Baffert Breezes Derby Candidates Uncle Chuck, Authentic

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert was a keen observer of workouts by Uncle Chuck and Authentic, two of his many Kentucky Derby prospects, putting in timed breezes at Del Mar near San Diego, Calif.

Uncle Chuck, who'll depart Tuesday for Saratoga and the $1 million Runhappy Travers Stakes next Saturday, covered five furlongs in 1:00.20, co-best of 71 officially timed at the distance.

Clocker Toby Turrell had the son of Uncle Mo going the first half-mile in :49.20 with gallop-outs of 1:12.80 for six furlongs and 1:39.60 for a mile that carried around to the backstretch of the track.

“I'm very happy with the work,” Baffert said. “He's all set now for next week and the big challenge there.”

Authentic went 4 furlongs in :50.20. The Kentucky Derby-bound son of Into Mischief's only loss in five starts came to Honor A.P. in the Santa Anita Derby and he most recently was a wire-to-wire narrow winner of the $1 million TVG.com Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.

Juan Ochoa, in the irons for both Uncle Chuck and Authentic, had a hold on Authentic throughout.

“Just a little maintenance work,” said Baffert.

Another promising 3-year-old to work was Anneau d'Or, who went five furlongs from the gate in 1:01.60. Anneau d'Or was scratched from today's Shared Belief. Trainer Blaine Wright has expressed intentions to ship east for the Ellis Park Derby.

Del Mar Bans Desormeaux

Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux was take off his mount at Del Mar Friday by track management after an alleged altercation earlier in the week. The story was originally reported by the Daily Racing Form.

Del Mar officials did not provide specifics on the alleged incident, but Del Mar’s Josh Rubinstein said, “Our action is not related to racing, but rather is as a result of conduct not consistent with our standards and values.”

A California Horse Racing Board rule allows a racetrack to remove or deny “access for any reason deemed appropriate by the association.” The CHRB’s Mike Marten said, “The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has provided the California Horse Racing Board with the information they relied upon. The CHRB is conducting its own investigation to determine if there were any rule violations that would require CHRB action with respect to Mr. Desormeaux’s license.:

Desormeaux’s agent J.R. Pegram refused to comment.

Trio of Grade I Winners Face Off in Clement Hirsch

A competitive field, highlighted by three top-level scorers, are set to face off Sunday in the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. at Del Mar, a “Win and You’re In” for the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Ce Ce (Elusive Quality) scored back-to-back wins in the Mar. 14 GI Beholder Mile and Apr. 18 GI Apple Blossom H. Favored to repeat in the GII Santa Maria S. back at Santa Anita, she could only manage third behind the re-opposing Fighting Mad (New Year’s Day) and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Hard Not to Love (Hard Spun).

Victorious in the GI La Brea S. in December, Hard Not to Love followed suit with a win in the GII Santa Monica S. in February. The one-eyed bay finished second to Ce Ce after setting the pace in the Beholder Mile, but rallied from off the pace in the Santa Maria last time.

Last year’s Hirsch winner Ollie’s Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) looks to successfully defend her title in this event. Third in the Beholder Mile, the dark bay came up just a head short in the Apple Blossom and finished a close third in a blanket finish in Belmont’s GI Ogden Phipps S. June 13.
