World Record Price For Online Thoroughbred Auction Set In New Zealand

Nine-time Group 1 winner Avantage has fetched a whopping NZ$4.1 million (US$2,877,460) when sold to Tom Magnier of global breeding giant Coolmore via New Zealand Bloodstock's online platform Gavelhouse Plus.

The stunning figure establishes a new world record for any horse sold online, a growing trend in the bloodstock industry.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock is the third highest-priced mare ever sold via auction in the Southern Hemisphere behind Milanova, who fetched AUS$5 million (US$3,648,234) in 2008, and the AUS$4.2 million (US$3,064,516) outlaid for Sunlight last year, with all three purchased by Coolmore.

It was virtual theater at its best as Magnier, bidding under user name Danehill1986, fended off rival bidders with refreshed bids every thirty seconds for the best part of 15 minutes.

“Congratulations to David Ellis, Jamie Richards and the connections of this wonderful mare for what they have achieved with her on the track,” Coolmore Australia principal Tom Magnier said.

“We love Fastnet Rock mares, and she has won more Group 1 races than any of them. He is making his presence felt as a broodmares sire throughout the world, and she is one of his best daughters.”

“A mare like her needs to go to an elite stallion and thankfully there are a plethora of options for her here at Coolmore, so the likes of Wootton Bassett, Pierro and Justify will be considered. We look forward to welcoming Avantage back to the farm where she was raised and grazed.”

The star mare's racing career was brought to a sudden halt last Friday after suffering a tendon injury and the decision to disperse the syndicated 6-year-old via gavelhouse.com was promptly made by the Te Akau Avantage Syndicate (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM).

By champion sire Fastnet Rock, with a deep pedigree and strong physique, Avantage commanded interest from major breeders around the world.

Initially purchased as a yearling at Karaka by David Ellis CNZM for $210,000, the high-class mare was prepared by Jamie Richards to win 16 of her 28 starts and $2.16 million in prize money

A group winner on both sides of the Tasman, Avantage boasts the largest haul of Group 1 wins of any of Fastnet Rock's 41 individual Group 1 winners and was known for her versatility, as a Karaka Million winner at two, who won at Group 1 level between 1200 meters and 2000 meters.

Out of the Listed winning Zabeel mare Asavant, who was also Group 1-placed, Avantage was bred by Bluff couple Willie and Karen Calder.

Asavant's dam Pins 'n' Needles was a Group 3 winner and is also the dam of Group 1 winning sprinter DB Pin, a star in Hong Kong. Additionally, Avantage is a half-sister to stakes-placed So You Think mare Asathought.

The result was a historic moment for gavelhouse.com and further outlined the importance of the digital platform in connecting New Zealand with the world.

Trident Takes Dead Aim On Tattersalls

Andre Fabre has long considered Newmarket to be a happy hunting ground and it is significant that the master of Chantilly is at the old “Headquarters” on Thursday for the G3 Tattersalls S. Thirty years ago, Tertian (Danzig) came for this specific race and duly landed the odds and this time it is Trident (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) who is lined up for the seven-furlong prize representing Messrs Smith, Magnier, Tabor and Westerberg. Runner-up in the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville Aug. 22, the bay can only improve over this longer trip on pedigree and could yet shape up into one of his handler's 2000 Guineas hopefuls come the spring.

“I see they had rain on Sunday at Newmarket, but it should have dried by now and in any case, whatever the ground is it won't bother him,” Fabre said. “He got a bump in the Morny just when he was quickening. The extra distance this time will be in his favour and he's going to run well. He's a very reliable colt.”

Godolphin's Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) comes in off a nursery handicap success at Doncaster's St Leger Festival Sept. 8 and trainer Charlie Appleby said, “Modern Games has a lovely, progressive profile and has done very little wrong to date. We have been pleased with him going into this and the testing seven at Newmarket should suit.” Prior to his Doncaster win, Modern Games was second to Manton Park Racing's Cresta (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) in a Leicester novice Aug. 8 and his trainer Martyn Meade said, “Obviously this is a step up, but he's in good form and is ready to take his chance. Andre Fabre's horse was obviously second in the Morny and you can't take that away from him, but you shouldn't be worried about one and we'll take him on.”

Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's Harrow (Ire) (El Kabeir) has won a York nursery Aug. 19 and Doncaster's Weatherbys Scientific £200,000 2-Y-O S. over 6 1/2 furlongs Sept. 9, where he impressed with his acceleration at the finish. Harry Herbert is hoping he can make his presence felt in this company. “Andrew [Balding] has always held the horse in high regard and with every race, he's taken a big step forward,” he said. “I think having won that valuable sales race at Doncaster, Andrew desperately wanted to move into black-type company, so we'll see. It's a big leap, as we know, taking on Andre Fabre's horse Trident but he's very tough and we need to see where we are in the big picture.”

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Runner-Up Battleground To Enter Stud In Turkey

Battleground, who finished second in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland, has been acquired by the Jockey Club of Turkey, and he will enter stud in that country for the 2022 breeding season, the Turkish publication Yaris Dergisi reports.

The 3-year-old son of War Front retired with two wins in seven starts for the Coolmore partnership and trainer Aidan O'Brien, earning $289,722.

Battleground broke his maiden in his second career start as a 2-year-old, taking the Chesham Stakes during the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting. He then won his group stakes debut in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, making him a looming threat in the upcoming Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Battleground left the gate as the favorite in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, and after a wide trip, he finished second to 30-to-1 longshot Fire At Will.

His 3-year-old season was highlighted by a third-place finish in the G1 St. James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Bred in Kentucky by Orpendale / Chelston / Wynatt, Battleground is out of the great Galileo mare Found, whose wins included the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and Breeders' Cup Turf.

Ruler Of The World To Italy

Ruler Of The World (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}-Love Me True, by Kingmambo), winner of the 2013 Derby, will relocate to Andy Capp Stud in Siena in 2022. Ruler Of The World will be managed by the partnership of Mattia Cadrobbi, Marco Bozzi and Guido Berardelli, the same group that has managed another son of Galileo, Magician (Ire), in Italy. Magician will return to Ireland.

Ruler Of The World won the Derby in his third start for the Coolmore partners. Al Shaqab Racing bought into the chestnut for his 4-year-old campaign, during which he won the G2 Prix Foy. Ruler of the World stood for five seasons at Coolmore in Ireland and the past two at Al Shaqab's Haras de Bouquetot in Normandy. Heading his five stakes winners is the four-time Group 1 and Breeders' Cup winner Iridessa (Ire), while La Petite Coco (Ire) upset champion filly Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to win the G2 Blandford S. last weekend.
