MGISW Dr. Schivel to Stand at Taylor Made After BC Sprint Finale

Dr. Schivel (Violence-Lil Nugget, by Mining for Money), a Grade I winner at both two and three, will retire after making his final start in this weekend's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint and take up stud duty at Taylor Made Stallions in 2024, the farm confirmed Tuesday. A fee will be announced at a later date.

First or second in nine of 14 lifetime starts, the earner of $1,327,100 was campaigned by Red Baron's Barn, Rancho Temescal, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, and William A. Branch, and trained by Mark Glatt.

“We are very excited for the opportunity to stand Dr. Schivel in partnership with Tim Cohen, Dean Reeves, and Bill Branch,” said Taylor Made's Travis White. “It's very special to have a horse that was talented and precocious enough to win a Grade I at two and then come back to win another Grade I as a 3-year-old, beating older horses. Dr. Schivel, who has defeated 13 Grade I winners in his career, has been a sound, extremely consistent horse and his Breeders' Cup Sprint as a 3-year-old was a remarkable performance.”

Winner of the GI Del Mar Futurity at two, he returned at three to add a win in the GI Bing Crosby S. and GII Santa Anita Sprint Championship before rounding out the season with a close-up second in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint. This year, he was third in the Bing Crosby and won the Santa Anita Sprint Championship in his latest start Sept. 30.

White added, “He has remained in Grade I form throughout his racing career, and Mark Glatt said Dr. Schivel has been all class from day one. He is a big, good-looking son of Violence and breeders will really like what they see.”

Bred in Kentucky by William A. Branch and Arnold R. Hill, the 5-year-old is out of Lil Nugget, a half-sister to multiple Grade I winner and millionaire Ultra Blend. Dr. Schivel's first two dams are both Grade I producers.

Dr. Schivel is the second-highest earner for his sire Violence, a Top 10 General Sire in 2023. In addition to Dr. Schivel, Violence is also represented by the reigning Champion 2-Year-Old Male Forte, a four-time Grade I winner. Violence is also the sire of GISW Volatile, who had yearlings sell for $1,150,000 and $700,000 at the Keeneland September Sale. With a current yearling average of $134,973, Volatile has the third-highest yearling of all first-crop sires.

Multiple Graded Stakes Winner Tax Retired

Multiple graded stakes winner Tax (Arch) has been retired from racing. The 7-year-old gelding, who was claimed by trainer and co-owner Danny Gargan for $50,000 out of his debut race in 2018, won the 2019 GII Jim Dandy S. and GIII Withers S., as well as the 2020 GIII Harlan's Holiday S. He earned a trip to the 2019 GI Kentucky Derby with a runner-up effort in the GII Wood Memorial. Fourteenth in the Derby, he returned to finish fourth in the GI Belmont S.

On the board in 11 of 19 races, he won five times and earned $1,102,190.

“We've decided to retire him because it was the right thing to do by the horse,” said Gargan. “He's done enough. We just wanted him to win over the million-dollar mark, and he got well over that.”

In his final career start, Tax was runner-up in the GIII Challenger S. at Tampa Bay Downs in March.

Gargan said Tax has been sent to the farm of Dean Reeves, who co-owned Tax through 2021, and he will be retrained with an eye to a pony career.

“He went to Dean Reeves's farm and we're probably going to break him to be the farm pony next year,” said Gargan. “Maybe he'll come here to Saratoga next year and be our barn pony here.”

Tax retires as the all-time top earner for Gargan.

“He's my favorite horse of all-time,” said Gargan. “He's so pretty and so kind for such a big horse.”

New American Owners of Porta Fortuna Happy to Be Ascot-Bound

When Porta Fortuna (Ire) (Caravaggio {Ire}) won the G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint S. at Naas on Sunday, there was a collective cheer from her new partners across the pond.

Medallion Racing, a racing partnership put together by Taylor Made Farm, bought the two-year-old filly after her five-furlong win at the Curragh in April with partners Barry Fowler, Steve Weston and Dean Reeves. She took the Sunday stakes at Naas in just her second start, her first for the new partners, and now will head to Royal Ascot.

“We traditionally try to buy one to two horses a cycle from Europe,” said Medallion's Phillip Shelton. “We find that the prices are a little more reasonable, and you can find a horse with Grade I potential. We bought a filly named Papilio (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) last year from Europe who won the Grade II Appalachian at Keeneland in April.”

“We loved the way this filly quickened on debut,” Shelton continued. “She was a bit green and never looked like she was going to win until she made up a couple of lengths in what felt like a few strides. The group stakes schedule gives you an immediate shot at group black type. In America there isn't a graded stakes for two-year-old fillies on grass until September.”

Originally owned by Annemarie O'Brien, Porta Fortuna stayed with her son, trainer Donnacha, despite the switch in owners.

“We work with Mark McStay of Avenue Bloodstock and we started discussing if there was a deal to be done. Luckily, we were able to get a deal done, and were happy to keep the filly with Donnacha,” said Shelton. “We couldn't do any of it without our partners who trust us to put them in on the right horses. Our Medallion partners have been great, as well as Steve Weston and Barry Fowler, who are two of our biggest supporters, and partners on Papilio as well. This is the first horse we have had with Dean Reeves, but he has been a Taylor Made customer in the past. All of our yearlings are broken at Two Springs Farm, of Chetley and Nellie Breeden's. Dean owns the farm and we got to spend some time together this winter talking about trying to find the right horse to partner on.”

“We thought she was a nice filly, but obviously you never expect to win a Group race with a filly that's had just one run,” O'Brien said. “It's nice to see her handle the step up in class well. She has a really good pedigree; back along there are a lot of good horses in it.”

As to which race they'll target at Ascot, “We'll leave that up to Donnacha,” said Shelton. “The race today was a stiff six furlongs and she quickened really well, so the Group 3 Albany could suit. She probably has enough pace for the Group 2 Queen Mary if we wanted to drop her back, but we will let Donnacha guide us on the best spot.”

Said O'Brien, “If she goes it will probably be for the Albany as she looked to get a stiff six furlongs here well. She handles all kinds of ground, so I wouldn't be worried either way. The American partners, they liked her, they invested in her and they were dead right. She's a valuable filly now.”

Added Shelton, “We are very excited. Royal Ascot is such a special meeting, and should be on everyone's racing bucket list. We'll be going this year with a filly we think has a shot to run very well.”
