Crazy Beautiful Sails Through Mud To Easy Win In Delaware Oaks

The day might have been seen its share of rain, but a muddy track and the field of eight others were no trouble for Kenny McPeek's Crazy Beautiful. At Delaware Park in Wilmington, De., the daughter of Liam's Map bided her time behind the early leaders, made her move for the lead coming out of the final turn, and then pulled away from the rest of the horses to win the Delaware Oaks going away.

At the start, Orbs Baby Girl took command, with Hybrid Eclipse and Crazy Beautiful running a short length behind her. The longshot held the lead through the backstretch, with Mike Smith and Crazy Beautiful hovering on the outside, waiting for the right moment to make their move. On the final turn, as Hybrid Eclipse started to challenge Orbs Baby Girl, Crazy Beautiful went with her, drawing even with both fillies as they entered the stretch. On the straightaway, Crazy Beautiful took an easy lead, stretching her advantage out to six lengths, winning the 1 1/16-mile Delaware Oaks in 1:46.33.

Midnight Obsession, Leader of the Band, Hybrid Eclipse, She's a Hot Mess, Orbs Baby Girl, Baby Gundin, Juror Number Four, and Exogen rounded out the field of nine.

“She jumped better than she ever has leaving the gate,” said winning rider Mike Smith. “It has always been a little bit of a problem with her. I was really happy with that just because of the track being good and because there was not a lot of speed in the race, I wanted to be somewhat closer. We had one tiny anxious moment just past the 3/8ths pole when they picked it up and she kind of lost focus briefly. I barely touched her and she threw me into the rumble seat. That is when I knew we would be fine. After that, it was just all her. I took a peek at the big screen and I felt like I was watching Sunday night football.”

Crazy Beautiful paid $2.60, $2.10, and $2.10. Second place Midnight Obsession paid $3.60 and $2.80. Leader of the Band paid $3.40 to show.

Crazy Beautiful follows up her win in the Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita in her last start, for a record of three wins in five starts in 2021. She was sired by Liam's Map out of Indian Burn, by Indian Charlie. Bred by Carolyn Vogel, Crazy Beautiful is owned by Phoenix Thoroughbred III. She was purchased for Phoenix Thoroughbred by McPeek at the Fasig-Tipton 2019 Fall Yearling Sale for $250,000 from consigner Little's Bloodstock.

Crazy Beautiful Favored in Delaware Oaks

Phoenix Thoroughbreds' Crazy Beautiful (Liam's Map) is the 6-5 morning-line favorite while facing eight rivals in the 1 1/16-mile GIII Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park Saturday. The gray filly, tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following a win in the Runhappy Debutante S., was second in last year's GIII Pocahontas S. and GI Darley Alcibiades S. and began 2021 with a runner-up effort in the GII Davona Dale S. before claiming her first graded victory in the Mar. 27 GII Gulfstream Park Oaks. A troubled 10th in the Apr. 30 GI Kentucky Oaks, she rebounded with a win in the 1 1/16-mile GII Summer Oaks at Santa Anita last time out May 30. Mike Smith, who was aboard for the first time in the Summertime Oaks, takes the return call Saturday.

The lightly raced Midnight Obsession (Overanalyze), making just her fourth trip to the post, is the 4-1 second choice in the Oaks. She bested fellow Pennsylvania-breds by 5 1/4 lengths in her seven-furlong unveiling at Parx Mar. 2 and came back with a one-length tally going 1 1/16 miles at Belmont Apr. 25. She suffered her first loss when second in the off-turf Lyphard S. at Penn National May 28.

On that same rained-off Penn National card, Orbs Baby Girl (Orb) scored the first stakes win of her career with a front-running 5 1/4-length victory in the one-mile Penn Oaks. She is 15-1 on the Delaware Oaks morning line.

Crazy Beautiful Headlines Saturday’s Delaware Oaks

Phoenix Thoroughbred III's Crazy Beautiful tops a field of nine in the $300,000 Grade 3 Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park this Saturday. The Oaks has been carded as the eighth race with an approximate post time of 4:45 p.m.

In her most recent effort, the Kentucky-bred trained by Kenneth McPeek posted a 1 3/4-length score in the mile and a sixteenth Grade 2 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita May 30.

“She is doing great,” said trainer Ken McPeek. “We could not be happier with this filly. She handled the race in California pretty handily, so hopefully we will be able to pull off the coast-to-coast bookend and pull off the Santa Anita to Delaware Park double. The Delaware Oaks is a real good spot for her. The money, the grade and the timing are all what we are looking for. We are excited that Mike Smith is coming back to ride her and I suspect she will be tough.”

Previously, the daughter of Liam's Map was unplaced in mile and an eighth Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on April 30. In her two other outings this year, she won the mile and a sixteenth Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks by 2 ¼-lengths on March 27 and finished second in the one mile Grade 2 Davona Dale at Gulfstream Park on February 27.

Last year, she posted a record of two wins and two seconds from five starts which included a second in the Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland and a second in the Grade 3 Pocahantas Stakes at Churchill Downs. She closed her 2020 campaign by finishing sixth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filly at Keeneland.

Her connections are intending to use the Delaware Oaks as springboard for further engagements this summer in upstate New York.

“Absolutely, there is no question and after the Delaware Oaks, she will ship to Saratoga,” McPeek said. “If she runs well, she might comeback in the Coaching Club or we may skip the Coaching Club and run in the Alabama. We have not decided that yet, but she will be definetly be headed to Saratoga.”

She has a career record of four wins and three seconds from nine starts with earnings of $520,865.

Indiana Derby Draws 46 Nominations, Including 10 From Cox Stable

The 27th running of the Grade 3 $300,000 Indiana Derby has drawn 46 nominations, including four starters from this year's Kentucky Derby. The race is set for Wednesday, July 7 and will be complemented by the 26th running of the Grade 3 $200,000 Indiana Oaks. A total of six stakes are slated for the program with a first post set for 2:25 p.m.

Trainer Brad Cox has nominated 10 to the Indiana Derby, including Belmont Stakes winner Essential Quality. The grey son of Tapit last started in the third leg of the Triple Crown and is three for four in 2021, only missing the win in the 2021 Kentucky Derby where he finished fourth. Other horses nominated from the Cox Stable include Mandaloun, second place finisher in this year's Kentucky Derby and Fulsome, who has won his last three starts, including the Grade 3 Matt Winn at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Greg Foley has nominated O Besos, fifth place finisher in this year's Kentucky Derby. The chestnut son of Orb finished second in his last start in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Steve Asmussen has nominated Super Stock, a starter in the Kentucky Derby. The Dialed In colt finished fourth in his last start, the $300,000 Texas Derby at Lone Star Park. Prior to his start in the Kentucky Derby, Super Stock won the $1 million Grade 1 Arkansas Derby.

A total of 14 horses on the Indiana Derby nomination list are Graded Stakes placed, eight of which are Graded Stakes winners.

The Indiana Oaks has been set up with 29 nominations. Nine of the fillies on the list are Graded Stakes placed with several California connected horses on the list. Ken McPeek has nominated Crazy Beautiful, winner of the Grade 2 Summer Oaks at Santa Anita in her last start. Another filly capturing attention on the list is Army Wife, who won the Grade 2 $250,000 Black Eyed Susan at Pimlico in her last start. The Declaration of War filly is trained by Mike Maker. Will's Secret has also been nominated from the Dallas Stewart Stable. The Will Take Charge filly finished third in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks in her last start.

The Indiana Derby program will include several activities, including five, $1,000 Indiana Derby Megabet drawings, courtesy of the Indiana Thoroughbred Alliance. The early evening card will also include a Cigar Rolling Station, Indiana Derby Hat Contest, strolling entertainment, and extended outdoor food and beverage outlets. Estimated post time for the Indiana Derby is approximately 7:45 p.m.
