Program Trading (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}–Dreamlike {GB}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) and Webslinger (Constitution) battled down to the wire, but it was the Klaravich Stables-colorbearer who would claim victory in the GI Saratoga Derby Invitational S. in just his third career start. Far Bridge (English Channel), winner of the GI Belmont Derby Invitational S. last out, would pick up third.

McKulick Denies War Like Goddess In Glens Falls

The thoughtfully named McKulick (GB) (f, 4, Frankel {GB}–Astrelle {Ire}, by Makfi {GB}), who has always been special to the Chad Brown team, added another feather to her cap with a late-flying victory in Thursday's GII Glens Falls S. at Saratoga, denying defending two-time Glens Falls victress–as well as MGISW and 1-2 favorite–War Like Goddess (English Channel) an historic three-peat in the process.

When the gates flew in the Glens Falls, 45-1 Elegant Taste (Oxbow) emerged from the early fray with the lead. McKulick raced midpack in a good spot as most eyes focused on War Like Goddess in third as she visibly fought Joel Rosario, tossing her head repeatedly. After a first quarter in :24.84, War Like Goddess continued to appear agitated as Rosario restrained her. Tucked in on the rail behind the favorite, McKulick looked a far different matter as she appeared relaxed and comfortable. Things continued much the same through the half in :50.01 and six panels in 1:15.29 until the field bunched up considerably at the 1:39.53 mile marker. Last-out June 17 GIII Eatontown S. runner-up Vergara (Noble Mission {GB}) dismissed pacesetter Elegant Taste on the turn and took command as War Like Goddess loomed menacingly to her outside. With a sixteenth to go, War Like Goddess collared Vergara but it was McKulick who tipped out, swapped leads repeatedly, and bore down to find the wire first. She won by a neck as War Like Goddess held for second and April's GIII Orchid S. winner Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}) closed to steal third. Final time for the 12 furlongs on the inner turf was 2:27.05.

“Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] rode a masterful race,” said winning trainer Brown. “Early on when War Like Goddess had position ahead of us and was a little rank and such, he carefully stayed behind her. When she came off the rail down the backside before the final turn, Irad cleverly got off the rail as well and followed her and stayed away from the horse [Elegant Taste] that was stopping on the rail. All those moves, particularly that one down the backside really made the difference today.”

McKulick's biggest lifetime score came last summer in the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S., while her last win was in the GIII Jockey Club Oaks Invitational S. last September at the Belmont at Aqueduct meet prior to an October runner-up finish in the GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. at Keeneland. Put away for just over six months, the bay reappeared with an off-the board finish in the May 5 GIII Modesty S. at Churchill and a third in the GI New York S. June 9 at Belmont.

Brown said McKulick would likely head next to the GII Flower Bowl S. on Sept. 2 at the Spa at a furlong shorter. That race offers a “Win and You're In” berth to the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

 

Pedigree Notes:

McKulick is one of 116 black-type winners in just eight crops of racing age for sire sensation Frankel (GB), who also has 80 graded/group winners. The majority of Frankel's top horses campaign in Europe, although five of the stakes winners by the Banstead Manor Stud stallion have reached the graded level in the U.S. McKulick ranks at the top of that list as his sole American Grade I winner to date, although the son of Galileo (Ire) also has a Canadian Grade I winner in Wild Beauty (GB).

While McKulick is Frankel's only black-type winner out of a daughter of Makfi (GB), who has 15 stakes winners as a broodmare sire and was sold to Japan prior to the 2017 breeding season, Makfi's sire, Dubawi (Ire), has proven to be quite a prolific cross with Frankel. The pair are responsible for eight of Frankel's black-type winners, including champions Adayar (Ire) and Homeless Songs (Ire), as well as this summer's G1 Prince of Wales's S. winner Mostahdaf (Ire) and two other graded/group winners.

McKulick's dam has also produced GSW-Eng & GSW-Ire Just Beautiful (GB) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}), as well as GSW-Ger Fearless King (GB) (Kingman {GB}). She has an unraced 2-year-old filly by Calyx (GB) and a yearling filly by Pinatubo (Ire).

Friday’s Graded Turf Stakes Get The Weekend Started Early

With the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, a bevy of graded stakes–marked by Saturday's GI Whitney S.–plus, the annual Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale which begins Monday, Upstate New York once again makes its case as the Thoroughbred fulcrum. To get the weekend started early, we have a pair of Friday graded turf stakes scheduled which will crown winners.

First, the $400,000 GIII Saratoga Oaks Invitational S. for 3-year-old fillies serves as the middle sparkler in NYRA's Fasig-Tipton Turf Tiara series. Since Aspen Grove (Ire) (Justify) has elected to take on the boys in Saturday's GI Saratoga Derby, Papilio (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) will not have the opportunity to avenge her third-place finish when the pair faced one another in the GI Belmont Oaks July 8, a race which Aspen Grove won. Since arriving from Ireland, the Mark Casse trainee has continued to be a mark of consistency against graded company with her best finish coming with a victory in the GII Appalachian S. at Keeneland back in April.

Opposing her bid to wear the tiara will be a number of European challengers, including Caroline Street (No Nay Never) and American Sonja (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) from Joseph O'Brien's yard. The former is a Group 3 winner in Ireland and she was well beaten last time out by Blue Rose Cen (Churchill {Ire}) June 18 in the G1 French Oaks at Chantilly. Also present here, from that same race, is Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}), who finished a respectable fifth. Trained by Jean-Phillippe Dubois, she was second in the G1 Prix Saint Alary at Longchamp May 14.

As for North American-based entries, Solo Album (Curlin), also from Casse's shedrow, won the GIII Selene S. July 1 at Woodbine, and Selenaia (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) from Jonathan Thomas's barn, who comes to New York after winning the GIII Honeymoon S. June 10 at Santa Anita, arrive in-form.

To mark the induction ceremony into horse racing's hallowed pantheon, the $500,000 GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. for 3-year-old colts going a mile on the Inner Turf brings together an interesting mix of American and European invaders.

Trainer Chad Brown saddles three entries with GISP Appraise (Ire) Kodiac {GB}), Mischievous Angel (Into Mischief) and Carl Spackler (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), while Graham Motion sends GSW and GISP Nagirroc (Lea) to the post after the bay colt finished third in the GIII Manila S. July 7 at Belmont Park. The winner of that race, More Than Looks (More Than Ready) from the stable of Cherie DeVaux, is also present.

The European contingent includes Ocean Vision (Ire) (U S Navy Flag), who has competed in Ireland, France and Qatar and is trained by Godolphin Flying Start program grad Tim Donworth, and Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) for Charlie Appleby, who will look to harness some of that late speed that he flashed the last time he was in North America when he won the GI Summer S. at Woodbine as a juvenile.

Cody’s Wish, Zandon Work for Whitney; Elite Power, Forte Fine Sunday

Godolphin's Cody's Wish (Curlin) had his final work ahead of the Aug. 5 GI Whitney S. Sunday at Saratoga, going four furlongs in :48.28 (9/69) over the Oklahoma training track. With Neil Poznansky aboard, the multiple Grade I winner clocked the first quarter-mile in :24 2/5 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:01 4/5 and seven furlongs in 1:27.

“I thought it was perfect. If there is such a thing as a perfect work,” trainer Bill Mott said. “Neil did a perfect job. The warm-up was good, the breeze went well, he went off easily enough. He was off in :12 and 2 or 3. He came home well. He let him off the bridle a little bit at the eighth pole and he finished up his last quarter very nicely. We didn't make him gallop out too much today, obviously. We're right on top of the race.”

Cody's Wish will be looking for his seventh straight victory while seeking his first win beyond a mile in the nine-furlong Whitney, which is a 'Win and You're In' challenge race for the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. He is coming off a win in the June 10 GI Metropolitan H. and will look to be the first horse to record the Met Mile-Whitney double since fellow Godolphin colorbearer Frosted in 2016.

Another Mott trainee on a win streak, Elite Power (Curlin), who extended his string of victories to eight with a gritty victory in Saturday's GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. was doing well Sunday morning, according to his trainer.

“He looked great this morning,” Mott said. “I was very impressed just because I feel that when you have a sloppy or muddy track like that, it gives the advantage to the horse three in front turning for home. If you have to make up that much ground on a sloppy or muddy track, it can be difficult, so I give the horse a lot of credit for being able to do that. The horse he beat was running and he's a very good horse, too. He's in good form. I have to be pleased and I am pleased.”

Elite Power is expected to start next in the Aug. 26 GI Forego S.

Also exiting his victory at Saratoga Saturday in fine shape was GII Jim Dandy S. winner Forte (Violence).

“He came back very well and his energy level is good,” said trainer Todd Pletcher. “He had a well-deserved nap this morning and I liked the way he looked last night after the race and this morning.”

Forte remains on target for the Aug. 26 GI Travers S. where he will attempt to follow in the footsteps of Pletcher's previous winners of the race, Flower Alley and Stay Thirsty, both of whom won the Jim Dandy before taking the Midsummer Derby.

“It's exciting and we've been fortunate that both our Travers winners came out of the Jim Dandy,” Pletcher said. “We'd love to do it again.”

Jeff Drown's Zandon (Upstart), also aiming for the Whitney, worked a half-mile in :49.24 (24/69) Sunday over the Spa's main track.

“The breeze went super and the horse is doing great. I'm looking forward to running him,” said trainer Chad Brown, who is in search of his first Whitney win.

Winner of last year's GI Toyota Blue Grass S. and third in the GI Kentucky Derby, Zandon was second in last year's Jim Dandy and third in the Travers. He comes into the Whitney off a runner-up effort behind Cody's Wish in the Met Mile.

“I was very pleased with his effort [in the Met Mile],” Brown said. “He showed a lot of heart to be second. Clearly, he was second best in the race. Cody's Wish is arguably the best dirt horse in training in this country, so a lot of respect for him. Our horse is doing fine and I think he's better around two turns. He's got a tall order here. It probably won't be a big field, but it's a very strong field with Cody's Wish and some other top horses. He's got his work cut out for him, but I really like the way the horse is going and I like him at a mile and an eighth. I think that's his best distance. I'm just hoping he runs the race of his life and is able to spring an upset.”
