Mares Confirmed in Foal to GISW Higher Power

Darby Dan Farm's Higher Power (Medaglia d'Oro–Alternate, by Seattle Slew) confirmed the Grade I winner's first mares are in foal. Confirmed in foal, Gold Club (Majestic Warrior), out of the Touch Gold mare Be Golden, was the first mare he bred Feb. 11. She is owned by Brandywine Farm. Also confirmed in foal is Talking Audrey (Thunder Gulch–Diversa, by Tabasco Cat), a half-sister to Grade I winner Love Theway Youare, who was bred Feb. 12. Talking Audrey is owned by RAH Bloodstock.

A 5 1/4-length winner of the 2019 GI Pacific Classic at Del Mar, the half-brother to MGSW Alternation was a five-time winner of more than $1.5 million. In addition to his Pacific Classic victory, he also placed in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic, GI Hollywood Gold Cup, GI Awesome Again S., and the GII San Diego H.

Who’s Your Pick? Derek MacKenzie

As we approach the end of the calendar, we turn our attention to the incoming sire class of 2021. We asked several judges who their favorite incoming sire is for next year and if there are any other stallions, new or otherwise, that have caught their eye as under-the-radar picks.

DEREK MACKENZIE, Vinery Sales

Higher Power (Medaglia d’Oro), $10,000, Darby Dan

My favorite new sire for 2021 is Higher Power. Physically, he’s just phenomenal and his pedigree is hands down the best this year for the new sires. I also think he is incredible value at $10,000, where I thought he would probably have a $12,500 or $15,000 stud fee factoring in that he’s a Grade I winner by Medaglia d’Oro with that tremendous female family.

Mucho Macho Man (Macho Uno), $7,500, Hill ‘n’ Dale

For under-the-radar stallions with outstanding value this year, I would have to go with Mucho Macho Man at $7,500. What he’s done with the small crop sizes at the racetrack is outstanding– including two Grade I winners. I also love his offspring physically, as they always have great balance to their frame with plenty of length to their hip just like him. His yearlings all just look so athletic and for him being such a big horse (over 17 hands), that is a credit to him that neither he nor his babies are awkward in any way.

Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro) [Spendthrift] is another one I really like for value at $15,000 for this year. I’ve loved his babies physically and he’s got a big chance to hit when they hit the racetrack as he ticks all the boxes, including being a good 2-year-old himself.

Do you have a favorite incoming sire pick for 2021 or a stallion that you think might be under-the-radar next year? Email the TDN’s Katie Ritz at katieritz@thoroughbreddailynews.com to give your response.

Darby Dan Releases 2021 Stallion Roster, Fees

Darby Dan Farm has set 2021 stud fees for its roster of 12 stallions that will stand the upcoming breeding season, led by Dialed In (Mineshaft), who will stand for $15,000 S&N, down from $20,000 a season ago.

The roster also features Tapiture (Tapit), Klimt (Quality Road), and GI Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Higher Power (Medaglia d’Oro), new for 2021, who will each stand for $10,000 S&N. GI Kentucky Derby winner Country House (Lookin At Lucky), also new for 2021, Flameaway (Scat Daddy), and Copper Bullet (More Than Ready) will stand for $7,500 S&N, while Tale of Ekati (Tale of the Cat) and Bee Jersey (Jersey Town) will stand for $5,000; rounding out the roster will be Sky Kingdom (Empire Maker) at $2,500, S&N, Tale of Verve (Tale of Ekati) at $2,000 S&N, and Dolphus (Lookin At Lucky) who will stand for private treaty.

Dialed In, leading freshman sire of 2016 and a perennial leading sire of his crop ever since, is represented in 2020 by GI American Pharoah S. winner Get Her Number. Tapiture’s Hopeful Growth was a four-length winner of this year’s GII Monmouth Oaks and placed in the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. He is also represented by ‘TDN Rising Star’ Premier Star, winner of the Jersey Shore S. and placed in the GII Amsterdam S. A top-five first-crop sire of 2019 by earnings and second-ranked first-crop sire by winners with 27, Tapiture leads second-crop sires by winners (68) and is second in black-type winners (five) and black-type horses (12).

Klimt, Quality Road’s fastest Grade I-winning 2-year-old, saw first-crop yearlings sell for $160,000, $120,000, $115,000, etc. this year. Klimt was a powerful winner of the GI Del Mar Futurity, where he ran seven furlongs in 1:21.80, marking the second-fastest time since 2004, behind only American Pharoah.

Higher Power, a dominant 5 1/4-length winner of the 2019 GI Pacific Classic at Del Mar, has earned more than $1.5 million heading into this year’s Breeders’ Cup and boasts graded stakes placings in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, GI Gold Cup S., GI Awesome Again S. and GII San Diego H.

New to the roster, Country House earned more than $2.1 million, and in addition to his Derby victory, finished second to eventual Classic winner War of Will in the GII Risen Star S. at Fair Grounds and was third in the GI Arkansas Derby.

Darby Dan will once again be offering various incentive programs in 2021 to provide value to breeders, including Profit Protection, Share the Upside, Black-Type Bonanza, and Goldmine 20/20 Match Program.

Tapit Daughter of Winter Memories Successful in Eventful Saratoga Unveiling

2nd-Saratoga, $72,000, Msw, 8-9, 2yo, f, 1 1/16mT, 1:44.94, fm.
SEASONS (f, 2, Tapit–Winter Memories {MGISW, $1,268,100}, by El Prado {Ire}) got the job done in her much-anticipated first start Sunday, but not without plenty of drama. The regally bred filly showed a very upbeat worktab leading up to this unveiling, punctuated by a :48.79 bullet over the Oklahoma turf Aug. 3 (XBTV Video), and was backed down to 4-5 from an already telling 9-5 morning line prediction. Away in good order, the chestnut took up a stalking spot along the fence as second timer Frankel At Ascot (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) showed the way through poky fractions. Seasons looked like she might run into traffic trouble as the field bunched up turning for home, but she pushed her way through a seam outside of the pacesetter in midstretch. Just as she was striking the front, Frankel At Ascot veered in abruptly, broke through the temporary rail and lost rider Tyler Gaffalione. Still with her mind on business, Seasons boxed on to fend off longshot Ice Queen (Cairo Prince) by a neck. Both Frankel At Ascot and Gaffalione reportedly escaped serious injury. The winner is a full to Winter Sunset, MSW & MGSP, $248,873. Her uber talented dam was a debut winner here in 2010 and concluded her career with a victory in the local GI Diana S. two years later for Darby Dan’s Phillips Racing Partnership and trainer Jimmy Toner. Winter Memories, herselfa daughter of MGSW Memories of Silver (Silver Hawk), produced a Union Rags colt in 2019 and a Quality Road filly earlier this term before being bred back to American Pharoah. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $39,600. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
