Mid-Season Break For Tahiyra Ahead Of Likely Matron Stakes Tilt On ICW

Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) has returned home to Gilltown Stud for a well-deserved break after her Royal Ascot heroics and, according to Pat Downes, the triple Group 1 winner could kick-start her autumn campaign in the G1 Matron S. at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend. 

Downes, the Aga Khan's manager of the Irish studs, has said that the most impressive aspect of Tahiyra's G1 Coronation S. success was the fact that Dermot Weld's charge was able to win despite the race not being run to suit.

Downes said, “We were delighted with her performance at Ascot. It was a bit of a muddling race. It got very tactical and there wasn't much pace. That didn't suit us and we'd have preferred a stronger gallop. But she travels and she quickens and she was able to overcome a messy race which was obviously very pleasing for us.”

He added, “The good horses overcome things like that. If some issues present themselves in a race, they find a way of winning, don't they?”

Downes revealed that Tahiyra will have an easy couple of weeks before rejoining Weld with a view towards a busy autumn campaign. 

He explained, “She will be here for a couple of weeks. We wouldn't give her any longer–she might do too well if we did! It's lovely to have her back here and the staff are delighted to see her. Hopefully she will have a nice couple of weeks and head back down to Rosewell House.”

Downes added on the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner, “The Matron is pretty much the way we are looking at the moment and then we can have a discussion about what comes after that. There are a lot of options on the table for her.”

Auguste Rodin Bids To Provide O’Brien With 100th Classic Win In Irish Derby

Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) is on track to bid for a Derby double at the Curragh on Sunday with Aidan O'Brien's Epsom hero heading a field of 11 forfeits for the Curragh showpiece. 

If successful in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, Auguste Rodin would provide the master of Ballydoyle with his 100th European Classic success, but the colt will face stiff competition with the third and fourth home at Epsom still in the picture for the race. 

O'Brien has five horses remaining in the €1.25m contest, which will be the first Irish Derby run on a Sunday since 2011, and the main attraction of the three-day fixture.

Auguste Rodin will be bidding to give Ryan Moore his first win in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and the rider heaped praise on O'Brien ahead of what could be an historic weekend for the trainer.

Moore said, “Aidan has shown for the last 30 years what an unbelievable talent he is. Genius gets bandied around an awful lot but how he prepares his horses and gets them to that day, to do it as many times as he has is a very special thing to do.

“I know the horse was disappointing at Newmarket, but there were reasons for that and Aidan always had complete belief in the horse. He is a horse that everyone always held in the highest regard from a very early stage.”

Auguste Rodin could also become the first horse to complete the Epsom-Curragh Derby double since Harzand (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in 2016. Among those standing in his way could be his own stable companions Adelaide River, Covent Garden, Peking Opera and San Antonio.  

However, John Murphy's White Birch (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), a first ride in the Irish Derby for Dylan Browne McMonagle, and the Jessica Harrington-trained Sprewell (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}), third and fourth respectively at Epsom a month ago, appear to be the biggest threats to O'Brien's Epsom scorer.  

Harrington is expecting a big run from Sprewell but is realistic about the task at hand. She said on Tuesday, “I'm very happy with his preparation. He came out of Epsom very well and we've just slowly built him up. He's a very laid-back character and it's quite easy to keep the preparation going.

“Auguste Rodin is going to be very difficult to beat. He's proved himself to be an exceptional horse, to come back from what was a disaster really in the 2,000 Guineas.

“It was a great training feat for Aidan to get him back and to win so easily, as he did in Epsom. He's got to go out and do it again, but I'm presuming he'll be in good order. He's got it on the board and he beat us a fair way.”

She added, “You're always hoping. You don't go into those races thinking, 'I'll be grand being second'. I want to go in there thinking, 'I'll be grand if I can win'.”

Also standing their ground ahead of Friday's final declaration stage are the Dermot Weld-trained Knight To King, an impressive winner at Gowran Park on his debut, Joseph O'Brien's Leopardstown Derby Trial second Up And Under, the Donnacha O'Brien-trained Proud And Regal and the Ralph Beckett-trained Salt Bay.

Dual Group 1-Winning Australian Sprinter Artorius Retired

Dual Group 1-winning Australian sprinter Artorius (Aus) (Flying Artie {Aus}) has been retired.

He was trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman and, in a career spanning 17 starts for the father-and-son partnership, earned over £1.2 million in prize-money. 

Artorius was last seen finishing fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Freedman Racing tweeted, “Following Artorius's brave fourth placing in Saturday's Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, the decision has been made to retire him to Newgate Farm. 

“He retires the winner of two Group 1s from his 17 starts. Of his 17 starts, 12 were at Group 1 level and he placed at the highest level in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

“He has taken the whole team at Freedman Racing and all his owners on a terrific ride with his two Group 1s and two trips to Royal Ascot. We wish the team at Newgate Farm all the best with him and look forward to seeing his progeny in the stable in the years to come.”

Artorius was purchased for $120,000 from the Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2020 by the Freedmans and Julian Blaxland. 

He won his first top level race in the Neds Blue Diamond S. at Caulfield on his third start before winning another Group 1 in the Furphy Canterbury S. at Randwick.

“Looking Forward To The Next Chapter” – Jockey Louis Steward Retires At 27

Ebor-winning jockey Louis Steward has announced that he will retire from race-riding after an 11-year career in the saddle.

Steward, 27, started as an apprentice and achieved plenty of success, including winning the Cambridgeshire and the Balmoral Handicap with Bronze Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in 2014 for Marcus Tregoning.

Steward rode close to 200 winners in his career, with a season-best of 37 in 2014, the year he partnered Mutual Regard (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}) to a 20-1 success in the valuable Ebor Handicap at York for Johnny Murtagh.

“After some long and careful thoughts I've decided my time in the saddle has come to an end,” Steward announced on Twitter.

“Thank you to everyone from my family, friends, owners, trainers and the stable staff that have given me some wonderful memories that I'll never forget. Looking forward to the next chapter!”
