Saturday Insights: Big Pedigrees On Display In Saturday Action

7th-DMR, $82K, Msw, 2yo, f, 6 1/2f, 8:15 p.m.

A filly whose pedigree needs no introduction, TAMARA (Bolt d'Oro) is the latest foal out of MGISW Beholder to make the races for Spendthrift Farm and trainer Richard Mandella. Beholder, now a graded-stakes producer with Teena Ella (War Front), saw her youngest foal by Curlin bring a sale-topping $4,000,000 at last week's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale. Out of blue hen Leslie's Lady, she is of course a half-sister to GISW Mendelssohn and leading general sire Into Mischief. Drawn on the rail, Tamara picks up veteran Mike Smith for her debut.

Further outside for Mandella, Flynn's Chance (Medaglia d'Oro) brought $675,000 as a yearling out of Keeneland September last year and is a full-sister to GSW Moonlight d'Oro. This is the family of champion 3-year-old filly Abel Tasman (Quality Road).

A filly making her second start for trainer John Sadler, Hope Road (Quality Road) dead-heated for second by just a half-length at Del Mar July 22. She is the first foal out of GISW Marley's Freedom (Blame). TJCIS PPS

1st-SAR, $136K, Msw, 2yo, 6f, 1:10 p.m.

On the East Coast, Hunt Ball (Into Mischief) debuts for Godolphin and trainer Bill Mott. Out of the Tapit mare Dance Card, herself a Grade I winner, he is a half-brother to MGISW Cody's Wish (Curlin) and MGSW Endorsed (Medaglia d'Oro).

Act of Mutiny (Quality Road), a Will Farish homebred, is a half to GSW/GISP Eagle (Candy Ride {Arg}), MGSW and freshman sire Catalina Cruiser (Union Rags), and MGSW Royal Flag (Candy Ride {Arg}).

Against the rail, Risk It (Gun Runner) debuts for Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm and was a $500,000 Keeneland September yearling. TJCIS PPS

7th-ELP, $70K, Msw, 3yo/up, 6f, 4:00 p.m.

Making a belated debut for Shadwell Stables is Sahalat (Speightstown), a 4-year-old colt who brought $800,000 as a yearling back in 2020. He is a full-brother to MGISP Dawn the Destroyer. TJCIS PPS

Flatter Filly an Easy Debut Winner at Ellis

5th-Ellis, $67,900, Msw, 8-1, 2yo, f, 5 1/2fT, 1:03.77, fm, 4 1/4 lengths.
SONG OF NORWAY (f, 2, Flatter–Cougarstown {SW, $101,723}, by Speightstown) was installed the 2-1 favorite, her position only strengthened by the late scratch of the well-meant Pinotslilgirl (Jimmy Creed). Jumping to the front in a blink of an eye from her high draw, the Wesley Ward trainee led 3-1 chance Saltwater Taffy (Twirling Candy) and Midnight Angel (West Coast) through an initial quarter in :22.12. Rolling through the a half in :45.79, the blinkered filly opened up in the stretch, crossing the wire an uncontested 4 1/4-length winner over Saltwater Taffy, who outstayed 5-2 second choice Candy Landy (Candy Ride {Arg}). Following the race, the stewards had to take a look as Satona (Constitution), who broke awkwardly to the outside, was forced to check hard as she ran up on the heels of Candy Landy early. Following some deliberation, the result was allowed to stand. A half to Treason (Constitution), GSW, $196,277 and Elevenses (More Than Ready), SW & GSP, $146,365, the winner also has a weanling sister by Not This Time. Sales history: $130,000 Ylg '22 FTKJUL. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $40,600. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

Curlin Filly Graduates at Ellis

7th-Ellis, $115,500, Msw, 6-17, 3yo/up, f/m, 6f, 1:10.28, ft, 3 3/4 lengths.
ZEITLOS (f, 3, Curlin–Thyme For Roses {Aus} {GSW-Aus, $104,310}, by Redoute's Choice {Aus}), bet down to 1-4, broke with the second draft and settled in a pursuing second behind Uncorked (Uncle Mo), who zipped through a :21.92 quarter. Breathing down the pacesetter's neck leaving the far turn, the chestnut gained command at the quarter pole and drew off to score by 3 3/4 lengths over Uncorked. It's Magic (Good Magic) rounded out the trifecta. A non-starter after losing her rider in her career debut at Churchill last summer, she came home second behind next out winner Batucada (Union Rags) going a mile at that venue in September. Shelved for the remainder of the season, the $350,000 KEESEP yearling purchase returned with another runner-up effort to another next out winner, Scylla (Tapit), at Keelenad Apr. 15. Thyme For Roses also has an unraced juvenile filly by American Pharoah, a yearling colt by Constitution and a filly foal by Speightstown. Lifetime Record: 4-1-2-0, $111,850.
