Frankel’s Wild Beauty Takes The Fred Darling

Godolphin's incredible start to the season continued apace on Saturday as Wild Beauty (GB) (Frankel {GB}) took a competitive renewal of the G3 Dubai Duty Free S., or Fred Darling.  Reportedly due to be aimed at the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, last year's GI Natalma S. winner who was fifth behind Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in Newmarket's G1 Fillies' Mile was at the fore of the group racing towards the stands early. Taking time to get on top overall, the 3-1 second favourite outstayed the 11-4 market-leader Jumbly (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) in the final yards to secure a half-length success, with Majestic Glory (GB) (Frankel {GB}) 1 1/4 lengths away in third.

William Buick was impressed. “Wild Beauty beat the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner in the Natalma Stakes, so she is a high-class filly,” he said. “She showed last year that she wanted a mile and I don't think she will be running over seven furlongs again. I like what she did today–she was very genuine–and I think that she will improve plenty for it.”

Wild Beauty is out of the G3 Prix du Palais-Royal and G3 Prix de Meautry runner-up Tulips (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who also produced the G3 Burj Nahaar winner and G2 Godolphin Mile runner-up Desert Wisdom (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the G3 UAE Oaks runner-up Swift Rose (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Tulips, who has a yearling full-brother to the winner, is a granddaughter of the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and G1 Haydock Park Sprint Cup heroine Cherokee Rose (Ire) (Dancing Brave), ancestress of the G1 St Leger and G1 Hong Kong Vase winner Mastery (GB) (Sulamani {Ire}), the G1 Eclipse S. hero Mukhadram (GB) (Shamardal) and fellow sire Cable Bay (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

All-Weather Champions Crowned At Newcastle

David Probert, Michael Appleby, George Rooke and Godolphin all won divisional titles on All-Weather Championships Day at Newcastle. Probert won his first All-Weather Champion Jockey title with 82 victories.

Probert said, “It was always a goal for me to have a championship since winning back in 2008 when I was champion apprentice. It's a massive achievement and I have plenty of people to thank for that, and hopefully it rolls into a good grass season.”

Appleby, who collected his fifth consecutive trainers' title and sixth overall with 52 winners, said “We have a great team at home–good, dedicated staff, who have been with me a long time. They all work hard and it's well-deserved. I have to thank all the team.”

The All-Weather Winning-Most Horse was Intervention (Ire) (Swiss Spirit {GB}), from Appleby's yard, with five wins. The race for All-Weather Champion Apprentice was very tight, with Rooke prevailing by one winner at 18 over Oliver Stammers and Rhys Clutterbuck. Godolphin was crowned the All-Weather Champion Owner for the eighth year in a row with 43 wins.

Hugh Anderson, Godolphin Managing Director (UK and Dubai), said, “2021 was a banner year for Godolphin, and it is tremendous to begin 2022 with an eighth consecutive Owners' Championship on the all-weather. The all-weather season provides horses with a great introduction to racing over the winter, enabling them to go on to bigger and better things later in the year.

“Our thanks go to the whole team at Godolphin–the trainers, jockeys, and everyone who works in the racing yards. We now look forward to an exciting season on the turf.”

Triple Time Will Miss Guineas After Setback

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid's Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), a listed winner at Haydock last September, has sustained a setback and is no longer under consideration for the Apr. 30 G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. The colt ran third and second in a Leicester maiden and Haydock novice on June 1 and July 1 last year, respectively. He then graduated at the latter course going a mile in soft going on Aug. 6, prior to running out a 1 1/2-length winner of the Listed Ascendant S. at Haydock on Sept. 4. Triple Time pleased trainer Kevin Ryan in a Newmarket gallop earlier this week.

Ryan tweeted on Friday morning, “Unfortunately we have to say that Triple Time has met with a small setback which rules him out of the 2000 Guineas. It is a long season ahead and we will look forward to seeing him back in action.”
