Speightstown ‘Rising Star’ Remains Unbeaten at Ellis

2nd-Ellis, $52,460, Alw (NW2$X)/Opt. Clm ($40,000), 7-10, 3yo/up, f/m, 6 1/2f, 1:16.18, gd, 4 1/2 lengths.
CARRIBEAN CAPER (f, 3, Speightstown–Checkupfromzneckup {SP, $187,470}, by Dixie Union) continued to justify the 'TDN Rising Star' distinction with her third win from as many starts Saturday. An eight-length romper at Fair Grounds Feb. 13, good for an 87 Beyer Speed Figure, the dark bay took a Keeneland optional claimer by 4 1/2 lengths going seven panels Apr. 2 and was pounded down to 1-5 off the brief freshening here. She was off a half-step slowly and then shuffled back further to trail her four foes before rushing up into third down the backside. Carribean Caper ranged up three deep ominously after a :44.90 half, and outclassed her competition from there to cruise home 4 1/2 lengths to the good. Queen Bridget (Verrazano) edged Recoded (Honor Code) for second. The winner's now 2-year-old half-sister Bombdiggity (Into Mischief) was a $600,000 Keeneland September purchase. Checkupfromzneckup has a yearling filly by Tapit and a Quality Road foal colt. For more, see Impressive Maiden Winners Begin to Take 'Charge' in Stall Barn. Sales history: $250,000 Ylg '19 KEESEP. Speightstown Filly Romps to ‘Rising Star’ Honors in Fair Grounds Opener

Carribean Caper (f, 3, Speightstown–Checkupfromzneckup, by Dixie Union) kicked off Saturday's loaded GII Risen Star S. card with a 'TDN Rising Star' performance in the lid lifter at Fair Grounds.

The 3-1 chance broke sharply and forced the issue on the outside from second through an opening quarter in :22.24 over the “good” going. Always traveling like the winner, she poked her head in front approaching the quarter pole, and with a shake or two of the reins from Colby Hernandez, took off in a flash to win going away by a geared-down eight lengths over Famous Attraction (Into Mischief).

The four-time winner and stakes-placed Checkupfromzneckup was purchased by breeder WinStar Farm for $825,000 carrying Carribean Caper in utero at the 2017 KEENOV Sale. Her Into Mischief 2-year-old filly brought $600,000 from Stonestreet Stables as a Keeneland September yearling. She had a filly by Tapit in 2020 and was bred back to Quality Road.

Second dam Unbridled Lassie has a well-beaten third-place finish in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks on her resume.

This is the extended female family of Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise, dam of the legendary A.P. Indy and Classic winner Summer Squall. MG1SW and two-time highweight Wolfhound is also on Carribean Caper's page.

Another First-Time Starter Winner for American Pharoah

10th-Saratoga, $72,000, Msw, 7-29, 3yo/up, f/m, 5 1/2fT, 1:02.63, fm.
ZERO TO SIXTY (f, 3, American Pharoah–Cat Moves {GISW, $315,350}, by Tale of the Cat) eased out to 7-1 after being as low as 5-1 and kicked it in an eighth of a mile from home to graduate in sparkling fashion in the Wednesday finale from Saratoga. Drawn widest in the field of nine, the $320,000 Keeneland September was beaten for speed and raced in the latter half of the field for the opening furlong before advancing outside into midpack nearing the entrance to the turn. Held together for a four-wide sweep on the bend, she came out in upper stretch and found that extra gear for the final furlong, besting Let The Eat Cake (Animal Kingdom) by 1 1/2 lengths. Zero To Sixty’s dam broke her maiden by 8 1/4 lengths at first asking for Tony Dutrow and the late Ned Evans and added a 3/4-length victory in the GI Prioress S. two starts later ahead of a third in this track’s GI Test S. in 2009. Zero To Sixty carries inbreeding to Storm Cat, which can also be found in three of American Pharoah’s nine stakes winners to date (Sweet Melania, Ocean Atlantique and Danon Pharaoh). Cat Moves, who fetched $2.4 million in foal to Malibu Moon at KEENOV in 2011, was knocked down for $400,000 carrying to Candy Ride (Arg) at the same auction in 2017. The resulting foal, a colt, has since been exported to Saudi Arabia, while Cat Moves produced a filly by Widden Stud’s Zoustar (Aus) (Northern Meteor {Aus}) following her export to Australia. She was barren to Justify for 2020. This is also the extended female family of GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf hero Hootenanny (Quality Road).
