More Than Ready Firster Just That at the Spa

1st-Saratoga, $105,000, Msw, 8-7, 2yo, 5 1/2fT, 1:02.50, fm, 2 lengths.
GILCREASE (c, 2, More Than Ready–Indian Brava {SP}, by Bernardini) was let go at longshot odds, owing in large part to an overbet favorite in the form of 3-4 Talkin Pharoah (American Pharoah), and got the Sunday program at Saratoga off to a $54 upset for a barn that can strike with this kind. Showing good speed for this career debut, the dark bay chased from third as Talkin Pharoah argued the pace inside of his stable companion, the filly Scarpia (Union Rags) through an opening quarter mile in a lively :21.17. Chased along by Julien Leparoux from third as they raced around the turn, Gilcrease made ominous headway into contention on the swing for home, was steered out to split the Ward duo with about an eighth of a mile to travel and kicked home to take it by a solid two lengths. Scarpia was an excellent second ahead of Certified Loverboy (Mendelssohn) in third, while Talkin Pharoah retreated to finish last of the octet. Andrea Pollack's operation acquired Gilcrease's stakes-placed dam for $425,000 in foal to Runhappy at Keeneland November in 2017, but this colt is her only live produce. Indian Brava is a daughter of My Juliet S. heroine (103 Beyer) and GI Prioress S. third Indian Way (Indian Charlie)–winner of four of her six career starts–and was most recently covered by Runhappy. Gilcrease is bred on the exact same cross as GI Belmont Derby and GI Travers S. victor Catholic Boy. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $57,750. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Pappacap Brings Strongest Juvenile Form Into Lecomte

Much to the delight of owner/breeder Rustlewood Farm and trainer Mark Casse, Pappacap (Gun Runner) will face nothing of the quality of the likes of 'TDN Rising Star' and likely Eclipse Award winner Corniche (Quality Road) when he makes his sophomore debut in Saturday's GIII Lecomte S. at the Fair Grounds.

The homebred was off the board just once from five runs in 2021, winning the GII Best Pal S. by open lengths at second asking before completing the exacta underneath the OBS April topper when beaten 3 1/4 lengths in the GI American Pharoah S. Oct. 1 and again in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar Nov. 5, where he sat a perfect trip, but could not quite match strides late and was 1 3/4 lengths adrift at the wire.

Casse is a two-time Lecomte winner, having unsaddled future Classic winner War of Will (War Front) in 2019 and Enforceable (Tapit) the following January.

“I never questioned where I wanted to go after the Breeders' Cup,” Casse said. “I feel really comfortable at Fair Grounds. We had a lot of success over that track. I think it's a great atmosphere and I have a lot of confidence in [assistant trainer] David Carroll. I think the track there suits him. He's a horse that wants to settle a little bit and not have to hustle a whole lot. He gets over the ground really well there.”

Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow), who runs one race prior to the Lecomte this weekend (see below), won last year's event for Winchell Thoroughbreds and Steve Asmussen and that formidable duo will be represented here by Epicenter (Not This Time). A speed-and-fade sixth in his seven-furlong debut at Churchill Sept. 18, he overcame the widest gate in a field of 10 to graduate by 3 1/2 lengths going the one-turn mile Nov. 13. The second choice to the dramatically overbet Rocket Dawg (Classic Empire) in the first running of the Gun Runner S. Dec. 26, the bay prompted the pace of Surfer Dude (Curlin) to the outside and powered home to take it by 6 1/2 lengths. Joel Rosario, who broke the colt's maiden, is back aboard this weekend.

Trafalgar (Lord Nelson) is an interesting new shooter for trainer Al Stall, Jr. and Andrea Pollack's Columbine Stable. The $100,000 FTKSEL yearling turned $310,000 OBS April breezer was a distant runner-up to the impressive and subsequently GISP Classic Causeway (Giant's Causeway) sprinting on Saratoga debut Sept. 4, then rallied stoutly–albeit with a strong pace to chase–to don cap and gown by 2 1/4 lengths in a one-mile test at Churchill Oct. 2. Conservatively spotted in a first-level allowance over course and distance Dec. 2, Trafalgar attended a much softer pace, looked in all sorts of trouble as first-out winner Naval Aviator (Tapit) rolled up to him late, but turned back that bid to score by a hard-fought head.

“He clearly waited on horses from the three-sixteenths to the sixteenth [pole],” Stall, Jr. said. “Here comes a Brad Cox horse [Naval Aviator] with a full head of steam, and I'm thinking, 'well there goes a 3-5 shot down the drain,' but he just re-engaged when he saw him and had to run hard the last part. I like the fact that he went from lollygagging around straight to fighting.”

Cyberknife (Gun Runner) is another with a two-turn victory to his credit, having idled in the final stages before clinging on for a half-length maiden breaker over track and trip on Dec. 26. Trainer Brad Cox adds blinkers to try to sharpen to colt's focus.

Carribean Caper Captures Dogwood Stakes At Churchill

Columbine Stable's Carribean Caper swept three-wide on the turn to reel in the early leaders and drew away in the stretch for an easy six-length victory over Someone Said So in Saturday's 46th running of the $275,000 Grade 3 Dogwood at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., to remain unbeaten in five starts.

Carribean Caper ran seven furlongs in 1:22.57 over fast track under Colby Hernandez, who rode the winner for trainer Al Stall Jr.

“I was happy to see her leave the gate well and get to the outside,” Stall Jr. said. “She's a really classy animal. I'm really proud to train her.”

This was the first graded stakes win for Carribean Caper, who previously won the $100,000 Audubon Oaks at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., in her stakes debut.

“We'll probably take a look at the race at Keeneland ($250,000 Grade 2 Raven Run) on Oct. 23,” Stall Jr. said. “Even further down the road maybe we could look at something like the Grade 1 La Brea (on Dec. 26 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.). Maybe in the future, I could see her stretch out but right now she's doing so well sprinting and we'll try to keep her on that track.”

The $60,570 first prize jumped Carribean Caper's earnings to $238,060 from a record of 5-0-0 in five starts.

Sent off as the odds-on 2-5 favorite in the field of six 3-year-old fillies, Carribean Caper paid $2.80, $2.20, and $2.10. Someone Said So, a 10-1 longshot ridden by Adam Beschizza, returned $6.40 and $3.00. Malloy, also at 10-1 with Joe Talamo up, was 2 ¼ lengths back of the runner-up and paid $3.20 to show.

Shesa Mystery, Patty H, and Coppelia completed the order of finish. Li'l Tootsie was scratched.

Coppelia, breaking from the rail, and Patty H, from post No. 5, battled for the early lead down the backstretch through fractions of :22.42 and :44.88. Someone Said So rated just off the leaders and Carribean Caper rated in the clear in fourth. Midway around the turn, Carribean Caper dragged Hernandez to the front with a sweeping move. She poked her head in front at the top of the homestretch and easily put away her five rivals down the lane.

“She broke pretty well today and I was able to get her to the outside pretty easily,” Hernandez said. “I got her into a nice rhythm and she went on with it. Today's race was all her. All I had to do was hang on.”

Carribean Caper is a daughter of Speightstown out of the Dixie Union mare Checkupfromzneckup and was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm. She was purchased by Columbine Stable's Andrea Pollack for $250,000 at 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale from consignor VanMeter-Gentry Sales.

The Dogwood is named for the hardy, blooming tree that adds so much beauty to the spring landscape in Kentucky.

‘Rising Star’ Carribean Caper Earns First Stakes Win at Ellis

'TDN Rising Star' Carribean Caper took the next step Sunday to earn her first stakes win and fourth victory overall from as many trips to the post. An eight-length romper at Fair Grounds Feb. 13, the dark bay had an easy time with first-level optional claiming foes at Keeneland Apr. 2, and resurfaced from a freshening to clear another condition here July 10. Favored in the wagering over formidable foe Magic Quest–who had run faster than Carribean Caper in her last two, both wins–she tugged her way up in between foes while hard held and was eventually given her head to move up to Magic Quest's right flank after a :23.43 quarter. Ratcheting up the pressure after a :46.26 half, she hit another gear in the final furlong to inch clear.

The winner, who was an $825,000 in utero purchase at Keeneland November, has a 2-year-old half-sister named Bombdiggity (Into Mischief) who was a $600,000 KEESEP yearling; a Tapit yearling half-sister who brought $990,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga last Monday from West Point Thoroughbreds, Scarlet Oak Racing and NBS Stable; and a foal half-brother by Quality Road. Dam Checkupfromzneckup, who hails from the extended female family of A.P. Indy, was bred back to Quality Road for 2022.
