An all-stakes cross-breed Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday paid $699.25 for selecting all five winners for the 50-cent wager. The total pool was $60,003. The wager, which featured thoroughbred racing from historic Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., also encompassed two prestigious harness races from the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J.

Thoroughbreds started the action when State of Rest won the $1 million Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational to capture the second leg of NYRA's Turf Triple series for 3-year-olds in Race 9 at the Spa. The Irish-bred State of Rest, trained by Joseph O'Brien and ridden by Hall of Famer John Velazquez, topped Solider Rising by one length in the 1 3/16-mile contest on the Mellon turf course in a final time of 1:53.35. Off at 21-1, State of Rest returned $44.20 on a $2 win wager.

Monmouth Park, located in Oceanport, New Jersey, hosted the $100,000 Tyro for juveniles going five furlongs on the turf in Race 12. Her World, an Irish bred trained by Wesley Ward, romped by six lengths as the even-money favorite, paying $3.80. Under jockey Paco Lopez, Her World completed the course in :56.62 seconds.

A unique wrinkle to the Cross County Pick 5 came in the third leg when standardbreds took center stage with the $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks in Race 14 at the Meadowlands. The prestigious race for 3-year-old fillies saw heavy favorite Bella Bellini win in rein to driver Dexter Dunn. The R. Nifty Norman trainee paid $3 to win in capturing the race for trotters.

Saratoga's feature, the 94th running of the $1 million Grade 1 Whitney in Race 10, saw Knicks Go surge to the front and go wire-to-wire to best the five-horse field under jockey Joel Rosario, who notched his second career Whitney victory. Trained by Brad Cox, Knicks Go won by 4 1/2 lengths as the favorite, paying $4.10, and hit the wire in the 1 1/8-mile contest in 1:47.70.

Standardbreds closed out the sequence when another favorite – Captain Corey – won the 96th running of the $1 million Hambletonian for 3-year-olds in Race 15 at the Meadowlands. Trainer and driver Ake Svanstedt led Captain Corey [$4.60] to victory in the one-mile stakes for trotters.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on track, on ADW platforms, and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Nets $26,699 For Winning Tickets

Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5 featuring action from Saratoga Race Course, Woodbine Race Track, and Monmouth Park, paid $26,699 for selecting all five winners for the 50-cent wager. The total pool was $125,652.

Four graded stakes comprised the wager, starting with the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks for 3-year-old fillies in Race 10 at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. Leader of the Band, a 10-1 selection for trainer John Servis, posted a two-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile contest, hitting the wire in 1:43.44 under jockey Frankie Pennington. Leader of the Band returned $22.60 on a $2 win wager.

Lexitonian provided an even bigger upset in the $350,000 Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt in Saratoga's Race 8. The Jack Sisterson trainee, off at 34-1, dueled Special Reserve from the top of the stretch before kicking away under jockey Jose Lezcano for a half-length win, paying $70. Lexitonian, the biggest price in the nine-horse field, completed the six-furlong sprint in 1:09.38.

Woodbine Race Track in Toronto, Ontario got in on the action when Souper Munnings, trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, bested Grey Seal by a neck to win a seven-furlong turf allowance for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in Race 9. Souper Munnings, ridden by Patrick Husbands, won as the favorite, completing the course in 1:23.15 and returning $7.90.

Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., completed the final two legs, starting with Essential Quality's half-length win over Keepmeinmind in the $600,000 Grade 2 Jim Dandy for 3-year-olds going 1 1/8 miles in Race 9. Essential Quality, who entered off a win in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes last out, set himself up for a potential start in the $1.25 million Grade 1 Runhappy Travers on August 28 with his Jim Dandy score under jockey Luis Saez. The defending Champion 2-Year-Old paid $2.80 as the favorite, notching a final time of 1:49.92.

Cross Border closed the wager with a 1 1/4-length win in the $250,000 Grade 2 Bowling Green for 4-year-olds and up on the inner turf in Race 10. The Mike Maker trainee repeated as the Bowling Green winner, with Saez aboard, as the son of English Channel won the 1 3/8-mile marathon in 2:16.36. Cross Border paid $14.40.

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Action From Saratoga, Woodbine, Monmouth

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring four graded stakes, with racing action at Saratoga Race Course, Woodbine Racetrack and Monmouth Park.

Monmouth will start the action with the Grade 3, $250,000 Monmouth Oaks for sophomore fillies going 1 1/16 miles in Race 10 at 4:33 p.m. Eastern. Midnight Obsession, the runner-up in the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks on July 3, will look to earn her first stakes win after back-back second-place finishes following two straight wins to begin her career for trainer John Servis. Her stablemate, Leader of the Band, was third in the 1 1/16-mile Delaware Oaks, giving Servis two formidable contenders. Orbs Baby Girl, sixth in the Delaware Oaks, will also compete for trainer Anthony Margotta, Jr. Allworthy, for conditioner Saffie Joseph, Jr., has won her last two starts at Gulfstream Park as she readies for her stakes bow.

The first of three graded stakes at historic Saratoga will start with the Grade 1, $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap for 3-year-olds and up sprinting six furlongs in Race 8 at 5:03 p.m. Defending Champion Sprinter Whitmore is still a force to reckon with as an 8-year-old, and the Ron Moquett trainee will look to add to his 15 career wins. Accomplishing that feat will be a tall order, as nine-time graded stakes-winner Firenze Fire goes out for trainer Kelly Breen. Firenze Fire has finished fourth in the last two Vanderbilt editions. Lexitonian, sixth in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap on Belmont Stakes Day last month, will look to bounce back for trainer Jack Sisterson.

A seven-furlong turf allowance for fillies and mares 3-and-up will get Woodbine in on the action in Race 9 at 5:17 p.m. Scatter the Clouds, trained by Michael Keogh, was a debut winner on June 27 at Woodbine and will look to go 2-for-2. Queen's Speed, conditioned by Robert Tiller, won back-to-back starts to close out her 2020 campaign and started her 4-year-old year with a runner-up effort on June 26 at Woodbine off the layoff.

Saratoga will close the sequence with the final two legs, as a talented six-horse field of accomplished sophomores will contest the Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy going 1 1/8 miles in Race 9 at 5:39 p.m. The prep for the Grade 1, $1.25 million Runhappy Travers on August 28 will see superstar Essential Quality make his first start since winning the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes last month. The reigning Champion 2-Year-Old has won six of his seven career starts, tallying three Grade 1 scores, and his only loss was a competitive fourth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs. Essential Quality, whose juvenile year helped earn Brad Cox the Eclipse Award as Outstanding Trainer in 2020, will go up against Weyburn, Dr Jack, Masqueparade, Keepmeinmind and Risk Taking.

The finale will be the Grade 2, $250,000 Bowling Green for 4-year-olds and up going 1 3/8 miles on the Saratoga inner turf in Race 10 at 6:13 p.m. Channel Cat, one of three sons of English Channel entered for Saturday's 63rd renewal, won the 2019 Bowling Green and will look to tally another one for conditioner Jack Sisterson. Bill Mott, who is tied with fellow Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher for most Bowling Green victories with four, will saddle a trio of contenders, including the reigning Champion Turf Male Channel Maker, graded-stakes winner Red Knight and multiple graded-stakes placed Moon Over Miami.

Cross Country Pick 5 Pays $6,000 Saturday

Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5, featuring action from Saratoga, Woodbine, and Monmouth Park, paid $6,061.25 for selecting all five winners for the 50-cent wager. The total pool was $106,967.

Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, commenced the sequence with graded stakes action, as Jolie Olimpica won the $175,000 Grade 2 Nassau for older fillies and mares going one mile on the turf in Race 6. Trained by Josie Carroll and ridden by Luis Contreras, the Brazilian-bred Jolie Olimpica's three-quarters of a length victory in a final time of 1:34.83 paid $5.30 on $2 win wager.

The first of three races at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., came in the second leg, as Luis Saez piloted 10-1 Midnight Worker to a victory by a head over Bourbon Heist in a six-furlong maiden sprint over the main track in Race 6. Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, Midnight Worker paid $22.20 in hitting the wire in 1:11.92.

Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., also got in on the stakes action, with He'spuregold besting slight favorite Quiberon Bay by one length in the $85,000 Irish War Cry for New Jersey-breds 3-years-old and up going one mile on the turf in Race 9. The Kelly Breen trainee, who posted a final time of 1:35.53, returned $5.40.

Saratoga concluded the last two legs, starting when Sifting Sands topped Never Explain by a head in a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claiming tilt on the turf in Race 7. Trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Manny Franco, the British-bred Sifting Sands won at 28-1, paying $58.

A Brown-trained horse completed the Cross Country Pick 5 when the Irish-bred Rastafara won a one-mile inner turf contest for maidens 3-years-old and up going one mile on the inner turf in Race 8. Ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., Rastafara paid $7.10 in notching a final time of 1:36.47.
