Flashy Maiden Winners Take on Saratoga Stakes Winners in Loaded Spinaway

'TDN Rising Star' Ways and Means (Practical Joke), one of the more impressive maiden winners this summer at Saratoga, will square off with unbeaten GIII Adirondack S. heroine Brightwork (Outwork) in a deep renewal of Sunday's GI Spinaway S. at the Spa.

Ways and Means, a homebred for Klaravich Stables, earned a field-best 90 Beyer Speed Figure for her geared-down 12 3/4-length debut victory going six furlongs Aug. 6. She'll take on an additional furlong in the Spinaway.

“She's had two easy works since, and she looks fine,” trainer Chad Brown said. “I'm excited to see her run again. We've been training easy.”

Brightwork made it three-for-three for trainer John Ortiz with an impressive win of her own in the 6 1/2-furlong Adirondack Aug. 6. The re-opposing GIII Schuylerville S. winner Becky's Joker (Practical Joke) was a distant seventh that day.

“The thing about her works is that she's only getting better and better,” Ortiz said of Brightwork. “Her heart rate is showing that she's asking for more distance and so we're going in there as confident as can be.”

The field of 10 also includes: Astoria S. winner and Schuylerville third Closing Act (Munnings); the Bill Mott-trained six-length debut winner on opening day Sugar Hi (Twirling Candy); and Alys Beach (Omaha Beach), who defeated next-out runaway winner Life Talk (Gun Runner) by a head on debut July 30.

Sunday's graded stakes action also includes: the GII Caesars Sportsbook Del Mar Derby and the GIII National Thoroughbred League Dueling Grounds Derby at Kentucky Downs.

West VA Derby Winner Red Route One Targets Dueling Grounds Derby

Sunday's GIII West Virginia Derby winner Red Route One (Gun Runner) is expected to make his next start in the National Thoroughbred League Dueling Grounds Derby Sept. 3 at the FanDuel Meet at Kentucky Downs.

The Steve Asmussen-trainee began his career with a victory over the Kentucky Downs grass last year and owner Ron Winchell is a co-managing partner with Marc Falcone in Kentucky Downs and its sister The Mint Gaming Hall properties.

“I think since he had been successful there last year, we have always had our eye on Kentucky Downs to bring him back and run him this year,” said David Fiske, the longtime racing and bloodstock manager for Winchell Thoroughbreds. “Because he was successful and because the purses are what they are. We were hoping to get him into the richest race that made sense, and after winning (the $500,000 West Virginia Derby), the Dueling Grounds Derby looks like a real possibility.”

“It seems like all year long, he's been dropping out the back and the makes a big run, which is kind of like how a lot of turf races are run,” Fiske continued. “Slow early and fast late. Sometimes if there is enough pace in front of you and you can get there and sometimes you don't.”

Another Asmussen-trained graded-stakes winner from last weekend also is likely headed to Kentucky Downs. GIII Troy S. winner Cogburn (Not This Time) is set to contest the GII Ainsworth Turf Sprint, a six-furlong race Sept. 9 whose winner earns a fees-paid spot in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

“I think obviously he has excelled on the turf, being undefeated, and gave me a great feel today,” Asmussen told Saratoga's publicity team after the Troy S. “I feel great to beat the field that we did and now we can think big. We hopefully have a Breeders' Cup horse. We have had one Turf Sprint winner in the past (2011 winner Regally Ready), so hopefully we have another one. We had planned on running here and then Kentucky Downs, but we'll see how we come out of this and figure out what we should do.”

Dueling Grounds Derby winner Kitodan Named HBPA’s Claiming Horse of 2022

Turf specialist Kitodan, who went from being claimed twice last year to winning Kentucky Downs's GIII $750,000 Big Ass Fans Dueling Grounds Derby, has been selected the National HBPA's 2022 Claiming Horse of the Year, the group announced Friday morning.

“We are blessed that we were able to claim that kind of horse compared to where we were just a few years ago,” said western Kentucky-based trainer Eric Foster,  whose wife Brooklyn's Foster Family Racing and partners Doug Miller and Bill Wargel campaign the now 4-year-old colt after claiming him for $80,000 in May. “We're really happy and humble to own him and thank the National HBPA for having this award. Winning Claiming Horse of the Year came out of the blue, but we are honored and so proud of Kitodan. People like us, we can't go to the Keeneland sale, pick the ones we want and hold our hand up until we come home with them.”

Kitodan will be honored at the awards luncheon Tuesday March 7 as part of the annual National Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Conference March 6-10 at the historic Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans's French Quarter.

“Kitodan exemplifies what we look for in the National HBPA Claiming Horse of the Year,” said Todd Mostoller, chair of the National HBPA's awards committee. “He ran at five different tracks on grass, synthetic and dirt and showed that it's better for a racehorse to have a big heart than a big price tag while going from three claiming races to graded-stakes winner. We love these stories. It gives hope to horsemen everywhere that you don't have to buy six- and seven-figure babies to come up with a good horse.”

Kitodan, a $9,000 yearling purchase, made money for his three sets of owners as a 3-year-old. After running in stakes at age 2 for Joker Racing, Kitodan was claimed in his first start of 2022 for $35,000 by trainer Mike Maker on behalf of owners Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher, who campaigned 2021 Claiming Horse of the Year Special Reserve. Kitodan promptly won another optional allowance race at Churchill Downs while again in for the $35,000 claiming price before taking Turfway Park's $200,000 Rushaway S. by 3 3/4 lengths.

When Maker subsequently ran Kitodan for the $80,000 price tag in an optional claiming race at Churchill Downs, Foster was the only one to put in a claim.

The partners recovered their investment just three weeks later when Kitodan won Churchill's $200,000 Audubon S. at 40-1 odds, and went on to win at a mile and five-sixteenths in the Dueling Grounds race.

“It's one of those things you only dream about in racing to come up with a horse like this,” said Miller, of Junction, Ill.  “If we were trying to do this individually, we wouldn't even have thought about it. Partnering gave us the opportunity.”

It was the first graded-stakes victory for the owners and by far the biggest purse.

“There are a lot of people who have a lot more money and investment in the horses and never get this kind of horse,” said Wargel, of Ridgway, Ill., 50 miles from Kentucky's Ellis Park. “We're just old farm boys, me and Doug. Whether we never have another one or that horse never wins another race, he made a dream come true for us.”

Foster said that Kitodan winning Claiming Horse of the Year is a team award that includes his partners who made it possible, along with the trainer's staff and family, who help with the stable.

“We would never want to accept an award like this without thanking Juan Medina,” Foster said of his assistant trainer. “He not only takes care of Kitodan but is also his regular exercise rider. We also very appreciative to (jockey) Geraldo Corrales and his agent Cliff Collier.”

Kitodan is getting time off at Foster's farm in Utica, Ky., near Owensboro, with a major goal being Kentucky Downs' $1 million GII Kentucky Turf Cup in September and hopefully a trip to Santa Anita for the $4 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf, a race he missed last year with a minor leg issue.

“He's probably put on 100, 150 pounds. The time off has really done him some good,” Foster said. “We're hoping to start back with him at the end of February. We'd love to get back to Kentucky Downs.”

Point of Entry’s Kitodan Pulls Off Dueling Grounds Derby Upset

Kitodan, claimed for $80,000 just four starts ago, flew home from out of the clouds to pull the 20-1 upset in the GIII Dueling Grounds Derby on Kentucky Downs's rescheduled card Monday. The bay colt settled near the back of the 12-horse field and was well off the pace as Double Clutch (Optimizer) bowled along on the front end through pedestrian splits. Kitodan was well-held by jockey Gerardo Corrales as the field began to bunch up climbing the hill. He was mired in traffic turning for home and was tipped to the center of the track as Double Clutch began to grudgingly give way to a host of challengers. It was Kitodan moving best of all late, surging clear to an authoritative victory.

Kitodan, winner of the Apr. 2 Rushaway S., was claimed from trainer Mike Maker and Paradise Farm and David Staudacher for $80,000 in his very next start, a third-place effort at Churchill Downs May 15. He won the $200,000 Audubon S. in his first start for the new connections June 4 before a fourth-place effort over the main track in the July 2 American Derby. He was most recently fifth in the Aug. 7 Evan Williams Turf Mile S. at Ellis Park.

Pedigree Notes:

Kitodan is the seventh graded winner for Point of Entry. His dam, Divine Presence, produced fillies by Karakontie (Jpn) in each of the last three years. The mare is a daughter of champion Divine Proportions, who also produced group winner Eightfold Path (Giant's Causeway). She was exported to Japan after selling for $50,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale. She had RNA'd, with Kitodan in utero, for $80,000 at the 2019 Keeneland January sale. Her Karakontie weanling filly sold for $87,323 at this year's JRHA July sale.
