Murphy has turned to Browne McMonagle to ride the Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez-owned colt.

Speaking of his delight about the call up, Browne McMonagle told Racing TV, “I'm delighted to get the leg up, massive thanks to connections and Mr Murphy and all the gang down there. It is a great ride to pick up and I'm just blessed to get the leg over him.

“It's my first ride in the race, so hopefully we will have a bit of luck. He has got good form coming into it. I think the Curragh will suit him well.”

Browne McMonagle is based with Joseph O'Brien, for whom he partnered his first Group 1 victory aboard Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in the National S. at the Curragh last season.

While acknowledging that his Irish Derby mount has a tendency to break slowly from the stalls, Browne McMonagle says that he is confident that, if the colt can get away with that anywhere, the Curragh is the place given the fairness of the track.

“He's a bit awkward away from the gates but I think if it happens again we won't be worrying because in the Curragh you have got plenty of time to get into it. There's a long straight there, so hopefully he has got a live chance and can run a big race.”

“He has won on heavy and he has form on good to firm ground, so we are going to have no worries that way. He's fairly versatile and I think the Curragh is going to suit him well. He's going to have plenty of time to get into it, it is a big galloping track.”

Browne McMonagle added, “He seems to be getting to the line well on his last couple of starts. Hopefully, he will be bang there.”

Big-Name Transfer: Asadna Switched From George Boughey To Alice Haynes

Asadna (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), one of the big talking horses this season, has been switched from George Boughey to Alice Haynes by Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah after the colt's ninth-placed effort in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot.

Much of the hype surrounding the colt stemmed from a scintillating 12-length victory on debut at Ripon. It was on the strength of that performance that Asadna was sent off just 7-2 for the Coventry but he failed to land a glove on River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and was beaten six lengths at the winning line.

Haynes commented, “I'm very fortunate, it's lovely to be sent a horse who looks to have so much potential. It's great to get the call up. Obviously it's not too nice for George and trainers do like to stick together, but he was going to another yard and it's great for the team that he is joining us.”

She added, “It's a bit too early to say what we might do, we'll just let him settle in at the yard and see from there.”

Haynes also confirmed the transfer of Danger Alert (GB) (Ardad {Ire}) from Boughey's yard, with the three-year-old having been withdrawn from the Palace of Holyroodhouse S. on veterinary advice at Ascot on Friday.

The three-times winner may not be in Haynes' care too long though as he is entered at Tattersalls sales next month.

She added, “We also have Danger Alert who is entered in the July sale but will run before.”

Harrington Readies Two-Pronged Attack For Wednesday’s Naas Oaks Trial

Jessica Harrington is preparing a two-pronged attack on Wednesday's Al Shira'aa Racing Irish EBF Naas Oaks Trial, a race the trainer won in 2019 with Trethias (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Fresh from sending out Villanova Queen (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) to win at Royal Ascot, Harrington will rely on the progressive Snowcapped (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) and Small Oasis (GB) (Sioux Nation).

Ireland's champion jockey Colin Keane was in the saddle aboard Villanova Queen at Ascot and Harrington has snapped up his services for Snowcapped while Ben Coen rides Small Oasis.

“Things just didn't really work out for Small Oasis in France earlier this month when she ran in a listed race at Longchamp but she has come back from that in good form and we are looking forward to stepping her up in trip,” Kate Harrington, assistant trainer to her mother, Jessica, said on Monday.

“Snowcapped has been a revelation this season and ran a cracking race on Guineas weekend at the Curragh. She is going from a handicap up to listed company now but hopefully she can keep progressing.”

She added, “We didn't have Small Oasis last season but they are two fillies going in the right direction and we are looking forward to running them on Wednesday. Consideration might have to be given to looking at an Irish Oaks with them if they run well on Wednesday so we'll wait and see what happens. The ground should be perfect for both of them.”

Connections Of Chaldean Eye Sussex Rematch With Paddington

Connections of the 2,000 Guineas winner Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) could bid to turn the tables on Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood after suffering a comprehensive defeat to Aidan O'Brien's Irish 2,000 Guineas winner in the St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot last week.

Frankie Dettori attempted to make all the running aboard Andrew Balding's Juddmonte-owned colt, who had no answer when Paddington swooped by early in the straight at Ascot, but those associated with the colt are far from downbeat after the performance.

Juddmonte's Barry Mahon said, “He ran a great race, to be fair. The winner is obviously a very good horse who is improving quickly and we were happy with our lad.

“We would have probably liked a lead. The early pace was pretty frenetic, I think Frankie just felt he couldn't get a breather into him the whole way and it just cost him when he turned in. All told, it was a nice run and we look forward to taking on the winner again some day.”

O'Brien nominated the Sussex as a potential target for Paddington in the immediate aftermath of his Ascot triumph and Mahon also views the Group One contest as the obvious next port of call for Chaldean.

“That looks the next obvious target,” Mahon said. “Let's see how he bounces out of it, Andrew said to me the next day he was in good shape but I haven't really touched base with him since.

“He's not in the Prix Jean Prat, but that could be an option if Andrew thought it was the right thing to do. He's a top-class horse. I suppose it's more disappointing when you're beaten if you have an unbeaten record, but luckily we were beaten in our maiden and Frankie fell off him in the Greenham at Newbury! We know he's still a nice horse to look forward to for the rest of the year.”
