Galileo’s Magical Lagoon Resilient In Irish Oaks Triumph

Yuesheng Zhang's Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Night Lagoon {Ger}, by Lagunas {GB}) displayed a willing attitude when annexing last month's G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot and her determination was to the fore again as she refused to yield and battled gamely to a career high in Saturday's G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks at the Curragh. Last term's G3 Flame of Tara S. victrix went off as the 5-4 favourite, in the absence of Epsom's G1 Oaks exacta Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), and raced under a firm hold behind the clear leader, Show Of Stars (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), in second. Inching ever closer from halfway, she cruised to the front on the bridle approaching the final quarter mile and called upon deep reserves under a drive in the closing stages to bravely repel the persistent threat of Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by a hard-fought half length, with Cairde Go Deo (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) 2 3/4 lengths further adrift in third.

Magical Lagoon, fourth on debut at Naas in August, had earlier backed up her Flame of Tara victory with a close-up seventh in Newmarket's Oct. 8 G1 Fillies' Mile in her juvenile season closer and opened this campaign with a short-head second contesting Navan's Apr. 23 Listed Salsabil S. in her penultimate start.

“It's wonderful to win one classic, to get two is absolutely amazing,” commented Jessica Harrington after adding to her 2018 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas success with Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). “She's such a game filly, who only does as much as she has to do and she's just a lovely filly to train for Mr Zhang. I kept looking at what was behind her, but I knew she'd keep staying. She stayed very well in Ascot, but they probably didn't go as quick as they did in Ascot. She just ran a great race, Shane [Foley] was in the right position and kept going forward. He rode a super race and she kept finding and finding. It's only her third run this year and I'd say she'll improve again. She's in the [G1] Yorkshire Oaks and after that I haven't really made a decision. It's been mooted and I'd love to keep her in training next year. I hope so because Galileos improve and her brother [Novellist] was a much better 4-year-old than 3-year-old. Before [Emily Upjohn's enforced withdrawal] we were the underdogs and I love being the underdog and having a go at them, but it's worked out great.”

Magical Lagoon, who becomes the 96th Group 1 winner for her sire, is one of five black-type performers produced by G3 Preis der Winterkonigin victrix Night Lagoon (Ger) (Lagunas {GB}), herself half to multiple stakes-winning G1 Deutsches Derby second Night Tango (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}) and one of three black-type performers out of Listed Dusseldorf-Preis winner Nenuphar (Ire) (Night Shift). Thus, the April-foaled bay is half to MG1SW G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S.-winning sire Novellist (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), German Group 3 second Nuntius (Ger) (Dalakhani {Ire}), Listed Derby-Trial second Nerud (Bernardini) and the stakes-placed Ninfea (Ger) (Selkirk). Ninfea is the dam of G2 Prix Chaudenay runner-up Nemean Lion (Ger) (Golden Horn {GB}) and the stakes-placed Nayala (GB) (Maxios {GB}). Nenuphar, kin to the stakes-winning duo Nostro Amico (Ger) (Martillo {Ger}) and National Academy (Ger) (Royal Academy), traces back directly to G3 Zukunfts-Rennen victrix Night Music (Ger) (Pramos {Ger}), herself a half-sister to G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Novelle (Ger) (Northfields).

Frankel’s Hans Andersen Powers To Rising Stardom In Ireland

Westerberg and Coolmore's 450,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shadow Hunter {Ire}, by Arcano {Ire}) gained much benefit for his debut run, tackling an extended seven furlongs at Tipperary last month, and earned a 'TDN Rising Star' badge with a dominant display down to seven furlongs for Saturday's Juddmonte Farms Expert Eye Irish EBF (C&G) Maiden at the Curragh. The 10-11 favourite was sharply into stride to gain immediate control. Nudged along when the pack threatened approaching the quarter-mile marker, he held a comfortable buffer entering the final furlong and quickened beyond recall in style before easily holding the late rush of Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) by 1 3/4 lengths.

“He had a lovely run the first day, he learned plenty and we're delighted with him,” said Aidan O'Brien. “He was a little bit green turning in in Tipperary and came forward lovely. He won well today and should have no problem stepping into stakes company now. He should have no problem going further, but there is no rush to step him up [in trip]. He could come back here for the [G2] Futurity or something like that.”

Hans Andersen, full-brother to a yearling colt, is the second of three foals and lone runner produced by Listed Roses S. victrix and G3 Cornwallis S. third Shadow Hunter (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}), herself the leading performer out of a winning half to G1 1000 Guineas placegetter Super Sleuth (Ire) (Selkirk). The January-foaled bay's stakes-placed third dam Enemy Action (Forty Niner), herself a daughter of the stakes-placed Sun And Shade (GB) (Ajdal), is a half-sister to dual Group 2-winning sire Daggers Drawn (Diesis {GB}) and to the dams of GI Garden City S. third Concise (GB) (Lemon Drop Kid) and G3 Premio Regina Elena (Italian 1000 Guineas) heroine Evading Tempete (GB) (by Dubai Destination).

Just Cindy Earns First American Stakes Win for Justify in Schuylerville

Already off to a hot start with his first-crop runners that includes a Group 2 winner in Ireland, Triple Crown winner Justify wasted no time putting an American graded stakes win on the board as his daughter Just Cindy kicked clear late to take Thursday's opening-day GIII Schuylerville S. at Saratoga, the first graded event for juveniles run in North America in 2022.

Unveiled as a poorly-kept secret at 6-5 going 5 1/2 furlongs June 17 at Churchill Downs, the Clarkland Farm homebred settled off the pace professionally and drew clear in the final furlong to a 2 1/4-length graduation. Backed as the clear 21-10 second favorite behind 5-4 chalk Summer Promise (Uncle Mo) Thursday, Just Cindy came away well from her rail draw and found a good spot in a pocketed third under Irad Ortiz, Jr. as longshot Musicmansandy (Accelerate) clicked off a :22.38 quarter with Summer Promise close in tow.

The chalk quickly swept past the leader midway around the turn, but Just Cindy soon came calling while angling out into the clear, and those two arrived at the top of the lane together. Jostling with her foe several times in early stretch, Just Cindy started to get the measure of Summer Promise at the sixteenth pole and edged away late to prevail by 2 1/4 lengths. Summer Promise held the place, ahead of a green-running Janis Joplin (California Chrome).

“It was great and I think she's still a little green too, so I think there's a lot of raw talent there,” said Kelly Wheeler, assistant to winning trainer Eddie Kenneally. “She's an exciting horse to have in the barn. She kind of got knocked around a little bit and she stayed professional and ran on. It's really all you can ask for in a second-time starter.”

“The filly is really nice. She does everything right,” added Ortiz. “From the one post, she overcame everything and got there on time. When I asked her at the quarter pole, she did it.”

Pedigree Notes:

One of four winners thus far for Coolmore's 2018 Triple Crown hero Justify, Just Cindy is already his second graded/group stakes winner, following Statuette, who backed up a 'TDN Rising Star' nod with an impressive victory in the G2 Airlie Stud S. June 26 at The Curragh. Justify's Tahoma also picked up black type with a runner-up finish in the Fasig-Tipton Futurity S. June 18 at Santa Anita. Just Cindy is the first foal out of 'TDN Rising Star' Jenda's Agenda, who started her career three-for-three including a win in the Caesar's Wish S. at Laurel. Second dam Just Jenda was a seven-time stakes winner and three-time graded stakes winner who earned over $750,000. Bought for $90,000 by Hill 'n' Dale at Keeneland November in 2018, Jenda's Agenda is responsible for a yearling American Pharoah filly and produced a filly by Mendelssohn Mar. 1.

Caravaggio’s Tenebrism Storms To Jean Prat Glory

Delivering the potent acceleration that had seen her claim joint-champion status among the juvenile fillies in the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket in September, TDN Rising Star Tenebrism (Caravaggio) was firmly in command under optimum conditions in Deauville's seven-furlong G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat on Sunday. Able to draft in mid-pack early, Ballydoyle's 13-2 shot who sports the Westerberg silks was unleashed between Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and Rozgar (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and after gaining the lead 100 metres from the line stayed on strongly to record a 1 1/4-length verdict over Light Infantry (GB) (Fast Company {Ire}). There was a blanket for the minors, with Light Infantry a short neck in front of Lusail, who was in turn a nose ahead of Accakaba (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), with a nose also separating that rival and Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and a short head between that Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero and Rozgar. “The pace was a little slow and we had to wait–it was tight for room and they were all on top of each other, but she's got that great turn of foot and is a fast filly,” Ryan Moore said of the winner, who had been eighth in the 1000 Guineas and fourth in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot last time June 17.

Tenebrism, whose immediate entry is in Goodwood's star-studded G1 Qatar Sussex S. July 27, was providing another landmark for Aidan O'Brien, who had yet to win the Jean Prat. “She's always shown plenty–she won the Cheveley Park on her second start and the ground was very fast for the Guineas and she got banged around and never got into any rhythm,” Moore, who had returned from action at Belmont hours earlier, added. “She was still a bit green at Ascot and struggled around the bend, but finished well and ran a good race but it was nice to come to a level track on nice ground today. She accelerated through the gap like a motorbike–Caravaggio was fast and she's out of Immortal Verse, who is well known here. She was very comfortable over seven today.”

Light Infantry, who had like Lusail been an eye-catcher when ninth in the 2000 Guineas having missed the break, is set for a return visit to Deauville for next month's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois. “We thought the seven furlongs on fast ground would be against him and I'd like to think he has a bright future and will definitely be better at a mile,” trainer David Simcock said. “He ran better than his finishing position suggested at Newmarket and hopefully he'll come back here in August for the Jacques Le Marois. He is a very straightforward, very talented horse who handles any ground.”

Lusail was putting up another solid effort at the top level and trainer Richard Hannon said, “The mixed tempo of the race maybe cost us the win and other than that, there is nothing more to say. He is very consistent and will almost certainly win us another big one soon. He will most likely head to Goodwood for the [G2] Lennox Stakes or the Sussex.” Christophe Ferland said of Accakaba, “I am torn somewhere between satisfied and disappointed not to have won. I love this filly. She has an exceptional turn of foot and this was a proper race, with the best horses at seven furlongs and a mile–she'll now head to the [G1] Prix Maurice De Gheest.”

Charlie Appleby was pleased with the effort of Modern Games, who was found out by the drop from a mile. “We've got caught for a turn of foot, dropping back to seven and in the end, we know the mile is his best trip,” he said. “Trying to find a mile race for him at this time of the year is difficult, but there is the Sussex or the Jacques Le Marois and if he goes to the former he'll run alongside Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and if he goes for the Marois it will be with Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {Ire}). As
always, he ran a very solid race.”

Pedigree Notes:

Tenebrism, whose much-larger 2-year-old half-sister Statuette (Justify) is making waves having won the G2 Airlie Stud S., currently rates as her sire's best performer from his first crop. The aforementioned Immortal Verse, who captured the G1 Coronation S. and this venue's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, is out of the Listed Prix La Camargo winner and G3 Prix Fille de l'Air runner-up Side of Paradise (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and is a full-sister to Go Lovely Rose (Ire) who is responsible for four black-type performers including the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. runner-up Roseman (Ire) (Kingman {GB}).

Side of Paradise is a daughter of Mill Princess (Ire) (Mill Reef), renowned for producing the Breeders' Cup Mile hero and champion sire Last Tycoon (Ire), as well as the G3 Goldene Peitsche-winning fellow sire Astronef (Ire) and the G3 Prix du Bois scorer and stakes producer The Perfect Life (Ire) (Try My Best). Another of Mill Princess's daughters, Save Me The Waltz (Ire) (Kings Lake), is in turn the dam of the GI Matron S. heroine Sense of Style (Thunder Gulch) and the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Valentine Waltz (Ire) (Be My Guest), while the moderate performer Zelda (Ire) (Caerleon) proved one of the family's best in her second career. Under her are the top sprinter Zipping (Ire) (Zafonic) and the G2 Prix du Gros-Chene winner Beauty Is Truth (Ire) by Immortal Verse's sire Pivotal (GB). Her trio of group 1 winners by Galileo (Ire) are Hermosa (Ire), Hydrangea (Ire) and The United States (Ire).
