Soloshot An Impressive Saratoga Winner For Freshman Stallion Solomini

1st-Saratoga, $88,000, (S), Msw, 8-27, 2yo, f, 5 1/2f (off turf), 1:05.71, ft, 7 3/4 lengths.
SOLOSHOT (f, 2, Solomini–Sweet Queen {MSP}, by Twirling Candy) breezed in :10.1 and brought a final bid of $290,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale. A main-track only entry who drew in as the race came off the turf, the 5-2 favorite led every step of the running, showing the way through early fractions of :22.95 and :46.64. Set down at the top of the stretch, she extended her margin at will and won easily by 7 3/4 lengths over fellow MTO entry Fast and Frisky (Solomini) to top an exacta for her freshman sire. Solomini's (by Curlin) third winner, Soloshot was produced by the first of four consecutive visits to the New York-based stallion. Gun Runner Colt Breaks Through in Smarty Jones

Il Miracolo (c, 3, Gun Runner–Tapit's World, by Tapit), a longshot second in Saratoga's Curlin S. July 21, broke through with a career high in Tuesday's GIII Smarty Jones S. at Parx.

Drawn widest of all in post eight, the 7-2 chance was hustled from his outside draw and raced three wide around the clubhouse turn. He sat a perfect, stalking trip from an outside third, made his move on the far turn, kicked for home as the one to catch, and, despite drifting out badly down the lane,  was never in any serious danger late. It was three lengths back to Cagliostro (Upstart) in second; Daydreaming Boy (Goldencents) was third.

A well-beaten sixth in both the GII Fountain of Youth S. Mar. 4 and GI Curlin Florida Derby Apr. 1, Il Miracolo followed an optional claiming win at Gulfstream Park May 11 with a seventh-place finish in the GI Belmont S. June 10. He finished 3 1/4 lengths behind the GI Travers S.-bound Scotland (Good Magic) in the Curlin.

Il Miracolo becomes the 14th graded/20th stakes winner for leading young sire Gun Runner. The Gun Runner over Tapit cross is also responsible for GISW Society and GSWs Wicked Halo, Red Route One and Disarm. The winner's dam Tapit's World, a $175,000 purchase by Willow Oaks Farm at the 2015 FTKNOV sale, is also responsible for the 2-year-old colt Mister Cruiser (Catalina Cruiser) and a Vekoma filly of this year. She was bred back to Vekoma for 2024.

Cody’s Wish Among Godolphin Team Plans Outlined

Godolphin's Cody's Wish (Curlin), third in the nine-furlong GI Whitney Aug. 5 at Saratoga, is expected to return to one-turn racing this fall at the Belmont at the Big A meet, according to Michael Banahan, Director of Bloodstock for Godolphin.

A potential landing spot for the 5-year-old could be the seven-furlong GII Vosburgh S. for 3-year-olds Sept. 30, a “Win and You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint in November at Santa Anita.

Banahan indicated that the Vosburgh could also be used as a steppingstone to the GI Dirt Mile, which he won last year by a head over Cyberknife.

“We were hoping he would run better in the Whitney and it was a great opportunity to figure it out,” said Banahan. “So, we took our chance and obviously it didn't work out as well as we'd hoped for. But, he's come out of the race well and we'll regroup and try and to make him a repeat winner in the Dirt Mile. I think we'll keep him in New York and potentially run him in the Vosburgh.”

Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the homebred raced beyond one mile for the first time since July 2021 in the Whitney and attempted his usual closing kick under regular pilot Junior Alvarado, but finished 10 lengths back of the victorious White Abarrio. That ended a six-race win streak that included the Dirt Mile, GI Churchill Downs S., GI Metropolitan H. and last year's GI Forego S.

A winner for Godolphin on the Whitney Day undercard in a tragedy-marred renewal of the GI Test S., Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief) may mark her return in Parx Racing's GI Cotillion S. Sept. 23.

“She came out of the race very well and we found out in the race that the seven-furlong pace was a little too fast for her,” said Banahan. “She stayed on well in the race and came out of it well. Nothing is set in stone yet and we're guided by the filly, but we'll have a look at the Cotillion. It's a significant race and it's the last race at a distance for the 3-year-old fillies.”

Trained by Brendan Walsh, Pretty Mischievous cut back from a win in the one-turn 1 1/16-mile GI Acorn S. in June at Belmont and rallied strongly from four lengths off the pace in the Test to put her head down over Clearly Unhinged.

Banahan added that Godolphin plans to send out both Matareya (Pioneerof the Nile) and Caramel Swirl (Union Rags) in the GI Ballerina H. Aug. 26, a “Win and You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Matareya, a dual Grade I-winner trained by Brad Cox, was last seen finishing third in the GIII Chicago S. at Ellis Park, while Caramel Swirl, trained by Mott, has not been seen since finishing third in the GII Bed o' Roses S. June 17 at Belmont.

“Matareya is in good shape and Brad is very happy with where she is at the moment,” said Banahan. “Caramel Swirl will probably run in there as well, so we'll see if one of them can win it.”

Liam’s Map’s Deterministic Is Sire’s Newest ‘Rising Star’ at Saratoga

Displaying some single-minded ways in the post parade, where he proved himself quite the handful, St Elias Stable, Ken Langone, C. Steven Duncker and Vicarage Stable's Deterministic (Liam's Map–Giulio's Jewel, by Speightstown) was off slowly on top of his pre-race antics, but he overcame it all to relentlessly grind his way to 'TDN Rising Star' honors in Saturday's fifth race from Saratoga.

Clearly last from the stalls, the dark bay colt lingered at the back of the field for a time, then was content to tuck into sixth as Informed Patriot (Hard Spun) set the pace in advance of 24-1 outside Hurricane Nelson (Khozan). Appearing to be climbing into the dirt, Deterministic was taken out three wide, was more settled on the turn and began to zero in on the leaders nearing the stretch. As many as six paths off the inside as the field hit the top of the stretch, the colt bumped soundly with 6-5 favorite Eliminate (Curlin), but athletically regained his stride and steamed down the center of the track to nail Hurricane Nelson in the shadow of the wire to score at odds just north of 7-2. Eliminate stayed on for third.

Deterministic is the three winner from three of racing age for the three-time winning Giulio's Jewel and his hammer price of $625,000 was the most expensive of the 58 (75 through the ring) of his sire's progeny reported as sold in 2022. Most of the action in Deterministic's pedigree is in the third dam, the stakes-winning Amelia. A half-sister to the talented European sprinter Bertolini (Danzig) and SW Alchemilla (Deputy Minister), she is the dam of seven winners, among them five full black-type scorers, including GSW & GISP Kindergarden Kid (Dynaformer); MGSW & GISP Rainha da Bateria (Broken Vow); Japanese group winners Rabbit Run (Tapit) and Asakusa Genki (Stormy Atlantic); GSW Assateague (Stormy Atlantic); and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up He's Had Enough (Tapit). Amelia's dam Aquilegia (Alydar) was a full-sister to champion Althea. Giulio's Jewel, a half-sister to the GII Lake Placid S. runner-up Duff One (Harlan's Holiday), passed away after foaling a Frosted filly in 2022.

Deterministic is the third 'Rising Star' for Liam's Map.
