Runhappy Travers Workers Out in Force Saturday

One week out from the GI Runhappy Travers S., major contenders for the 3-year-old centerpiece were out in force at the Spa Saturday morning.

Gold Square's GI Arkansas Derby and GI TVG.com Haskell S. winner Cyberknife (Gun Runner) breezed five-eighths in 1:00 (6/17) over Saratoga's main track.

“Excellent move, galloped out great and cooled out good,” trainer Brad Cox said. “We're all set. He's doing about as well as he can do and we are excited about the race.”

Trainer Chad Brown breezed several Runhappy Travers Day hopefuls over the main track Saturday, led by GI Toyota Blue Grass S. winner and GII Jim Dandy S. second-place finisher Zandon (Upstart), who covered five furlongs in 1:00.65 (7/17).

The GI Preakness S. hero and Jim Dandy fourth Early Voting (Gun Runner), piloted by Jose Ortiz, drilled five-eighths in 1:01 (11/17) in company with narrow GII Amsterdam S. runner-up Accretive (Practical Joke), who is targeting the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial.

Travers-bound Curlin S. winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Artorius (Arrogate), with Irad Ortiz, Jr. up, went a half-mile in :47 (5/80) with GISW Search Results (Flatter), who is targeting the GI Personal Ensign S. on Runhappy Travers Day.

“I thought all of the Travers horses worked super,” Brown said. “The track was a lot faster after the break today and a lot faster than it has been for the whole meet. We'll see what role that plays in the preparation of horses in the afternoon. I know that's an observation that everyone is going to tell you who has been training on it.”

Brown added, “I'm very excited about it [Travers]. I feel very grateful. These horses are hard to come by. It's just the reality. To have three in here, I am hoping one of them can get it done.”

Brown also breezed MGISW and Haskell third 'Rising Star' Jack Christopher (Munnings) five-eighths in :59.80 (4/17) in company to the outside of state-bred allowance-winning 3-year-old colt Key Point (Into Mischief). He is targeting the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial.

“Jack Christopher did that well within himself,” Brown said. “He's back to his old self after being a tick sluggish out of the Haskell. He has been working a little bit stronger and I was pleased with that.”

Iowa Derby winner Ain't Life Grand (Not This Time) breezed a bullet half-mile in :45.88 (1/80) Saturday over the Saratoga main track in preparation for the Runhappy Travers.

“I thought it was a very good work,” trainer Kelly Von Hemel said. “That track was playing a little bit faster today than what it has been so the time was a little quicker than we anticipated. But he did everything like we wanted and well within himself. He came back great and we're very happy with it.”

Chad Brown Arrested in Saratoga on ‘Obstruction of Breathing’ Charge

Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown was arrested Wednesday in Saratoga Springs and charged with criminal obstruction of breathing, a misdemeanor. On Thursday, Brown, who spent the night in jail, entered a not guilty plea at his arraignment and was ordered to reappear in court on Sept. 2. Cash bail was $2,500.

According to the website of attorney Andrew DeLuca, “New York state defines the crime of obstruction of breathing as the intent to impede the normal breathing or circulation of the blood by applying pressure to the throat or neck or blocking the nose or mouth of another person. These charges usually result from domestic incidents between couples.”

Criminal obstruction of breathing is class A misdemeanor. Upon conviction of a class A misdemeanor, a court may sentence an individual to a maximum of one year in jail or three years probation.

According to a handwritten statement from the alleged victim, who was not named, an encounter with Brown turned violent after she entered his house and found him in bed with another female. The statement reads: “On August 17, 2022 at around 11 pm, I went to the house of Chad Brown, my on again off again significant other. I have a key to the house, so I let myself in. I went to his room and saw another female in bed with him. I confronted him on that and he got up and pushed me down some stairs. I fought him down the hallway and he pinned me to the floor and started choking me. He applied pressure to my neck while it was against the floor. I was able to push him off of me and get up. Chad then pushed me out the door and I left and came to the police station.”

Brown was handcuffed while in court and was wearing cargo shorts and a black Pink Floyd t-shirt. According to reporting from Subrina Dhammi of WNYT television, Brown's attorney, Joseph Gerstenzang, told the court that Brown was left with no option but to defend himself after the woman broke into his house. On Twitter, Dhammi wrote that the judge, Francine Vero, did not believe the claims made by Brown's attorney. “This court is not in the business of accusing domestic violence victims,” said the judge, according to Dhammi's report.

Gerstenzang did not return a phone call from the TDN.

Brown entered Wednesday with 27 wins at the meet, making him the leading trainer. He had two horses entered and neither was scratched. Brown was seeking to win the Saratoga title for the fifth time.  In 2020, he set a Saratoga record with 46 wins.

“NYRA is aware of the charges brought against trainer Chad Brown today and will defer additional comment on this matter to the Saratoga Springs Police Department,” said NYRA spokesman Patrick McKenna.

Because the investigation is on-going, police spokesman Sgt. Paul Veitch said he was unable to provide details of the incident, including where it took place and the name of the alleged victim. He did say that Brown and the victim were “acquaintances.”

Heavy Hitters Work in Preparation for Runhappy Travers Card

A host of probable starters for the GI Runhappy Travers S. at Saratoga recorded works at the Spa Saturday as they each turn their attention to the 1 1/4-mile historic test for sophomores Aug. 27.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher watched runaway GIII Dwyer S. winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Charge It (Tapit) soar through an “awesome” five-furlong breeze over the main track, completing the solo exercise in 1:01.01 (5/27).

“Super work. Loved the way he did it, moving great and galloped out really strongly on a track that's not real fast,” said Pletcher.

“I don't think he's going to win by 23,” said Pletcher, with a laugh. “[But] I think he's very confident and he's doing well. Mentally, he's made big strides, so he's a horse that I think has continued to develop and get better and better. This morning's work was another indication of that.”

Also on the tab for Pletcher was GI Alabama S. probable Nest (Curlin), who Pletcher had considered for the Travers but ultimately said the Alabama Aug. 20 is the more likely target. The dual Grade I winner and GI Belmont S. runner-up breezed a half-mile in :50.60 (71/86) in company with Saratoga debut maiden winner Up to the Mark (Not This Time) (:50.02; 53/86).

“I thought she did very well. [She] went a little bit easy the first part and picked it up at the finish and galloped out really well,” said Pletcher. “She seems to be holding her form. We did talk about it [the Travers], but we just felt like as long as she was ready to run back in the Alabama, a mile and a quarter was perfect for her. We felt like it was too good of a spot to pass up.”

Chad Brown breezed several Runhappy Travers Day hopefuls over the main track Saturday led by GISW Zandon (Upstart), who covered a half-mile in :49.77 (44/86), while GI Preakness S. winner Early Voting (Gun Runner) drilled a half-mile in :49.78 (47/86) in company with GII Amsterdam S. runner-up Accretive (Practical Joke), who is targeting the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial. Runhappy Travers contender and Curlin S. winner 'TDN Rising Star' Artorius went an easy solo half-mile in :50.09 (56/86).

“It went great. They all worked good. Zandon went first and he went a half of a mile in :49 and change, out in 1:01 and change. He looked really good,” Brown said. “Early Voting went a half of a mile outside of Accretive, who will run in the H. Allen Jerkens. They went excellent. I thought Early Voting was really moving over the track today. He is very much in consideration for the Travers after this work today.”

Brown also breezed GISW and Haskell third 'TDN Rising Star' Jack Christopher (Munnings) five-eighths in 1:00.80 (3/27) in company to the outside of allowance-winning 3-year-old colt Key Point (Into Mischief). He is targeting the seven-furlong GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial on the Runhappy Travers undercard.

“Jack Christopher really picked it up this week. I was very pleased with that because he worked a little slow last week with some traffic and stuff,” Brown said. “That kind of got botched a little bit. So, he needed to do a stronger piece of work today and I thought we went super.”

The Iowa-bred Travers hopeful Ain't Life Grand (Not This Time) had his first work on Saturday over the Saratoga main track since arriving from Prairie Meadows. The Iowa Derby winner coasted through a half-mile in :48.23 (13/86).

“He's settled in and doing really good. He worked good this morning, so, so far so good,” said trainer Kelly Von Hemel. “I'm not there, but everybody that was there was happy with the work. It was a solid time and everything was good.”

Cyberknife (Gun Runner), a narrow winner of the GI TVG.com Haskell S., worked five-eighths in 1:01.05 (8/27) over the main track Saturday in company with the 4-year-old Supremacy (Constitution) (1:01.90) for trainer Brad Cox.

Cloud Computing Firster Runs To Money, Rising Star Honors

No secret on the board as the betting public poured into him to the tune of $1.65-1 favoritism, I'm Very Busy (c, 2, Cloud Computing–Two Kisses, by Kissin Kris) was given the most confident of confident steers by Flavien Prat and finished like a freight train to garner the 'TDN Rising Star' badge on career debut in the Saturday opener from Saratoga.

Taken hold of soon after the start, the $50,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Yearling turned $135,000 OBS March breezer (:10 2/5) lagged back with just two rivals behind him for the opening couple of furlongs as longshot Lord of the Navy (Lord Nelson) showed the way through a half in :49.17. Creeping closer while being nursed along three-eighths of a mile from home, I'm Very Busy was finally cut loose by the Frenchman in upper stretch, and the Pennsylvania-bred had so much wind in his sails that he could have gone outside or in and the outcome would likely have been the same. When the daylight appeared one off the fence in upper stretch, I'm Very Busy leveled out beautifully, raced up to 11-1 Baie Longue (American Pharoah) and raced clear for a decisive 3 3/4-length victory. He covered his final 2 1/2 furlongs in a very slick :28.80, his final sixteenth of a mile in a spectacular :5.60 while never asked for his very best, then galloped out powerfully around the turn.

I'm Very Busy is the third winner for his freshman sire (by Maclean's Music), who gave trainer Chad Brown his first Classic in the 2017 GI Preakness S. A half-brother to Grand Kisses (Grand Reward), SW, $157,286, I'm Very Busy is out of a full-sister to SW Kiss Me Twice and a half to Answer Lively (Lively One), winner of the 1998 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile en route to champion 2-year-old male honors.
