Flavius Best In Lure Stakes At Saratoga

Juddmonte homebred Flavius, with Flavien Prat in the irons, wired Saturday's $120,000 Fasig-Tipton Lure, at 1 1/16-miles on the Mellon turf for older horses at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Trainer Chad Brown, who captured his 2000th career win on Friday, saddled a trio of Lure starters comprised of Value Proposition, Delaware, and Flavius, who entered from a runner-up effort in the Seek Again on May 22 at Belmont Park.

Value Proposition, racing for purse money only after losing a front shoe on the way to the gate, broke well from post 3 and secured a ground-saving position as Flavius exited post 4 with intent, establishing the opening quarter-mile in 24.52 seconds on the firm turf.

Flavius maintained his lead down the backstretch through a half-mile in :48.99 with Tell Your Daddy providing pressure from the outside in second position as Value Proposition continued to enjoy a pocket trip. Fighting Seabee advanced up the rail as Value Proposition angled out into the final turn to launch his bid, while Hall of Famer John Velazquez asked Tell Your Daddy for his best run.

With many rivals lining up at the top of the lane, Flavius never relinquished as the bay ridgling responded to Prat's encouragement and continued to find more en route to a 1 1/2-length score in a final time of 1:41.53.

“I am so appreciative for this horse. Juddmonte are very good clients of mine,” Brown said. “They are very patient with this horse and decided to leave him in training for another year. It took a little time to get him back in form, but I loved his race today. I appreciate Flavien taking the initiative of taking it to them early. This horse switched off nicely down the backside and it seemed when he had his ears up moving comfortably down the backside, so I knew he had a big chance. He ran lights out today. It was an impressive performance.”

By War Front and out of the multiple graded-stakes winning Dynaformer mare Starformer, Flavius launched his career in Ireland with trainer Dermot Weld. He joined Brown's stable in 2019 and captured the Tourist Mile in September at Kentucky Downs in his fourth start for the four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer.

Flavius launched his 6-year-old season with a close fourth in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile in March at Santa Anita ahead of his Seek Again effort.

“I didn't see a lot of speed in the race,” Prat said. “I wanted to be in the race and I found myself on the lead. He was traveling super and he kicked on really well. When I rode him in the Kilroe, it was against a good group of horses. I thought everything worked out well today.”

Tell Your Daddy stayed on strong to complete the exacta by 1 1/2-lengths over Value Proposition. Rounding out the order of finish were Dreams of Tomorrow, Delaware, South Bend, Fighting Seabee, and Temple. Midnight Tea Time, Guildsman, and main-track-only entrant Tacitus were scratched.

“He ran real good and gave me everything he could,” Velazquez said of Tell Your Daddy. “We got a good position. The winner was a little bit better than us.”

Bred in Kentucky by his owner, Flavius banked $66,000 in victory while improving his record to 12-4-3-1. Sent to post as the 6-5 favorite, he paid $4.70 for a $2 win ticket.

“This has a been a horse that we brought over here with expectations that he could move up to the next level, and he's gotten close to this level,” said Garrett O'Rourke, general manager of Juddmonte's American division. “I think today his race was perfect. It's nice to keep horses like this a little bit longer in training and when they reward you, it makes it worthwhile.”

Live racing resumes Sunday at Saratoga with a 10-race card featuring the $120,000 Fasig-Tipton De La Rose, the $200,000 Grade 2 Adirondack, and the $700,000 Grade 3 Saratoga Oaks Invitational. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern.

Digital Software Gives Chad Brown 2,000th Career Win

Trainer Chad Brown registered his 2,000th career win in Friday's 10th-race finale at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., when Digital Software netted a victory by a head under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. for owner Klaravich Stables in a 1 1/16-mile maiden claiming contest over the inner turf course.

Brown has won four Eclipse Awards as Outstanding Trainer and has compiled 15 Breeders' Cup victories in addition to Cloud Computing winning the 2017 Preakness. Brown has also won the Saratoga training title three times [2016, 2018-19].

A 42-year-old native of Mechanicville, N.Y., Brown was a 2001 graduate of Cornell University who worked for two Hall of Fame trainers, Shug McGaughey and Robert Frankel, before starting his own public stable in November 2007.

He recorded his 1,000th career victory at Saratoga in 2016. His 2,000th win came with a horse owned by Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables, one of his principal owners.

“We were rooting for the maiden 40 horse [Digital Software] like he was Bricks and Mortar at the Breeders' Cup just now,” Brown said. “I was actually saying that to Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] out on the track and he smiled and said, 'I rode him like he was him.'

“I'm very appreciative and reflecting on all the people that contributed to this, but most of them are still working and some are not on site. So many people go into this, and you heard a lot of that at the Hall of Fame today from the inductees. It's all the way down to milestones like this, there's a lot of people that play a role in it from family to mentors and when you reach these milestones, I take a moment to reflect and appreciate all the people that made this happen.

“I'm running the ship and calling the shots, but I can't do it without all my wonderful co-workers, all the great horses and all the people that taught you along the way. There are so many things that go into it. I play one role – it's an important role – but far from the only role. It's a great thing to experience and hopefully it will sink in and my team can really appreciate it and move forward to try and get the next goal.”

“It is so great that we can be part of Chad's achievement of 2,000 wins,” said Klarman. “It's obvious that he's extraordinarily talented. This is so great and I am happy for him. He's fantastic. He's a gifted horseman and he is also a great friend.”

“I ride a lot for Chad and I have had a lot of success with him,” said Ortiz. “He's one of those guys who is always there for me and he's helped me a lot. I wish him all the best success and that he can continue having success. I respect him a lot and I enjoy everything he's done so far.”

Breeders’ Cup Winner Public Sector Finds Rail Spot To Prevail In Grade 2 Hall Of Fame Stakes

Public Sector (GB) emerged victorious from a relaxed rail trip in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes at Saratoga on Friday, Aug. 6. Jockey Flavien Prat got the Chad Brown favorite away from the gate well and seemed pointed for an early lead, but settled in along the rail and let Next and Wolfie's Dynaghost dictate the early pace for much of the one-mile contest on the inner turf. As the field began bunching up around the final turn, Public Sector seemed initially boxed in but found a gap along the rail and burst through, holding off a late challenge from Annex.

There was a stewards' inquiry into the stretch run, where Annex crossed over from the outside of rival Original under right handed urging from jockey Junior Alvarado. Original subsequently took a serious bobble and seemed to trip as though he caught the heels of Annex, and jockey Luis Saez pulled Original up before the finish line. Original was unsaddled and walked off the track alongside his groom, under his own power. There was no change to the order of finish as the result of the inquiry.

Annex was left up as second, with In Effect third and Next fourth. The final time for the mile was 1:35.03, with fractional times of 1:11.37, :47.56, and :23.91.

As the 4-5 favorite, Public Sector paid $3.80, $2.50, and $2.10.

Public Sector came to the race off a second-place finish in the Manila Stakes at Belmont (where he was second behind Original), and was last year's G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner. Klaravich Stables owns the 3-year-old son of Kingman (GB) and Montjeu (IRE) mare Parle Moi (IRE). Public Sector was bred in Great Britain by The Kathryn Stud. The colt was a $217,822 purchase by Klaravich from the Tattersalls October Sale, where he was consigned by Clearwater Stud.

Chad Brown, winning trainer of Public Sector (No. 2, $3.80*): “Our plan was to leave out of there with intention. It looked like there was a lot of speed on paper but make them go, get our spot and if they're going to go, go. If not, we'll be there. As it turned out, they actually weren't going. The 47 and 3 [half-mile] is solid but it's been dry here and in a graded race at Saratoga, that's not that fast for these horses. Flavien [Prat] does many things wonderfully and that was one of them. He gives you a chance to win by adapting to the pace right away. If you give him the right horse, he's going to deliver for you.”

On winning for Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables: “We've become very close friends and he's such a loyal supporter of our stable and he provides us with these wonderful horses like you saw today with Public Sector. He's a real sportsman and always does the right thing by the horse and he gets rewarded because of that.”

Flavien Prat, winning jockey aboard Public Sector (No. 2): “The first time I rode him, I was really close to the pace and he won a nice race [on June 4 at Belmont Park]. Last time, I think it was just a slow pace. I got stuck behind horses. He couldn't really bring me anywhere around the turn and I had to make up a lot of ground on the slow pace [second in the Manilla on July 4 at Belmont]. Today, we had a good draw and he broke well and put me in the race. The pace was a bit stronger and it worked out well.

“I thought I was going to be able to go around the leader, but then I saw the leader came out and I dropped in and had room.

“We were pretty much making the move together but when I really asked him to make the move, he responded well.”

Junior Alvarado, jockey aboard runner-up Annex (No. 1): “I was moving with Luis Saez [aboard No. 6, Original] and we both made the run. At the time, I was moving more forward than him and I felt him bump me on my rear end. I knew I was still straight in my path. After that, when he was out of there, I started coming again. My horse put in a good run today and I was happy with him.

“It may have cost me a few lengths but I didn't have much room on the inside. The winner had the trip and I really didn't have another way to go but just move outside.”

Luis Saez, rider aboard Original (No. 6) who did not finish the race: “The horse was OK. He just clipped heels.”

Eight Well-Matched Fillies Look to Ace Test

With the door to a divisional title slightly left ajar by Malathaat (Curlin)'s recent upset loss, eight evenly-matched sophomore fillies will line up in Saturday's GI Longines Test S. at Saratoga.

Slightly favored on the morning line is Klaravich Stables' Search Results (Flatter), who, if not for the length of a Malathaat neck, may herself be favored for champion 3-year-old filly honors as the calendar turns to the season's second half. A four-length debut victress Jan. 3 at Gulfstream, the $310,000 Keeneland September purchase repeated with a pair of scores in the Busher Invitational S. and GII Gazelle S. at Aqueduct before falling just short when runner-up in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks. She got right back to business with a hard-fought success in the GI Acorn S. June 5 at Belmont, a race out of which the second and third finishers will re-oppose.

The runner-up that day was Juddmonte Farms' Obligatory (Curlin), but the ascendant homebred may have run the best race, closing into a slow pace to miss by a half-length and getting her final quarter in a sharp :23.74. Prior to that, the gray was a visually-impressive maiden winner at Gulfstream, and after a disappointing fourth in the GII Twinspires.com Fair Grounds Oaks, upset the GII Eight Belles S. at 16-1 in a last-to-first flourish.

The top two from June 26's GII Mother Goose S. at Belmont also re-engage here. The winner that day, Shadwell Stable's Zaajel (Street Sense), was the longest shot on the board at 18-1, improving her career-high Beyer by 23 points to 96, while the runner-up, 'TDN Rising Star' Always Carina (Malibu Moon), suffered her first defeat after going two-for-two by a combined 13 3/4 lengths to start her career.

Overachieving Bella Sofia (Awesome Patriot) will get the acid test after two dominant scores in three starts to open her account. Crushing maiden special weight foes by 11 1/4 lengths debuting at 8-1 May 6 at Belmont, the $20,000 ran a good second when thrown into stakes waters in the Jersey Girl S. there June 6 and came right back to romp by 6 1/2 lengths over allowance rivals July 11 at Big Sandy.

Rounding out the field are Souper Sensational (Curlin), an impressive victress of the GIII Victory Ride S. last out July 10 at Belmont, Make Mischief (Into Mischief), third in both the Eight Belles and Acorn, and Illumination (Medaglia d'Oro), an eight-length maiden winner last out who will be previously-suspended trainer Bob Baffert's first starter at Saratoga since he was granted injunctive relief by a judge.
