GSW Il Miracolo Tops List Of 2023 FTHA Champions

GSW Il Miracolo (Gun Runner) led the 2023 list of Florida-based champions, as he was named the top 3-year-old colt by the Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (FTHA), according to a press release from 1/ST Racing on Thursday.

The FTHA annually recognizes horses who compete year-round in South Florida. All winners raced and won during the non-championship meets from April to November.

Based at Gulfstream with trainer Antonio Sano, Il Miracolo amassed $465,025 in winnings last year. He is joined by Time Passage (Tunwoo), who was named Florida's champion 3-year-old filly after winning five of nine starts in 2023.

Top 2-year-old male honors went to Bentornato (Valiant Minister), who has raced exclusively at Gulfstream where he reeled off four consecutive wins, while R Harper Rose (Khozan) was selected top 2-year-old filly after she won three of four starts.

Champion older male honors went to GSW/GISP Dean Delivers (Cajun Breeze). The top older female was GSW Three Witches (Into Mischief).

Amstrong (Tapwrit), winner of three stakes races, and Battle Cry (Prospective), who went five-for-nine, were named top Tapeta colt and filly, respectively.

Elite Power Noses Out Gunite In Vanderbilt, Keeps Win Streak Going

Now, that's how you celebrate a birthday.

Champion sprinter Elite Power (Curlin) came charging down the sealed, sloppy stretch at Saratoga to nail Gunite (Gun Runner) by a head in Saturday's GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. on Hall of Famer Bill Mott's 70th birthday.

Racing over a wet surface for the first time, the even-money favorite was sixth though an opening quarter in :22.64. He was tipped out by Irad Ortiz, Jr. approaching the quarter pole and set his sights on the aforementioned slight second choice, who enjoyed first run and was beginning to get away. Elite Power was just getting started, however, and kept on motoring home to get there in dramatic fashion to win his eighth straight.

“It looked like Gunite certainly had the jump on him turning for home,” Mott said. “Great, great, great effort on this horse. He's a big, strong horse, heavy horse. He handled (the off track) well, but it doesn't have to be his best surface and I think it's great. There was that question beforehand. You just don't know. It's like trying a new distance for the first time. When you try a new track surface, you just don't know what's going to happen. But class came through.”

Elite Power's winning streak also includes last term's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland Nov. 5, the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint in Saudi Arabia Feb. 25 and the GII True North S. at Belmont Park June 10.

“For him to put up a streak like this against top competition just really boils down to him being a really good horse,” Mott said. They don't do it by accident.”

Mott added that Elite Power would likely target the GI Forego S. at Saratoga Aug. 26.

Pedigree Notes:

Elite Power, a $900,000 KEESEP yearling purchase by Juddmonte, is one of 54 graded winners, 20 at the Grade I level, for the mighty Curlin.

Broodmare sire Vindication, the unbeaten winner of the 2002 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Arlington, is responsible for 12 graded winners, six at the top level.

Elite Power is bred on the same Curlin/Vindication cross as GI Preakness S. winner Exaggerator. Elite Power's dam Broadway's Alibi, a MGSW & GI Kentucky Oaks runner-up and Robsham homebred, brought $2.15 million from Alpha Delta Stables while in foal to Smart Strike at the 2013 KEENOV sale. Broadway's Alibi is also represented by a Curlin colt of 2021.

Elite Power's fourth dam is champion 2-year-old filly and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Eliza (Mt. Livermore). This is also the family of GISW and young sire Dialed In (Mineshaft).

“(The late) Prince Khalid was the one that wanted to win the Kentucky Derby,” Juddmonte's Garrett O'Rourke said. “We bought this guy by Curlin out of a mare that was second in the Kentucky Oaks. That was our dream. But this is a very, very good consolation prize. That was Prince Khalid's idea and dream at the time, but now we've moved on to his sons who are taking a tremendous interest and they're the ones carrying this forward. I'm thanking them for the point of view of Juddmonte and I think it's great for the whole legacy of Juddmonte that they're carrying it through.”

Noted Florida Breeder Gilbert Campbell Passes Away

Gilbert G. Campbell, co-owner with wife Marilyn, of Stonehedge Farm South near Williston, Fla,. died Thursday at Lowell General Hospital in Massachusetts, following a brief illness.

Campbell was 91. Besides his wife Marilyn, he is survived by his son Gary Campbell who told Lowell Sun reporter, “Despite his remarkable success in business, he was incredibly humble. He was such a down-to-earth person who would treat the janitor with the same respect he would treat the CEO.”

Campbell, a successful businessman in several industries is most remembered for his stellar accomplishments and decades of dedication to the Florida Thoroughbred industry. Longtime Stonehedge Farm South manager, Larry King, commented “He loved his horses and we inspected them all every time they (the Campbells) came down, and he would say “I can't wait to see these run.” Marilyn is very involved and loves the horses . . . and his wishes which he had told me many times was for it to keep right on going forward.”

Leading Florida breeder and former president of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association, Gilbert G. Campbell was a multiple graded stakes-winning owner who won 461 races with earnings of more than $13 million under his name and then an additional $6,078,818 under Stonehedge LLC. In 2013, the top horseman ranked 75th by earnings in North America and was among the top 100 by wins in 2001, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2001, and 2013 (since 2000 *Equibase).

Campbell's top homebreds include millionaire multiple graded stakes winner, Grade 1-placed Blazing Sword; graded stakes winners Ivanavinalot (Grade 2 Bonnie Miss Stakes and dam of two-time filly champion Songbird); Watch Me Go (Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby); Friel's for Real (Grade 3 Pimlico Breeders' Cup Distaff Handicap); etc.

Among 15 Stonehedge winners that have scored in the 'Tradition-rich' Florida Sire Series are most recently, sons of Cajun Breeze (standing at Stonehedge Farm South), Cajun's Magic and Dean Delivers, who brought home the exacta for owner/breeder Stonehedge LLC, in the FTBOA Florida Sire Dr. Fager S. at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., July 31.

It goes without saying, Gilbert G. Campbell will go down in racing's history books as one of Florida's legendary horsemen.
