Raclette Eclipsed As Rosacea Pounces For Prix de la Grotte Success

Haras de la Perelle's homebred 3-year-old filly Rosacea (Ire) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) concluded her four-race juvenile campaign with victory in October's G3 Prix des Reservoirs at Deauville and dented a collection of lofty reputations with a last-gasp effort in Sunday's G3 Prix de la Grotte over one mile at ParisLongchamp. Patiently ridden and trailing all eight rivals into the straight, the 9-1 chance was angled to the outside with 300 metres remaining and the Stephane Wattel trainee quickened smartly under mild urging in the closing stages to nail Daisy Maisy (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) by a half length in the shadows of the post. The hitherto undefeated Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), making her first start for Mikel Delzangles, finished 1 1/4 lengths away in third while 'TDN Rising Star' Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) failed to fire from off the pace and ran eighth of nine.

Rosacea, half-sister to a 2-year-old filly by Tamayuz (GB), is the third of four foals and lone scorer produced by a winning half-sister to GI E.P. Taylor S. heroine Reggane (GB) (Red Ransom). The February-foaled homebred bay's second dam Reine Zao (Fr) (Alzao), who ran third in the G3 Prix de Psyche, is a daughter of G1 Prix de Diane third and GI Gamely H. fourth Raintree Renegade (Green Forest).

Gosden Filly Catches The Eye At Newbury

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Sunday's Observations features a daughter of Sea The Stars (Ire).

3.21 Newbury, Mdn, £10,000, 3yo, f, 10fT
ATLANTIS (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) debuts for Craig Bernick and Harry McCalmont in the maiden which saw the rise of Eswarah (GB) (Unfuwain) and more recently Lah Ti Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Star Catcher (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Like the latter two, this 260,000gns Tattersalls December Yearling Sale graduate, whose half-brother is the G2 City of York S. winner Shine So Bright (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), represents John and Thady Gosden in a race containing Godolphin's similarly-unraced Life of Dreams (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), a Charlie Appleby-trained daughter of the G2 Lancashire Oaks winner Endless Time (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}).

HOW THEY FARED:

16.00 Cork, Mdn, €12,000, 3yo/up, 10f 30yT
Aidan O'Brien trainee Fleet Commander (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a full-brother to this year's G1 Hong Kong Gold Cup hero Russian Emperor (Ire), was unable to land a telling blow and finished 6 1/2 lengths off the winner in sixth.

16.45 Newbury, Mdn, £11,950, 3yo, 8fT
Shadwell Estate Company's homebred Morghom (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), a half-brother to MGSW G1 Irish 2000 Guineas third Mustajeeb (GB) (Nayef), won by an impressive 3 3/4 lengths at odds of 16-1.

18.15 Nottingham, Mdn, £7,500, 3yo, 10f 50yT
Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's 360,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 graduate Aimeric (GB) (Frankel {GB}), a half-brother to G1SW sire Aclaim (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), shaped with promise as the 15-8 favourite in this debut and finished 1 3/4 lengths off the winner in second.

Bon Appetit

Andre Fabre's appetite for success in the major international prizes shows no signs of abating and Sunday's action at ParisLongchamp offers more culinary delights, with Raclette (GB) (Frankel {GB}) at the heart of the party. Juddmonte's 'TDN Rising Star' has not been seen since winning by four lengths in a mile conditions event at Chantilly in September, but the daughter of Emollient (Empire Maker) was already big news even at that stage. Her re-entry in the G3 Prix de la Grotte sees her matched against Allan Belshaw's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runer-up Times Square (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), who chased home Raclette's stablemate Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in that course-and-distance test on Arc day. This is an intoxicating time of year and another who embodies the anything-is-still-possible principle is Infinity Nine Horses' unbeaten G3 Prix Miesque scorer Mangoustine (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who debuts for the Mikel Delzangles stable.

Gladiators, Ready

Fabre has the ace in the pack in the card's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau in Coolmore's G3 Prix des Chenes scorer Ancient Rome (War Front), who seemed to be progressing with each start in 2021 and almost upstaged Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the G1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud. Fabrice Chappet tackles him with Jean-Pierre-Joseph Dubois's 'TDN Rising Star' Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who needs to improve on his second in a Polytrack conditions event at Deauville in October but who had previously dazzled on his winning debut at Chantilly.

At Newbury, the 10-furlong Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup British EBF Conditions S. which has served as a Classic staging post in its own right in recent years and was won 12 months ago by Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) sees the return of Godolphin's G3 Zetland S. third Hafit (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) as Charlie Appleby spreads out his Derby hopes.

Freshman Sire Jungle Cat Off The Mark At Musselburgh

Former Kildangan Stud resident Jungle Cat (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) became the latest freshman off the mark when the Karl Burke-trained newcomer Miss Jungle Cat (GB), a 60,000gns Tattersalls Somerville yearling, pounced late to snag Saturday's Betway EBF Novice S. going a shade over five furlongs at Musselburgh. In fourth and under pressure at halfway, the 16-5 chance refused to wilt at the business end and kept on relentlessly under a continued drive to deny Explicit (Ire) (Expert Eye {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths inside the final 100 yards.

Miss Jungle Cat is the ninth of 10 foals and fifth scorer out of a winning half-sister to G3 Prix Saint-Romain scorer Eco Friendly (GB) (Sabrehill). Her second dam is G3 Goldene Peitsche victrix Flower Girl (GB) (Pharly {Fr}). The February-foaled bay is kin to Listed Harry Rosebery S. third Umneyati (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) and a yearling filly by Havana Gold (Ire).
