2023 Belmont Fall Meet Will Again Be Run At Aqueduct

The New York Racing Association has released its 2023 racing schedule, which will include a return to Aqueduct for the traditional fall Belmont meet.

NYRA first moved the Belmont fall meet to Aqueduct this year so that tunnels could be built that would provide access to the infield. In 2023, moving the Belmont fall meet will allow for reconstruction of the three Belmont racing surfaces.

The 28-day Belmont at the Big A fall meet will open on Thursday, Sept. 14 and continue through Sunday, Oct. 29. Live racing will be conducted Thursday-Sunday throughout the Belmont at the Big A fall meet.

The 2023 Belmont spring-summer meet will still be held at Belmont. It will consist of 40 days of racing and go from May 4 through July 9. Live racing will generally be conducted Thursday-Sunday throughout the spring/summer meet.

The 2023 racing season will include 202 days of live racing, starting with the 44-day winter meet at Aqueduct, which will run from Jan. 1 through Mar. 26, with racing conducted Thursdays through Sundays until Feb. 12. For the remainder of the meet, racing will be held Friday through Sunday. The 19-day Aqueduct spring meet, which spans Thursday, Mar. 30 to Sunday, Apr. 30, will see live racing return to a Thursday-Sunday schedule.

There will be 40 days of racing at Saratoga with the meet kicking off Thursday, July 13 and continuing through Labor Day, Sept, 4. Racing at Saratoga will be conducted five days per week from Wednesday-Sunday with the exception of the six-day closing week.

The 2023 season will conclude with the 31-day Aqueduct fall meet which runs from Thursday, Nov. 2 through Sunday, Dec. 31, 2023.

Secretariat’s Legacy Calendar To Benefit Old Friends, Among Other Charities

A new calendar honoring Secretariat features his legendary daughter Weekend Surprise and her descendants. The Secretariat's Legacy calendar is the continuation of a series originally celebrating the last living sons and daughters of Secretariat (“Secretariat's Living Legends”), but with only one son and one daughter left, it was time to make a transition.

While the theme has changed, the goal is the same – to celebrate Secretariat through his descendants and raise much-needed funds for equine charities. For the second straight year, the beneficiaries are Bright Futures Farm, Old Friends and Victory Alliance Ranch.

The calendar series launched in 2018 has raised more than $22,000 for charities through 2021. “Racing fans, especially Secretariat fans, have loved the Living Legends calendars, and I hope they will enjoy this new take on Secretariat's legacy through his important descendants,” says writer/photographer Patricia McQueen, whose creative project is part of her research work on Secretariat as a sire.

The 2022 calendar is all about Weekend Surprise, and she is featured on the cover and in the January spread. Secretariat's stakes-winning daughter was 1992 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year, and her important descendants included in the calendar are:

Summer Squall, her son who won the 1990 Preakness Stakes;
A.P. Indy, her 1992 Horse of the Year son who went on to elite status as a sire;
Charismatic, the 1999 Horse of the Year by Summer Squall;
Mineshaft, the 2003 Horse of the Year by A.P. Indy;
Rags to Riches, A.P. Indy's champion daughter who won the 2007 Belmont Stakes;
Bernardini, the 2006 champion 3-year-old colt by A.P. Indy;
Honor Code, A.P. Indy's final champion, a member of his last crop;
Tapit, A.P. Indy's grandson who is a legendary sire himself;
California Chrome, a two-time Horse of the Year and great grandson of A.P. Indy; and
Justify, the 2018 Triple Crown winner and great-great grandson of A.P. Indy (and Storm Cat).

As in previous calendars, the Tony Leonard Collection continues to generously support the series with a beautiful photo of Secretariat after the Preakness Stakes with Ron Turcotte aboard. Mr. Turcotte has kindly agreed to autograph a limited number of calendars to help raise even more funds.

As noted, all profits from the sale of the calendar are allocated to three worthy organizations: Bright Futures Farm, an equine rescue and sanctuary accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance; Old Friends, another TAA-accredited organization; and Victory Alliance Ranch, an equine rescue and sanctuary supporting veterans and special needs children.

Coady Photography Will Donate Percentage Of Authentic Calendar Sales To Old Friends

Coady Photography will donate 25 percent of all sales in December of its 2021 calendar honoring 2020 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Authentic to Old Friends Equine. The calendar is currently on sale for $30 and can be purchased at www.coadyphotography.com.

The 9” x 12” wall calendar features stunning Coady Photography pictures, some never before seen, from both the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs and Nov. 7 Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland. The Into Mischief colt owned by Spendthrift Farm LLC, MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables LLC and Starlight Racing and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert is only the fourth horse in history to win the Derby and Classic in the same year, following American Pharoah (2015), Unbridled (1990) and Sunday Silence (1989).

2021 Calendar Celebrates Secretariat’s Last Living Sons and Daughters

Continuing a series celebrating Secretariat’s legacy through his remaining offspring, a 2021 calendar featuring the last living sons and daughters of the legendary 1973 Triple Crown winner is now available. It’s the fourth annual fund-raising calendar in what has become a tradition of generating revenue for equine charities, a group that now includes Bright Futures Farm, Old Friends, and Victory Alliance Ranch.

“It is humbling to see how the racing industry, and Secretariat fans in particular, have embraced this calendar series,” said writer/photographer Patricia McQueen, whose creative project is part of her research work on Secretariat as a sire. “The first three calendars have raised more than $14,000 for the designated charities, funds sorely needed to provide homes and special care for horses in need.”
