Royal Scotsman Scoots To Richmond Triumph

Fitri Hay's Royal Scotsman (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}–Enrol {GB}, by Pivotal {GB}) finished a close up third in Royal Ascot's G2 Coventry S. and justified odds-on favouritism with a snug victory over the same six-furlong trip in Thursday's G2 Richmond S. at Goodwood. Fourth behind the 'TDN Rising Star' display of Noble Style (GB) (Kingman {GB}) contesting a hot novice heat over five furlongs at Ascot in his May 7 debut, he graduated by five lengths over this course and distance 13 days later before his black-type debut in the Coventry last time. The 5-6 pick was well away to stalk the leaders in a handy fourth and raced under a firm grip through halfway. Shaken up passing the quarter-mile marker, he quickened for control approaching the final furlong and was ridden out in the closing stages to easily hold the Windsor maiden winner Al Karrar (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths in a new track-record time. Isa Salman Al Khalifa's Listed Rose Bowl S. winner Chateau (Ire) (Havana Gold {Ire}) ran on well to finish 1 1/2 lengths further adrift in third.

“Royal Scotsman likes a bit of cover and switches off well,” commented trainer Paul Cole. “Our main worry was just getting some cover, but nothing could have gone better today and it all went exactly as we'd hoped it would go. Nothing worries him and he is a fantastic horse. There is the possibility of stepping up in trip, but he has a lot of speed and is out of a fast mare. I can't see anything around that has as much speed as him. There are very good races on the horizon such as the [G1 Prix] Morny and potentially York. I'm not good at making quick decisions. I've had two or three other great horses, but leading up to this race he gave me a better vibe. You're never certain, as anything can happen, but everything went well and I couldn't comprehend being beaten. If you're looking at the [G1] 2000 Guineas, good horses can win over a lot of trips and the way he behaves is very good. Whether he gets a mile or not I don't know, but he is bred for it.”

Winning rider Jim Crowley, remaining on a high plateau after the G1 Sussex S. success of Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), added, “Royal Scotsman had the best form in the book, his Coventry form has worked out well and he was unlucky that day as I was drawn one and got a bump. He still travelled very strongly today, he would be even better with a bit of cut in the ground, and it was a nice performance. If the gap had shut, I would have kicked myself for not going. He was always going nicely and, once we got inside the final two furlongs, it was all over really. He has a lot of speed and could be a horse for the [G1] Prix Morny. He is physically strong and has lots of speed. The more he learns to relax, he will be able to go further.”

Jim Hay, husband of owner Fitri Hay, continued, “That was thrilling and it's why we do it. Paul and Oliver [Cole] were as confident as you can be coming into Goodwood. This is a very tricky track and there are no shoo-ins. We love coming to Goodwood and had a lot of success here. Win, lose or draw here, you have a fantastic day. Royal Scotsman is a serious horse.”

“I am thrilled with his run on only his second start,” Tom Clover said of Al Karrar's second-place finish. “Experience has just caught him out there, as he was on and off the bridle the whole way. He hit the line really strong and galloped out. He has done everything bar win. He is a lovely horse with a lovely future. I think we have done the right thing coming here and to be second in a Richmond is pretty good. What is lovely for us is that he should improve for the experience. We have him in the [G2] Champagne S. [at Doncaster] and, whether we will go six furlongs or seven furlongs next time, I don't know. If we get a smooth run through the autumn, he is a lovely horse for next year.”

Jake Warren, advisor to Chateau's owner Isa Salman Al Khalifa, said, “He has run very well considering the tight turnaround from Newbury. He was a bit unlucky in running, he got caught on the rail and nearly had to start his race again at the halfway point. He has finished off really well. He is a lovely horse and we will try and find a nice race for him. We will look at the [G2] Gimcrack [at York] and the 2-year-old Pattern as it unfolds. Havana Golds tend to be sharp horses, he is a nice big-framed animal and one would have to think that it could be possible [to go up in trip] in time. We will see.”

Royal Scotsman is the latest of five live foals out of the dual stakes-placed Enrol (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), herself kin to Listed Golden Rose S. and Listed Boadicea Fillies' S. placegetter Enact (GB) (Kyllachy {GB). The April-foaled bay's Graded stakes-placed third dam Appointed One (Danzig) is kin to seven black-type performers headed by her multiple Group-winning full-brother Emperor Jones and G1 William Hill Futurity victor and dual Classic-placed British champion Bakharoff (The Minstrel).

Kimari Returns to Winning Ways in Honorable Miss

'TDN Rising Star' Kimari (Munnings) earned her first graded win of the season Wednesday when rallying to victory in Saratoga's GII Honorable Miss H. The 3-1 third choice in a four-horse field, the bay broke a hair slow from the outside post, though not as slow as second choice Frank's Rockette (Into Mischief) in the one-hole. Kimari sat off the fence in third with Frank's Rockette off her inside flank as favored Bella Sofia (Awesome Patriot) and 8-1 outsider Amadevil (Dominus) knocked heads on the front end. Amadevil cruised clear of the chalk, clocking a first quarter in :22.72. Frank's Rockette got into gear, charging up the fence to take control from her longshot foe with Bella Sofia and Kimari ranging up together on the outside as they entered the far turn. Frank's Rockette took command at the top of the stretch with Bella Sofia navigating her way to the fence for an inside attempt and Kimari still coming on the outside. Bella Sofia never turned on the after burners and posed the briefest of threats before backing up. Meanwhile, Kimari was just finding her best stride in the final sixteenth, forging clear of a determined Frank's Rockette to win by a half-length. Amadevil and was eased, vanned off and reported to have bled.

“I thought the race set up for today, especially drawing the outside,” trainer Wesley Ward said. “It gave Joel [Rosario] a nice easy run down the backside with no opposition as far as maneuvering to try to get there. He was already there when they opened the gates. That was a key. It just worked out great, and it's always great to stand in the winner's circle for a graded race at Saratoga. There's nothing like it.”

As for what's next, the conditioner said, “Our ultimate goal would be the [GI] Breeders' Cup [Filly and Mare Sprint in November at Keeneland] because it's my home track and her home track. So we'll work backwards from there and get together with Coolmore and give them a few options.”

“She ran good,” Rosario said. “She's a nice horse and always tries hard. I'm glad we got the win today. It looked like there was going to be so much speed and she [Kimari] can be up closer, but we kind of were in a good spot and she did great and responded to everything I asked her to do. I thought for a second the leader might get away, but she kept fighting and got the job done.”

Kimari captured the GI Madison S. at Keeneland last April and was subsequently sent to the sidelines. Resurfacing in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar seven months later, she checked in seventh behind stablemate Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) and went through the ring at Fasig-Tipton's November Sale two days later, summoning $2.7 million from Coolmore's M. V. Magnier. Returned to Ward's care, Kimari made her seasonal bow in a main track event at Gulfstream Mar. 3, romping by 5 1/4 lengths. The bay was third when attempting to defend her title in this year's Madison Apr. 9 and was fifth last time in the GI Derby City Distaff S. at Churchill Downs May 7.

No Nay Never’s Trillium On Top In The Molecomb

Rockcliffe Stud's 2-year-old filly Trillium (GB) (No Nay Never–Marsh Hawk {GB}, by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was the lone distaffer in Wednesday's G3 Markel Molecomb S. at Goodwood and took full advantage of her gender allowance to deny Listed Dragon S. victor Rocket Rodney (GB) (Dandy Man {Ire}) in the five-furlong dash. She had opened up with a June 17 debut second tackling six furlongs at the Sussex venue and was let go at a generous 7-1 coming back off a four-length tally, again over six, at Newbury earlier this month. Unfazed in seventh behind furious early fractions up front here, she weaved a passage into contention approaching the final furlong and quickened smartly in the closing stages to win by 1 1/4 lengths, in a new track record, with plenty in hand.

“Trillium has always been a lovely filly, I was amazed she did not win here first time and she probably did not know enough and was a bit keen,” said trainer Richard Hannon. “She won her maiden very nicely at Newbury, we have come back from six furlongs to five and she is starting to look like a very nice 2-year-old. She came in late and is a credit to Rockcliffe Stud. We will look at the [G1] Prix Morny and Ed Sackville mentioned the [GI] Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. I did not put her in the [G2] Lowther as she was not showing this much speed then. She does not have to sprint and six furlongs won't be a problem. She looks like a very tall, strong 2-year-old and I would love to think she is a filly for next year, but she is a Group winner now and that would be a bonus.”

Ed Sackville, racing manager for Rockcliffe Stud, added, “It is absolutely fantastic. This is a homebred filly out of a mare called Marsh Hawk, who was fourth in the [G1] Fillies' Mile for us. We were offered a lot of money for Marsh Hawk and luckily turned it down. It has paid off as Trillium has just won the Molecomb in impressive style and we are delighted. Richard was keen to drop her down to five furlongs as he feels that she just shows so much speed. We had her in the Alice Keppel [conditions race], but as we're owner-breeders, the black type is more important, so it's great. I'll talk to Richard about future plans, but a race that interests me is the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, a Grade I million-dollar race. That would be exciting, we've got black type and can go anywhere now.”

Rocket Rodney's trainer George Scott reflected, “We were beaten fair and square by a better horse on the day. Trillium was the fly in the ointment really for me going into the race. She's a well-bred filly from a good operation, who was impressive last time out, and she was always the one I was worried about. We've beaten Eddie's Boy by the same distance we've beaten him in the last two starts, so we've probably just run to our form and she has improved past us. We are working back from the Breeders' Cup, we will probably give him a couple of easy weeks and then work towards the [G2] Flying Childers. Then he will run once more, depending on the ground, and we want to end up at Keeneland for the 2-year-old five-furlong race on the Friday. It's a newish race and it will be perfect for him.”

Third-placed Walbank's rider Rossa Ryan added, “I had to do the donkey work on my own side, but I was a step slower away so that didn't help. He has run well and he's a real, true five-furlong horse. He should win his black-type race and I would be disappointed if he doesn't.”

Trillium is the third foal and scorer produced by G3 Dick Poole Fillies' S. runner-up Marsh Hawk (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), herself a half-sister to G2 Queen Mary S. third Hairy Rocket (GB) (Pivotal {GB}).
