United Earns Top Billing In ‘Win And You’re In’ Del Mar Handicap

L N J Foxwoods' United, a big, strapping racehorse who can run all day on the grass with the best around, will strut his stuff at Del Mar Saturday in the oldest stakes on the shore oval's roster – the Del Mar Handicap.

This is the 81st season of summer racing at Del Mar and this is the 81st running of the Del Mar 'Cap, a race that has been won by dozens of top class horses over the years and might add another to its ranks in the Giant's Causeway gelding United.

The race goes as the 7th on an 11-race program that offers more than $1-million in purses. It carries a $200,000 incentive, Grade II status and further encouragement because it is part of the “Win and You're In” program that grants its winner a guaranteed entry with fees paid in the $4 million Breeders' Cup Turf, the foremost event for grass runners nationally that will be contested this year on November 7 at Keeneland in Lexington, KY as part of the two-day Breeders' Cup championships.

Notably, United ran in that race last year when it was held at Santa Anita and lost a furious battle to Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar by a head. Trainer Richard Mandella circled this year's running of the Turf on his calendar and has been pointing his charge toward it again.

United will face 10 foes Saturday and they'll travel a mile and three eighths on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

United, who has banked $1,253,549 during a career that has seen him win six of 14 starts including a three-for-three run in stakes this year, scored most recently in the Grade II Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar on July 26. The chestnut's connections behind L N J Foxwoods are Larry and Nancy Roth and their daughter, Jaime, from Great Neck, NY.

It appears that Originaire and Oscar Dominguez – a pair of Irish-bred runners – are the chief threats to United.

Originaire, a 4-year-old by Zoffany, has chased United home in his last two starts, the Eddie Read and then the Whittingham at Santa Anita prior to that. The bay colt has finished in the top three in 12 of his 18 starts and is trained by veteran Jeff Mullins.

Oscar Dominguez won Del Mar's Hollywood Turf Cup at a mile and one-half here last fall. He has six wins, six seconds and six thirds and earnings of $464,214 to his credit. He's a 7-year-old gelding, also by Zoffany, and runs out of the Richard Baltas barn.

Combatant registered a big win earlier in the year when he was a photo-finish victor in the Santa Anita Handicap. The 5-year-old by the late sire Scat Daddy has just over $1-million in winnings. His trainer is John Sadler.

‘She Is Back In Top Order’: Enable Cruises To Third King George VI & Queen Elilzabeth Victory

Under rainy skies, Prince Khalid Abdullah's 6-year-old mare Enable (GB), ridden by Frankie Dettori, overpowered Sovereign (IRE) and Japan (GB) en route to a record third win in Saturday's 1 ½-mile King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes (G1) at Ascot in the United Kingdom. The 5 ½-length victory earned Enable a guaranteed starting position into the $6 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) through the international Breeders' Cup Challenge.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge is an international series of stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on Nov. 6-7.

Enable becomes the fourth horse this year to gain a “Win and You're In” berth for the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf. She joins Nao Da Mais (BRZ), who won the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1) in Argentina, Lord North (IRE), who captured the Prince of Wales's Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot and Chrono Genesis (JPN), who took the Takarazuka Kinen (G1) in Japan.

Enable, the 2018 Longines Breeders' Cup Turf winner and a two-time champion of the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), trained by John Gosden, improved her record to 14 wins in 17 starts. She captured the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2017 and in 2019.

Dettori also tied Lester Piggott with a record seven wins in the King George VI.

Making her second start of the year since her defeat to Ghaiyyath (IRE) in the Coral-Eclipse (G1) at Sandown on July 5, Enable faced just two Aidan O'Brien-trained rivals in Japan, last year's Juddmonte International (G1) winner, and Sovereign, the 2019 Irish Derby (G1) winner. A third Ballydoyle runner, 2019 Investec Derby (G1) winner Anthony Van Dyck (IRE), was scratched earlier Saturday morning.

Sent off as the 4-9 favorite, Enable raced in second behind Sovereign, who extended to a six-length in the early going. On the turn for home, Dettori began to urge Enable. Closing the gap into the final furlong, Dettori peered over his left shoulder at Japan, who was not responding to encouragement from jockey Ryan Moore. The daughter of Nathaniel then swept past Sovereign to a commanding victory.

“Enable has really, really trained beautifully for this race,” said Gosden. “I made it very clear to everyone that she wasn't tuned properly for a mile and a quarter [in the Eclipse] at that pace, but the race put her right. I told Frankie to ride her with a lot of confidence and travel for a long as he could, and she did.

“She is back in top order, no doubt about that. We have been thrilled with her at home. I never expect things like that but I was expecting to see that, but life can be full of disappointments.”

“Obviously, we knew Sovereign was going to make the running and it was a bit of a cat and mouse situation with me and Ryan for the first couple of furlongs,” said Dettori. “He was happy to let me go, so I followed the pacemaker and, in fairness, it was a very even gallop. I was trying to time it so I did not hit the front too early and I couldn't hear a lot, so I looked around and I saw Ryan in trouble. Then it was a matter of hoping that, if I pressed the button, she would pick up and she did.”

In winning her 11th Group 1 race, Enable covered the 1 ½ miles in 2:28.92 over a course listed as good to firm.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for Enable to start in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf, which will be run at 1 ½ miles over the Keeneland turf course. Breeders' Cup also will provide a travel allowance of US$40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Winner Magician Relocated To Italy

Magician, the winner of the 2013 Breeders' Cup Turf and Irish 2,000 Guineas, has been relocated once again, this time to stand in Italy, according to the French racing publication Jour de Galop.

A farm and fee will be determined later for the 10-year-old son of Galileo, whose career will be managed by the partnership of Mattia Cadrobbi, Marco Bozzi and Guido Berardelli.

Magician began his stallion career in 2015 at Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., and he was relocated to Coolmore's Castlehyde Stud in Ireland prior to the completion of the 2018 breeding season. He was then moved to Haras de Corlay in France in 2019, where he stood for two seasons.

The stallion's oldest foals are 4-year-olds of 2020, led by Chilean Group 1-placed Calmate, English Group 2-placed Cardini, and stakes winner Miss My Rose.

Magician won four of 15 starts during his racing career for earnings of $2,580,402. His strongest campaign came at age three, in which he won the English G3 Dee Stakes as a prep for a score in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He finished his sophomore campaign with a half-length triumph in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita Park.

At four, Magician picked up a win in the Irish G3 Mooresbridge Stakes, and finished second in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, Prince of Wales's Stakes, and Arlington Million.

Magician is out of the Group 3-placed stakes-winning Mozart mare Absolutelyfabulous, making him a full-brother to Grade 3 winner Apple Betty and Grade 1-placed stakes winner Outstanding.

Multiple European classic winner Henrythenavigator is in his extended family, along with Irish champion Listen, Group 1 winner Sequoyah, and Group 3 winner Queen Cleopatra.

Enable Showed ‘Zest And Desire’ In Sunday’s Coral-Eclipse Defeat By Ghaiyyath

Champion racemare Enable, kept in training for 2020 to seek a third victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, began her 6-year-old season with a strong second in Sunday's Group 1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. The John Gosden-trained Juddmonte mare was defeated 2 1/4 lengths by frontrunner Ghaiyyath, but fended off challenges from Japan, Magic Wand, and Deirdre.

“We're delighted with that, she ran a gorgeous race,” Gosden told racingpost.com. “We know about Ghaiyyath and Sandown is a great front-runner's track. We're very happy. She enjoyed it and the zest and desire was there, but trying to get involved with a front-running horse like him was never going to be her deal.”

Gosden said Enable was only 85 percent fit for Sunday's race, and jockey Frankie Dettori confirmed that the mare was a bit tired in the final 100 yards.

Up next, plans call for Enable to try for a record-setting three-peat in the King George at Ascot on July 25. The mare's major year-end target is a historic third win in the Arc, a goal she fell just short of last year when Waldgeist ran her down over the very soft ground at York.

Enable won the Arc in 2017 and 2018, and became the first horse in history to win the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Turf in the same season when she crossed the wire first at Churchill Downs in November 2018.
