Casa Creed Scores Repeat In ‘Win & You’re In’ Fourstardave

After stalking the early pace under Luis Saez, Casa Creed unleashed a furious stretch rally, caught familiar rival Annapolis late, and drove past to notch a second consecutive win in the $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap (G1) on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course.

Sent off at 9-5 odds, the 7-year-old son of Jimmy Creed was winning for the ninth time from 33 career starts. He entered off a triumph over Annapolis in Kelso (G3) July 16 at the Spa and once again vanquished that foe.

Trained by Bill Mott for LRE Racing and JEH Racing Stable, Casa Creed returned $5.70 after covering the one-mile turf test in 1:34.20.

Annapolis, who took charge from pacesetter See My Cottage in the midstretch, hung on for second, and Brazilian-bred Ice Chocolat finished third.

The Fourstardave is a “Win And You're In” qualifier. With Saturday's victory, Casa Creed earned an automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) in November at Santa Anita Park

Bred in Kentucky by Silver Springs Stud, Casa Creed was a $105,000 purchase at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He is out of the unraced Bellamy Road mare Achalaya.

Casa Creed Picks Up Second Fourstardave and His Spot at the Breeders’ Cup

Mage ‘A Little More In The Bridle’ In Penultimate Breeze Ahead Of Travers

Grade 1 Kentucky Derby winner Mage logged his penultimate breeze on Friday at Saratoga Race Course in preparation for the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers on August 26. The chestnut son of Good Magic covered six furlongs in 1:12.98 over the Spa's main track around 7:45 a.m. under regular exercise rider J.J. Delgado.

“He did pretty good. He was a little more in the bridle today,” said Gustavo Delgado, Jr., son and assistant to trainer Gustavo Delgado. “His exercise rider was happy about it and the best thing is how he came back. He took a couple rounds [cooling out] and that was it. It's always good to see that.”

Owned by OGMA Investments, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing and CMNWLTH, Mage put in a more serious effort than last week when covering five furlongs in 1:01.03 over a Spa main track that held some moisture after steady rains in the days leading up to the breeze.

Delgado, Jr. said he expects Mage to have one more maintenance breeze next week ahead of the 1 1/4-mile Travers.

“It will depend on the weather, but hopefully Friday on the main track again,” said Delgado, Jr.

In addition to his win in the Kentucky Derby, Mage boasts two runner-up efforts in Grade 1s this year in the July 22 Haskell at Monmouth Park and the April 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park where he was defeated one length by the reigning Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Forte. He was a closing third two starts back in the Grade 1 Preakness 2 1/4 lengths back of the victorious National Treasure, who he will likely face again in the Travers.

The Delgado barn will look to kick off their Spa stakes action on a high note in Saturday's $150,000 Galway, a 5 1/2-furlong Mellon turf sprint for sophomore fillies, with Isabel Alexandra, who seeks her first stakes victory for owners Restrepo, OGMA Investments, Global Racing Stables and Inverdeco. The daughter of Expert Eye was a last-out winner by a neck on June 24 in a five-furlong allowance over the Horseshoe Indianapolis turf.

Delgado, Jr. said he is hopeful Isabel Alexandra is back to her best form after finishing fifth in her two other starts this year in the one-mile Ginger Brew in January at Gulfstream Park and an off-the-turf allowance sprinting five furlongs in May at Pimlico Race Course.

“She's doing pretty good and we like her in here,” said Delgado, Jr. “When horses get here to Saratoga, they start improving and you see things in them you didn't see before. We had tried to get her to go longer at Gulfstream and then we made a mistake in Pimlico when they took the race off the turf and we still raced her. We wanted to regroup and put her in a good spot to get confidence, which she did, so now we'll see. It's a tough race.”

Isabel Alexandra enters the Galway from a sharp half-mile bullet in 47.60 seconds on July 30 over Saratoga's Oklahoma turf training track. Delgado, Jr. said he was impressed with the work and is pleased to have the opportunity to breeze horses over turf at Saratoga.

“She likes it here and she was able to breeze on the turf, and that helped,” said Delgado, Jr. “We have galloping on turf in Lexington, but we can't breeze them. It's 100 percent a big plus to have that here.”

Isabel Alexandra boasts a lifetime record of 6-2-1-0 with $60,785 in earnings. The Irish-bred filly is out of the Dutch Art mare Duchess Power, a half-sister to multiple group-winner and French stallion Slade Power. She will be ridden from post 3 by Reylu Gutierrez with a morning line assessment of 8-1.

Colonial: Fev Rover, Didia Vie for Favoritism In Beverly D.

Seven fillies and mares will go to post in the Grade 1, $500,000 Beverly D. Stakes on Saturday at Colonial Downs. This year's 33rd running of the Beverly D. will mark the first time the race has been run in Virginia. The 1 3/16-mile test over the outer turf is carded as the ninth race of 11 on Saturday with a first post of 1:30 p.m. EDT. Post time for the Beverly D. is 5:55 p.m.

The Beverly D. is a Breeders' Cup Challenge “Win and You're In” race for the 2023 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf to be held this November at Santa Anita Park, and is joined on Saturday's spectacular card by the G1 Arlington Million for older horses and the G2 $500,000 Secretariat Stakes for 3-year-olds. With $2 million on the line in stakes purses alone, Saturday promises to be the richest day of horse racing in Virginia history.

Tracy Farmer's Fev Rover has been made the 2-1 morning line favorite and will start from the rail.  The 5-year-old Irish-bred made her U.S. debut last month in the G1 Diana at Saratoga, finishing third, beaten just half a length. She was a Group 2 winner in France and has won a pair of graded stakes events at Woodbine including this year's Grade 2 Nassau Stakes. Javier Castellano rides the daughter of Gutaifan for trainer Mark Casse.

The Argentine-bred Merribelle Stable's Didia, the 3-1 second choice, is the only horse in the field who has run at Colonial Downs previously. Last season, she made her U.S. debut over the local lawn winning an allowance event before following that with a score in the $150,000 Old Nelson Stakes here in New Kent. Since then she was second in the G1 New York Stakes at Belmont Park last time out. Before that, she added the G3 Modesty at Churchill Downs to her resume. The Modesty served as the local prep for the Beverly D. when both races were run in Chicago. No distaffer has captured both races. Victor Cheminaud has the mount and the pair will leave the gate from post 5.

Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown has won the Beverly D. six times over his career and will send out a pair of Peter Brant-owned runners in search of lucky number seven.  Gina Romantica (5-1, post 6) took the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Keeneland last fall to close out her 3-year-old campaign. She made her 4-year-old debut at Monmouth Park last month in the Eatontown finishing fourth, beaten just a length and a quarter. Brown will also saddle graded stakes winner Rocky Sky (6-1) who will start from the outside post 7.  Flavien Prat gets the call aboard the former while Tyler Gaffalione gets a leg up astride the latter.

Eric Jensen's Jan's Girls (Antonio Gallardo, post 2, 12-1), Romagna Mia (John Velazquez, post 3, 4-1), and Qatar Racing LLC and Racehorse Club's Mise En Scene (Jamie Spencer, post 4, 8-1) complete the field.
