Into Mischief’s Dayoutoftheoffice Stamps BC Ticket in Frizette

Dayoutoftheoffice (Into Mischief), away since a smashing success in the GIII Schuylerville S. at Saratoga July 16, picked up right where she left off to earn an automatic berth to the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in Saturday’s GI Frizette S. at Belmont. Co-owned by her trainer Tim Hamm and breeder Siena Farms, the daughter of the nation’s hottest stallion was an easy debut winner at Gulfstream all the way back on May 14 in her only other start. Back as the second choice at 29-10 behind GI Spinaway S. romper Vequist (Nyquist), the dark bay traveled strongly in the bridle from second through splits of :22.94 and :46.41 before taking over from stopping frontrunner Joy’s Rocket (Anthony’s Cross) and opening up entering the lane. Vequist tried to make a race of it in the run to the line, but Dayoutoftheoffice kept finding to hold sway by two lengths before galloping out very strongly. It was another 10 1/4 lengths back to longshot Cilla (California Chrome).

“When you ride fast horses, it makes it easy for you,” said hot-handed jockey Junior Alvarado, who piloted the winners of the GI Belmont Derby Invitational S., GII Beldame S. and GII Gallant Bloom H. last weekend. “I thought [the pace] was going to be a little more contested and I was going to stalk, but I felt like I was in control of the race from where I was. I knew I had the horse in front of me [measured], so I just made sure my filly got into a nice rhythm and at the same time keep everybody where I wanted them to be. It worked out great today.”

The Frizette was the first highest-level victory for veteran horseman Tim Hamm. As for the reason for the time off after the Schuyverville, he said:

“She’s a big, scopey filly and I wanted to have some horse for the end of the year. The plan was to have a fresh horse for this time of the year. We wanted to just train her a little lightly and have her fresh for the fall run. Everything went according to plan.

“When you put a plan together that works–the team of Siena Farm and myself and all our assistants–you feel vindicated. We all thought this filly was special when she won at 4 1/2 [furlongs] because we knew she would be able to get longer than that. She was able to get the job done today.”

Hamm confirmed Dayoutoftheoffice would now point for the Breeders’ Cup.

Pedigree Notes:

Into Mischief’s tally of Grade I winners now sits at eight. He is the leading general sire in North America this year thanks to the exploits of the likes of GI Kentucky Derby hero Authentic, brilliant MGISW sophomore filly Gamine, et al and his yearling sales figures last month were equally staggering. His fee was bumped from $175,000 to $225,000 by Spendthrift Farm for 2021.

Dayoutoftheoffice is the second Grade I winner out of an Indian Charlie mare (Mitole {Eskendereya}) and is bred on the same cross as last week’s impressive Gallant Bloom heroine Frank’s Rockette (Into Mischief). Siena claimed dam Gottahaveadream for $50,000 while she was a maiden in at Keeneland almost exactly eight years ago. She graduated at Turfway a few months later before being retired to the breeding shed. The half-sister to GISW Here Comes Ben (Street Cry {Ire}) hails from the family of top-level winners Daredevil, Albertus Maximus and Race the Wild Wind. She produced a Carpe Diem filly in 2019 and a Bolt d’Oro colt in 2020 before being bred back to the Siena co-campaigned Always Dreaming.

Spa Notes: Country Grammer Possible for Runhappy Travers

Paul Pompa, Jr.’s GIII Peter Pan S. hero Country Grammer (Tonalist) could make his next appearance in the GI Runhappy Travers S. at Saratoga Aug. 8, the owner told the NYRA notes team Friday.

“If he comes back well, the Travers would be the logical spot. It’s coming back a little soon but so far, so good,” Pompa, Jr. said. “We always have liked this horse, but the COVID-19 situation has created gaps, just due to lack of racing.”

A $60,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $450,000 OBS April breezer, Country Grammer broke his maiden going nine furlongs over the Aqueduct last November and resumed with an even fifth to Ete Indien (Summer Front) in the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. Feb. 29. He was a wide-trip third in Belmont allowance company June 4, but enjoyed a smoother run in transit in Thursday’s Peter Pan, sneaking through at the rail turning for home before outlasting ‘TDN Rising Star’ Carocaro (Uncle Mo).

Country Grammer became the second graded winner for his second-crop sire in the Peter Pan. The other, Tonalist’s Shape, is the morning-line favorite for Saturday’s GI CCA Oaks at Saratoga.

Dayoutoftheoffice Likely to Reappear During Meet…

Dayoutoftheoffice (Into Mischief), who gave trainer Tim Hamm his first Saratoga stakes winner when upsetting Thursday’s GIII Schuylerville S. at odds of 19-1, is likely to contest one or both of the graded races for juvenile fillies at the Spa over the course of the next six weeks.

“The [GII] Adirondack S. [Aug. 12, 6 1/2 furlongs] is a possibility and the [GI] Spinaway [Sept. 6, seven furlongs] is possible. I don’t know if we would do both or [just] one of the two. But we’ll probably run her up back there at least once.”

Owned by Hamm in partnership with breeder Siena Farm, Dayoutoftheoffice–who led home an Into Mischief exacta–posted a front-running, 4 3/4-length debut victory over 4 1/2 furlongs at Gulfstream May 14. Hamm was confident that his filly would relish the extra real estate in the Schuylerville.

“It’s the kind of read we had on her training up to her first race. We thought the 4 1/2 [furlongs] might be too short for her,” he said. “But she got that down, and I was optimistic she wanted to run farther than that. I believe if she stretches out, she’ll be able to handle that as well. If you don’t look good there, it closes a lot of doors. But if you win, you have options open, and you just want to lay out a good schedule now and get her where she needs to be.”

Tap It To Win Aiming For Jerkens…

Live Oak Plantation’s Tap It To Win (Tapit), who defeated GIII Peter Pan S. hero Country Grammer in the aforementioned June 4 allowance ahead of a low-odds fifth to Tiz the Law (Constitution) in the GI Belmont S. 16 days later, breezed a half-mile in :48.09 Monday morning and will shorten back up for the seven-furlong GI H. Allen Jerkens S. presented by Runhappy at Saratoga Aug. 1.

“He’s looking good. We’re going to the Allen Jerkens with him and he should fit well in there,” said Jamie Begg, assistant to trainer Mark Casse. “I think the cutback to seven-eighths is good and we’ll be able to sit off the speed and make a run.”

Dayoutoftheoffice Posts 19-1 Upset In Opening Day Schuylerville

Graded stakes action at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., kicked off on Thursday with a 19-1 upset when Dayoutoftheoffice made the most out of a trip to the Spa in taking the 102nd running of the Grade 3, $100,000 Schuylerville over the main track.

Trained by Timothy Hamm, who co-owns the dark bay juvenile daughter of Into Mischief with Siena Farm, Dayoutoftheoffice arrived at the six-furlong event for 2-year-old fillies off a 4 3/4-length maiden triumph on debut traveling 4 1/2-furlongs at Gulfstream Park.

Piloted by Junior Alvarado, Dayoutoftheoffice broke sharply from post 7 and tracked in third to the outside of frontrunners Make Mischief and Hara with the former establishing command, leading the field through an opening quarter-mile in 22.29 seconds on the main track rated fast.

At the top of the stretch, Hara had dropped out of contention while Dayoutoftheoffice began making her winning move with Make Mischief up front to catch. Approaching the three-sixteenths pole, Dayoutoftheoffice took command with Hopeful Princess making a late bid to the far outside. But there was no catching Dayoutoftheoffice, who drew away to a six-length victory in a final time of 1:10.43 over Make Mischief who was another length to the better of Hopeful Princess.

Completing the full order of finish were Hara, Queen Arella and Quinoa Tifah.

Beautiful Memories, the 1-2 post time favorite, was pulled up around the far turn and walked home under her own power. Sunny Isle Beach was scratched.

“Last time in the first sixteenth of a mile, it took her a little bit to get going, so my goal today was to get a good position,” Alvarado said. “I knew she would handle the distance fine today. She broke good and put me in a good spot and I was for sure a smiling person the whole way around. I knew what I had under me and she responded very well when I asked her turning for home.”

The victory marked a third career graded stakes triumph for Hamm, who had not struck gold at such caliber since winning Keeneland's Grade 3 Appalachian with Afternoon Stroll in 2009.

Hamm said he was hoping for his filly to be sitting just off the pace, and he got exactly what he wanted.

“We knew there would be a lot of speed, but I thought if we could be third or fourth early, we'd have a big chance. When I saw her coming into the turn laying third, I thought we had a shot,” Hamm said. “We got the trip we were hoping to get. In the paddock, he [jockey Junior Alvarado] said to me, 'Into the turn if you could pick a spot for me to be, where would that be?' I said third right outside the speed. When I saw him laying there, I said, 'Wow we're still alive.'”

After banking $55,000 in victory, Dayoutoftheoffice enhanced her lifetime earnings to $79,000 and is unbeaten in two starts. She rewarded her backers in payouts of $41.60 for a $2 win bet.

Bred in Kentucky by co-owner Siena Farm, Dayoutoftheoffice is out of the Indian Charlie broodmare Gottahaveadream.

Jockey Jose Ortiz, aboard beaten favorite Beautiful Memories, said that his filly had a small cut on her right front leg.

“She stumbled out of the gate and was traveling OK, but she was getting a lot of dirt in her face,” Ortiz said. “Going into the turn, she switched leads and I noticed she wasn't traveling well, so I decided to take care of her. It was a tough decision to make. She had a small cut on her right front. I don't think it's serious.”

Live racing returns on Friday afternoon with a 10-race card which features the $85,000 De La Rose for fillies and mares going one mile over the inner turf and the $85,000 Shine Again for fillies and mares going seven furlongs over the main track. First post is 1:10 p.m. Eastern.

Into Mischief Filly All Business in Schuylerville, Leads Home One-Two for Leading Sire

Tim Hamm and Siena Farms’ Dayoutoftheoffice (Into Mischief) was completely dismissed at 19-1 in the GIII Schuylerville S., the first graded stakes of the Saratoga meet Thursday, but she will not be overlooked again after a dominant victory.

Ignored by the bettors despite a 4 3/4-length debut graduation at Gulfstream May 14, the dark bay stalked from a two-wide third as Make Mischief (Into Mischief) led Hara (Hard Spun) through an opening quarter in :22.29. Inching closer as the half went up in :45.57, Dayoutoftheoffice collared the pacesetter in early stretch and charged clear with fury for an emphatic six-length score. Make Mischief, a 16-1 shot, held second and Hopeful Princess (Not This Time) completed the trifecta. Heavily favored Beautiful Memories (Hard Spun) stumbled at the start and was pulled up approaching the far turn.
