Casse Plays Chess with Spinaway-Bound Wonder Wheel

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Though their names are similar and they have trainer Mark Casse in common, Wonder Gadot (Medaglia d'Oro) and Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief) are not related, except, possibly, in ability.

Wonder Gadot, a two-time champion and 2018 Horse of the Year in Canada, is named for the Israeli actress, Gal Gadot, who gained international attention in the 2017 film “Wonder Woman.” Wonder Wheel, the unbeaten filly who will run in the GI Spinaway S. Sunday, is named for the very famous 102-year-old, 150-foot Ferris wheel at Coney Island, N.Y.

Wonder Wheel has spent the summer at Saratoga prepping for the historic Spinaway, the first Grade I of the season in the U.S. for 2-year-olds. She won both her starts at Churchill Downs earlier in the summer. Casse said he never considered entering her in the GIII Schuylerville S. or the GIII Adirondack S., the Saratoga filly stakes that typically are stepping stones to the Spinaway. There will be 60 days between her starts.

“That was by plan. You can't run them all,” Casse said. “We ran her and then she won the stake at Churchill. So, it was by design.”

In her debut June 3 at 5 1/2 furlongs, Wonder Wheel came from off the pace for a 2 1/4-length victory. On July 4 in the Debutante S., she quickly seized the lead and ran away from the others to score by 6 3/4 lengths, covering the six furlongs in 1:10.26.

Casse said the performances by the D. J. Stable filly in Kentucky were not a surprise.

“She showed us a lot before she even ran,” he said. “I thought her first two races have been impressive. And then even since coming back here she's trained tremendous. She reminds me, and you don't have them come around that often, of the Wonder Gadots, the Classic Empires (Pioneerof the Nile), the War of Wills (War Front).”

That is a serious statement from a Hall of Fame trainer, comparing Wonder Wheel to three of his recent stars. Wonder Gadot and Classic Empire were champions and War of Will was the rare winner of Grade I races on dirt and turf: the Preakness S. and the Maker's Mark Mile S.

“Yeah, I know,” Casse said, “and I worry about that a little bit, saying that with only two starts. But that's what she's shown me.”

Wonder Wheel was on a short list of prospects developed by a bloodstock advisor for Casse at the Keeneland September 2021 yearling sale.

“Then I go around and pick and one of the things that intrigued me about her was she reminds me of [MSW & GISP] Make Mischief, and that was by Into Mischief,” Casse said. “They had this similar build and similar look. That was one of the things and I was like, 'Yeah, I like this filly.' So we bought her. Obviously, she is expensive at $275,000, but not for an Into Mischief.”

Make Mischief, a New York-bred, was a seven-time winner, who had five graded stakes placings.

Wonder Wheel has worked five times at Saratoga. She turned in a bullet five-furlong–best of 34–breeze in :59.40 on Aug. 19 and got a half-mile in :48.87 on Aug. 26.

Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez will be up for the Spinaway, replacing Tyler Gaffalione, who will be riding at Kentucky Downs.

Casse said he has not second-guessed his decision to give Wonder Wheel a long stretch between races.

“I'm going to be nervous,” he said, “because when you think you have a good one, you get nervous.”

Six years ago, Casse used a similar approach with Classic Empire, who broke his maiden May 4, won the GIII Bashford Manor S. July 2 and began his fall campaign in the GI Hopeful S. Sept. 5.

“Of course, it didn't work so well with Classic Empire because he made a right-hand turn coming out in the Hopeful,” Casse said, smiling, “but I purposely gave her some time.”

Classic Empire, the 8-5 favorite, wheeled at the start and dropped Irad Ortiz, Jr. He went on to win the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity and the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and was voted the 2-year-old male champion.

“My plan is if all things go well, she goes there, she goes to the [GI] Alcibiades and she goes to the Breeders' Cup,” Casse said. “That would be five starts and that's plenty. I'm a chess player.”

 6th-SAR, $88K, Msw, 2yo, (S), 6f, 3:55 p.m. ET

Ed & Susie Orr picked up Impressor (Classic Empire), bred by Chester & Mary Broman, for $335,000 out of April's OBS Sale following a breeze in :10 flat. Out of the GISP mare Misty Rosette (Stormin Fever), Impressor is a half-brother to six winners including Mr. Beer Goggles (Unbridled's Song) who earned nearly $300K. Misty Rosette is a full-sister to GSW Storm Wolf and a half-sister to none other than Littleprincessemma (Yankee Gentleman), who produced Triple Crown hero American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) as well as GISW Chasing Yesterday (Tapit) and GISP American Cleopatra (Pioneerof the Nile).

Breaking one post further out is Mama's Gold (Bolt d'Oro), who is a half-brother to a pair of stakes horses in MSW Rotknee (Runhappy) and MSP Lookin for Trouble (Into Mischief). The former was a sharp second-out winner here a year ago and has since taken three state-bred stakes, most recently annexing the Ontario County S. at Finger Lakes June 29 by double digits. The dam is a half-sister to GSP A Freud of Mama (Freud) and this is also the family of GISW Haynesfield (Speightstown). Mama's Gold recently posted a bullet from the gate over Belmont's training track, going three furlongs in :35 2/5 (1/4) Aug. 8.

Danny Gargan's Ramblin' Wreck (Redesdale) is a $140,000 SARAUG yearling and half-brother to co-owner Reeves Thoroughbred Racing's Dakota Gold (Freud), who debuted a sharp winner on the dirt here last year before annexing the lucrative Nownownow S. on the turf at Monmouth. He is out of a half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Dakota Phone (Zavata). TJCIS PPs

From the first crop of Cloud Computing, Storming Machine  debuts Thursday for trainer John Sadler. West Point Thoroughbredsand & Talla Racing purchased the bay colt for $560,000 out of the OBS March sale following a monster breeze completed in :9.4. He was previously a $50,000 FTKJUL yearling.

Further to the outside for Jerry Hollendorfer is Colonel Vargo (Distorted Humor), the first foal out of GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint runner-up Ami's Mesa (Sky Mesa). His dam is a half-sister to GSW Ami's Holiday (Harlan's Holiday) from the family of champion 3-year-old colt in Canada Amis Gizmo (Giant Gizmo) and GSW Ami's Flatter (Flatter). Colonel Vargo was purchased by Dennis January for the relatively modest sum of $100,000 at Keeneland September.

Rexford (Tapiture) sold for $160,000 at OBS April after working in :10.1. He is a half-brother to GSP Proverb (Flatter) and his multiple stakes-winning dam is a half-sister to GISP Concave (Colonel John).

Wound Up (Mendelssohn) represents the interesting owner/trainer combination of Reddam Racing and Michael McCarthy. The $120,000 KEESEP yearling blossomed into a $280,000 OBSAPR pick-up after a powerful :20.3 move. Wound Up's dam Banker's Buy (Distorted Humor) was a New York-bred stakes horse, mostly routing, and her half-siblings included precocious Astoria S. winner Glacken's Gal (Smoke Glacken), who in turn produced ill-fated Grade II winner Live Lively (Medaglia d'Oro). Beautiful Empire Streaks Home in Star Shoot

Beautiful Empire (Classic Empire)'s furious kick carried the day for conditioner Mark Casse, rallying from last to lead home a 1-2-3 finish for the Mark Casse barn in a brisk rendition of the Star Shoot S. at Woodbine.

The filly was far back in her first two starts over conventional dirt at Churchill Downs before breaking her maiden Dec. 10 over the synthetic at Turfway Park to conclude her juvenile season. The chestnut began her year with a close runner-up effort Jan. 8 at the venue on first-time Lasix and finished third in a stacked rendition of the Valdale S. Feb. 12 and most recently overcame a bump at the start of a local allowance Apr. 16 to draw clear by four lengths.

Allowed to settle after the break here, the 7-2 third choice tracked from last early and quickly made up ground from that rail spot coming into the lane. Under right-hand urging from Emma-Jayne Wilson, Beautiful Empire kicked into high gear in the final furlong to clear rivals and win by 1 1/2 lengths over Aubrieta (Speightster). Diabolic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) rounded out the Casse trifecta. The time for the six-furlongs was only just off the track record set by the venerable Pink Lloyd (Old Forester).

“I was actually angling to go to the outside, and the rail kind of opened up,” said Wilson post race. “Good horses, when you ask them, they run. And that's exactly what happened. She's been running lights out the whole winter. She was primed for a big effort. It was a big effort last time and she stepped up again today.”

The victress is her dam's first black-type earner and second winner from three to race. She has a 2-year-old half-brother by American Pharoah. Humor Me Colonel is expecting a foal by Munnings this season. She is also the fourth stakes winner for her young sire (by Pioneerof the Nile).
